I gave myself a few simple rules when choosing my name (Tara). 1-It should be easy to say and spell 2-I don't want to share a name with someone I personally know, or any major celebrities 3-Ideally would be common to my age group Picking middle and last names was more difficult so I got some help from loved ones for those, but I'm really happy with the name I settled on!

I have a funny story about my name. I chose the name Evelyn, simply because I thought it sounded nice. but then when I came out, I learned that Evelyn actually would've been my middle name if I had been born a girl. So just by choosing a name that sounded nice, I had picked out one of the names my parents had chosen for me by complete coincidence! I then also chose to make my middle name what my first name would've been, so I technically have the names my parents picked for me - just in reverse order!

A problem I came across choosing a name was that, as someone who plays a lot of D&D, friends often chose names I liked for their characters, so I thought it could be weird to choose one of those names. I decided to go with Gwen anyway, though, and it worked out fine. But it does cause some strange situations where I sometimes think someone’s talking about me, and they’re actually talking about my friend’s character.

Ahh the wonderful process of choosing your name. Not many people in life have this privilege. For me, I chose my name 35 years ago, I wanted my 3 initials to spell a certain word to remind those I worked with who I now was, initials being used all the time in work. My initials are HER and I chose my names to fit them. Never regretted the names I have. More things to remember! 1. Choose how many syllables you’re comfortable using for yourself on a daily basis. I personally was only comfortable with one or two. 2. Don’t think about how gendered your new name is or how popular or generic, but what qualities or emotions your name conveys instead. (I chose an ancient name of a great and powerful woman because I felt that a delicate name didn’t fit my personality. The name of a warrior queen did.) 3. Remember that you don’t have to love love love your name. Cis people don’t!Remember your name is just a serial number to be called at the DMV, during sex, or during a breakup. You will not always feel euphoria when your name is called. It will be lovely, heartbreaking, bureaucratic, fun, and above all, neutral. 4. Use your name in private and temporary instances for a while. It’s tempting to try out new names with friends and family, but it can be a headache if you have to start over. 5. Do not seek a name desperately. Allow yourself time to stumble across the multiple names that really resonate with you. The ones that ring in your ears day and night because you find them beautiful. Try it on for a week privately, and then put it in your back pocket. The only name that won’t get stale for you is the name you can’t bring yourself to discard as an option. I’ll say it again. THE ONLY NAME THAT WON’T GET STALE IS THE NAME YOU’RE UNCOMFORTABLE DISCARDING AS AN OPTION. Hope this helps. :3

when i first realized that i'm non-binary (specifically a demiboy, but i didn't realize at the time), i was so excited to change my name. i've always hated my deadname with a burning passion. thing is, i didn't know what to call myself! i went through a few websites, but nothing stuck out at me. i only ever considered 3 names. i thought of neo, because i had just watched the matrix at the time, but i knew that name wouldn't stick, so i moved on. i don't even remember the second name. i thought of it because it looked cool, but i couldn't pronounce it for the life of me, so i had to scrap it. here's how i found my new name (which i will not be sharing with strangers on the internet). i found a name with a meaning that i felt described me. i wasn't even thinking of the meanings of names when i first started, but it helped me, someone who had no idea what i was looking for, finally decide. hopefully this story isn't too personal to share online...

Commenting from my old account because I can't change it for now (family), but I ended up choosing Rosalie after looking for a name for a good couple of months. I'm obsessed with choosing "correct" things as if there was only one correct answer, but I liked the name "Rosalina" (yes her) and wanted to make her name my middle name, but since I'm French I changed it slightly to fit. After looking for the "correct" name for a while, and friends starting to call me by what I thought would be my middle name, I realized it wasn't too bad after all, and decided to go with it. Pros: it keeps the first letter intact, which I like because R is a cool letter and my mom has it tattooed, you can shorten it many ways (rosa, rose, rosie..) and it's not too common either but still exists. Cons: literally inspired by the super mario series, but thankfully in French, Rosalina is named Harmonie, so most won't know. My old name is Rémy, which I think is pretty, but I've been almost bullied over it because of the show. I learned while searching for a new name that my old name and its -i variant are actually given to girls in the USA, despite being a strictly masc. name in France. odd stuff! Middle name will be Sophia because a close friend had suggested it and I like it. Anyway thanks for reading.

So right after I came out, before I had really thought about what my chosen name would be, I went to Torrid (a clothing store for plus sized women) to get my first feminine clothing. So apparently there they write your name on the dressing room door in chalk, and so when the clerk was showing me to a dressing room to try on the clothes I had picked out she asked my name. I panicked and blurted out the name that my Mom told me would have been my name if I had been born female, Heidi. I didn't like the name because the book Heidi had become real popular again in the late 70s when I was a kid and I knew if I had been named that I would have been teased a lot. When I got home and told my (now deceased) wife, she said, "Oh god, I hope you don't get stuck with THAT name!" I started listing ideas, then I posted on Facebook asking my friends for advice on choosing a name. One of them suggested Nura, after a character in a comic book both of us were a fan of, and I pretty much decided right then and there that was my name.

So my new name is Kim, which came from 3 things: 1. Kim Possible, she truly was my idol and (unknowingly back then) inspiration 2. A girl who I knew from Prep-Year 2 who was also Kim, and she potentially knew who I was the most out of anyone I knew back then, at the very least she knew I loved trains and got me a train book and sent me a train postcard while she was in the UK on holiday 3. I figured it'd be neat if I could make my new name out of bits/sounds from my old name, and it kinda matches the shortened form of my old name I literally jumped straight to Kim with zero consideration for any other name, and for good reason 💚💚💚💚💚 also IS THAT WINDOWS XP???

Story time with strangers: okay so I realized that I can’t really change my name because I’ll dead name myself. And even though my name is gender neutral, I felt it was a little too masc. So, I will go from Jude, to Judith. And then still go by Jude because that’s what I’m used to. But if people want to call me Judith, that’s cool to me

So I have a weird story about me being trans. I first figured it out 8-9 years ago, but didn't know the words and in the end didn't continue. My parents knew in their hearts I would be AMAB, so only chose my old name. So I started a diary with my own chosen name (Elise) with a second name. Now I finally figured that I am actually Trans, and Elise remained my name since. I didn't like my chosen second name, and still struggling to find a nice one. I do want one at some point, but the ones I think od don't work well with my first one 😅

I'm still not sure which name i'll go by, but there is a name that hits me differently the more i think about it: Amanda. I love how it sounds, and a plus: i don't know anyone with this name irl! That was a big concern of mine, too. A few days ago, i suddenly imagined my friends calling me by that name, and I felt very euphoric. The chills! I thought about using the name my mom would give me if I was afab, but it IS the name of an old friend of mine from high school. I have still contact with a friend of ours in common, so I really feel weird to use it. And i dunno, i don't feel very connected to it. The same goes for the opposite version of my amab name. Doesn't click at all.

rn i have teo possible names for myself, the first one is Soviêta, that has absolutely no ties to my political ideology at all (me when im lying) but this one is supossed to be more unique and meaningfull, due to some lesser paralels that i have in between my life and the history of the ussr (nothing too significant tho, i definely won't get even near the same results as that country) if i eventualy end up with the other name or another alltogether this is CERTAINLY gonna end up as a GamerTag, the other one im thinking of is Daniela, a more common name in brasil and the first two silables are very close to my deadname, making it easy for my brain to re-adjust to the name and make the conection (this also just so happens to be very close to the name of my aunt)

I never really planned my new name, it sort of just happened. When I first discovered that I was trans, I joined a few websites and discords to find more, but wanted to go by female name to hide my identity, so I just picked a name from a book. Years later when I started coming out to people, the first people who I came out to were some member of the one discord server who knew me irl, and when they asked me what name I wanted, it seemed natural to continue to use the same first name that they had been using for me for years, and keep my own last name. Then in February this year, I legally change my name.

I made it simple by looking at name suggestions that fit my country, and picked a name that has the same first two letters as my deadname. It’s similar enough for people to make the connection, but different enough that it won’t be mistaken for my old name. Aside from similarity, the one of the factors I wanted my new name to address was something that sounds good in any language, because my deadname only sounds good in nordic languages. New name is good not only in my mother tongue, but also english and Japanese. The only other concern I had was picking something that isn’t already taken by anyone else I know, and my new name is surprisingly uncommon where I live in

That being said, here is my current list of relatively androgynous names i’m thinking of. Acre, Ashton, Azaria Beacon, Briar Cleo, Cinder Echo, Ellis, Eris, Evren, Ember Fable Igneous, Ira Koda Lex, Levy, Lock, Lucky Meridian Naught, Night(spelling?) Payton Ray Salem, Sel Thorn/Thorne? Wren Zorah Thorne & Cinder are my current faves.

I do really appreciate the videos and advice, you actually gave me an idea I hadn't thought of...and then made me realize that being an immigrant with a gendered surname, I'd have to adjust and change that as well. That said, you may really, really want to script the videos so they turn out better paced and less feeling stop-start as well as...well...the little giggles are adorable, but the constant pausing to breathe into the mic and giggle makes the delivery less effective. I'm not saying you have to be robotic or a professional orator or anything, but just perhaps a little more of a balance.

I ended up making a shortlist by looking at popular names related to my cultural background. Then I choose a few that felt cute and reflective of myself if someone called me by those names. Half the shortlist was names I knew from like videogames and comics. Ended up choosing one on the day of my first appointment sharing with my doctor I am trans and want to go by Talia.

Hoo boy, names. Tough choice indeed. Me, who's NB and maybe trans???, had a pretty hard time deciding on one. I basically just looked at gender neutral names and picked out some that sounded cool. But gradually, I just shifted to more and more female names. I think I found my preferred one by now though. And to anyone who's still searching, don't worry, take your time. It'll come to you eventually. Best of luck on your further journey, still.

I couldn't care less if it's a common.. stereotype'ish name for MtF. Still not settled on it yet, but the first name I thought of and most likely option for me is Ember. I feel like choosing a new username (and applying it retroactively across accounts) will be much harder though. It's not really something most people need to do but well... I picked my username like, 9 years ago because "dude" has always been my nickname in my family and so I just thought the username sounded nice.

took me 3 seconds, "hmm I feel like I need a name... Opal" and it's stuck for the last 3 or so years without any doubt that it's perfect, but I've always been good at choosing fantasy names. I have a certain strategy that's very useful, take the core concept of the character in one word, find an obscure synonym, take the letter that stands out the most in the word (usually first) then start adding syllables one at a time till it sticks, my absolute favourite is an old character Aurius that I had, she doesn't have arms so the A was for arms, that led to aur as in aurora as the first name that came to mind with A, then cut it half way, and just said syllables till it sounded right. also 3 syllable names are perfect for fantasy sounding names, longer if more fancy shorter if less fancy, just go with the flow of saying random educated guesses till it feels finished
