For the clothes, the best option I found was thrift stores. Not only will you usually have a much wider variety of options, but you also won't have to have awkward conversations with staff. Beyond that, new clothes are expensive. At the thrift store you can get clothes for a few dollars that otherwise you'd be spending a fortune for... And if they don't fit or they aren't really to your liking, you aren't out all that much.

I'm in a position where I can comfortably practice transition at any pace, but my job is very exposed to the public, and the general community is awful. I appreciate these discreet tips. I shaved my arms once and it felt nice, but I felt self conscious about them when walking out in short sleeves. it felt nice not having hair there, honestly, and I'm def going to make the most out of shaving this autumn/winter. Been meaning to give my legs a shave. That's next on my list of things to do.

If you haven't yet, do it. Smooth legs sliding through clean sheets like glass is a joy like no other. It feels AMAZING. Just prepare to pretend you're a swimmer if you're planning on wearing shorts, and brace for that excuse not working. Why it doesn't, idk, but own that shit. Athletes are stereotypically confident, after all.

Best advice for growing hair: Just be a metal head UwU Edit: That applies to colored nails and maybe colored hair as well, depending on how accepting people are around you. Your presentation can be part of a sub culture or just a style you like. Not everything necessarily has to be gendered. Like, there are cis men who color their nails, shave their body, color their hair, ... just because they like it (many bodybuilders shave, men of subcultures like punk or goth sometimes color nails and hair, ...). As a transgirl, I think this could be a good argumentation to slightly transition while still staying closeted. I will certainly do it this way + use Lucy's sneaky ideas on top :3

Some other things I'd like to add about hiding a transition, if on HRT it's probably a really good idea to either see your family (or anybody you want to stealth around) either often, or not at all. Like if someone saw you only every 3 months or something, they're going to more easily notice the changes to your body because it won't be gradual for them, whereas it would be if it were daily. Though you should also avoid any situation where being with them might involve them taking pictures (like going to the beach, holidays, other social events) because that picture now serves as a reference they could use to more easily notice. And you should also avoid letting them touch you since HRT will definitely make your skin feel smoother. Edit on that part: Also worth keeping in mind that if any children notice changes from your transition, there's a decent chance they'll say something about it whether they/their parents are accepting or not. Kids don't really have inhibitions and often say what's on their mind. So if you had extended family with kids, even if they're accepting, the kids may expose you if they pointed anything out. Hasn't happened to me but worth considering. For getting HRT in stealth (or as much as possible), at least if you're in the U.S and an adult there's Planned Parenthood and informed consent, which means they provide information and allow you to make the call as an adult capable of their own decisions. You can basically just make a digital appointment (even if people live with you, that digital meeting might not be too bad, though best to schedule during time safe and alone) and maybe even pick up a prescription the same day like I did. It's also good to ask about financial assistance and stuff if you need that. Estrogen is luckily pretty easy to get actually, or at least easier than testosterone since that's a controlled substance. And for hiding HRT prescription itself, if you take them as pills then you could keep like a week's worth at a time in a pill organizer. Some people might not already be taking any medication, BUT you could pretty easily justify it by also getting some supplements, like vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, zinc, magnesium, omega 3, B vitamins, etc. although hiding the actual bottles for the HRT may still be something to consider. Lastly this might not be an option for everyone, but if you're into cosplay or some fandoms like Star Wars/Harry Potter, you could replace the simple dysphoria hoodie with full body outfits like a black robe, which would hide a ton. Tell people you're just being a Sith lord or wizard. If they know you to be nerds for those things, it probably won't raise too much suspicion. Edit to add: Also a REALLY good way to voice train in stealth would be signing up for a choir, if anyone has the option. I took choir for like 2-3 years when I was in school and I feel it helped tremendously, even with what little voice training I did. Choir will not be specifically for getting a feminine voice of course, but you will learn a lot about how to control things like pitch, resonance, etc. a lot of techniques you learn in voice training will be taught in a choir class. It's not unusual for anyone of any gender to take choir classes, and if your family thinks it's feminine there may even be a choir in your church (if you have to attend one). I would say the only downsides to a choir class are that you'll probably have to lean into your deep voice, even though you expand your range, if you are a bass then they'll want you singing bass. And of course, you need to be able to afford it. If your education is being paid for by your parents, it's a great time to get credits for graduation while picking up a skill useful in transition. Choir is also just awesome for learning to project your voice, you will find it easier to speak with authority and rizz as the kids might say.

Another great tip for those who wish to keep their alter-ego lifestyle private, is to get a private storage unit near your home, where you can keep all of your feminine attire, books, magazines, etc. I did that for many years before I came out! I kept a card table and comfy wheeled desk chair in there. I had a makeup mirror w/light, and full length mirror. I placed remnant carpeting on the floor. I would always go there to get 'dolled up' before trans support group meetings (which I had founded), and other outings with friends, and then go there to 'undo' afterward! Keep a jug of water and paper towels in there (they help, trust me)! I screwed an electrical adapter into the light socket, and screwed the light bulb into the adapter, which gave me non-grounded power for a small fan, and a small radio, etc. But be careful on the power usage, as those sockets aren't rated for much power (maybe 100 watts). You'll also want to keep your clothes, shoes, wigs, etc. sealed up while inside there, as they would get nasty if they're left out. Also, make sure your storage unit is accessible 24/7, otherwise you may be in for a rude surprise after a night out! 😧😧🏳‍⚧

If the 'friend whose body is similar to yours' is in the hospital and/or its their birthday soon, that gives a reason why it is so urgent and why they can't do it themself, but why despite being nervous, you insist on doing it, and the nervousness will be read as embarrasment by onlookers.

When I was thinking about how to start transitioning, I could not decide how I would tell anyone close to me. I'm more afraid of their reactions than embarrassed of myself. My decision was to keep it secret. Only a couple close trusted friends and one very supportive family member knows what I am doing. While I can't say much about the social aspect of transition, I have been on HRT for almost a year. I feel so much better about myself. That may not work for everyone but, for me, it has been lifesaving. At some point, the people in my life will take notice. When they do, it may not go well. I can imagine their feelings being hurt. Nobody likes to feel left out. Maybe they will feel that I didn't trust them enough but, it's not about them. I'm not doing this for anyone but me. If they would have been supportive before, then they will be when they find out. Nobody else's opinion matters to me. Be confident in yourself and good people will take notice.

For shaving body hair I'd recommend a double edge razor like Henson. They're usually marketed as unisex, replacement razors are way cheaper and its a lot easier to avoid cutting yourself (you can still cut yourself if you're not careful but you don't have to worry as much about it). I use a Henson razor to shave my body and facial hair and I can get a really close shave relatively easily/quickly.

I have to say...luckily I don't need to do it secretly, but clothes shopping alone made me very nervous, especially because in literally 6 stores there wasn't even one skirt 😅 But...speaking of skirts...if you can't buy one, but you have an old shirt, you can make a skirt yourself! You need to check if the shirt fits around your waist when it's upside-down, then cut either before the holes for the arms or below them to create an opening to step comfortably into. Then just put it on like it's a skirt... if it's too loose, then try to tie a knot with the fabric, which is too much for you. It won't look perfectly, but it will do its job ^^

Another tip: buy things that look like mens clothes but are actually womens. That way you can wear those clothes 24/7 without anyone noticing. Sure it's not skirt go spinny territory yet but you don't have to be that sneaky all the time. The skirts and dresses can come later when you're in a safer space.

Literally everything I wear aside from the graphic tees is female clothing, socks, jeans shoes, and underwear. Graphic tees to me the ones I like are not available in female so to me they are generic even though technically male so that does not matter. My family has never noticed. I am completely closeted and only my wife and my sister know the truth. The kids are 17 and 18 and have no idea that dad is trans and cross dressing full time pretty much. I would love to be fully out and wear what I want but I worry about how the kids and my Mother in-law that lives with us will react.

The "do makeup right before showering" tip is BRILLIANT! A tip I can provide: people may (and eventually will) notice you shave your legs, but barely anyone will notice you do so with arms. And even if they do (which ever happened to me ONCE throughout all the years), you can simply say your arm hair is genetically very short, and they're gonna eat it up.

Finally started HRT this year at 26 but I knew I was trans and wanting by 11 so I had many years of being sneaky. I always thought about passing on my tricks, excuses, and stories so I love that you are making this kind of video. My favorite thing is manufacturing a socially acceptable way to dress up. One such time was when I was in 6th grade I was part of a dance trapeze class (school below dance studio). The theme was night circus so I started saving up my lunch money for a whole month so I could buy sometime, I had to walk downtown but I found a shop selling a black and red tutu I bought "for a friend who was sick". Come the night of the performance I realized it was obviously an audience of school parents but thankfully I had the iron clad excuse of we needed to match/they made me. With that ready I could use hairclips in my " longer Justin Bieber hair" and some eyeliner and go on stage and perform. Best of all was after me and the girls got to run around downtown at night dressed up. With the protection of not wanting to embarrass me other parents never brought it up and my parents never knew.

Lovely video, thank you for spreading these tips. But as a cashier who works in an international clothing store, let me tell you, we don't care. I'll repeat that for the people in the back of the closet, WE DON'T CARE! As long as you buy clothes in those supermarket clothing chains, (think primark, h&m or similar) nobody gives a damn about what you buy. We are more concerned about our lunch break than we are about what you have in your shopping bag.

I failed at the very first hurdle, and that was before I even started questioning my gender. At the time, I had a buzz cut and I told my parents that I wanted to try growing out my hair to shoulder length, just to see what it was like. THAT WAS THE ONLY REASON. Nevertheless, parents asked my CBT therapist to tell me to talk to by psychotherapist about why I wanted to grow out my hair. About 6-8 months later, still growing out my hair, I began questioning my gender (kind of).

Also, if you pay for clothing items using CASH, you can buy them, then find a restroom to try them on, and then return them to the store right away, if need be (otherwise, using a debit or credit card will require a day or two before you can return items). I always purchase a few different sizes closest to my own size, that way, I can get just the right fit, and return the rest. I will also then buy extras of the items that fit, such as blouses, skirts, etc., because I know I will need them for MANY years to come! I have bought THOUSANDS of skirts and blouses in public places over the years, and NOBODY has ever given me a hard time (even when they KNEW why I was buying them)! It's FUN!!

I want to be a feminine and joyful girl..... but just based on my character, I'm as depressive and silent as possible, who cares more about the inner world than the outer manifestation. I try to make the transition, but because of the depression I get tired quickly and I immediately feel like I'm putting on a show for others. But without that performance... because of my personality and lifestyle, I'm not much different from the rest of the guys. Just if I was a girl from the beginning... there would be zero questions for me, but I'm not stupid... I understand how I look and how I sound. It's all weird, and I don't even know how to put it all together and present it to you as a comment. Maybe other trans girls have similar feelings? Thanks for what you do, your voice videos have helped me...really I've given up on the whole thing. Maybe someday I'll find the motivation and reason to get back into it.

The whole "fake it till you make it" mindset does really help for me with stuff like that, even if acting completely different than how I typically present to others feels unnatural, and part of my brain tells me I'm just putting on a performance, it just feels so much nicer to act that way and that makes me able to set aside those thoughts
@Nikowo1610

And I know that as long as I keep on acting like that, it will slowly but surely become more and more natural to me, and eventually it's pretty much my base personality

I advise for clothes, if you are for example too young to do any of this, or too scared, big hoodies are your bestie, primarily in cold regions. If they're oversized and baggy, I know I do prefer tight fitting clothes physically, but mentally, it feels like a dress. It's long, it's big, it's cute, and won't call for much suspicion.

After all of my deprogramming it’s so weird to me how parents will essentially lock down their child from the outside world, give them zero life’s experiences, then when they go out into the real world the parents act shocked and like their child has been “corrupted” by the forces of the world…. Like, no ma’am, those are ripped jeans, they come like that from the store.

10:30 my hair growing out story is crazy. I went to a private Christian school. Uniforms, chapel, the nine yards. They also had a clause that boys hair could not be longer than 3”, and they measured it. I always fought this, protesting hair cuts, “I don’t care if I get expelled,” dying my hair so my parents were forced to let it grow before chopping it, etc. My senior year my school began illegally recruiting high schoolers for its dwindling football team and they bought this Jamaican kid who had dreadlocks. I GOT CALLED RACIST FOR SAYING HE SHOULD BE MADE TO CUT HIS HAIR, multiple times, from my friends who agreed that the rule was bullshit. Did it have something to do with being in “The Buckle of the Bible Belt,” and this being the… 3rd black guy they’ve ever known on a 1:1 basis…? After this it became apparent that the hair rules were simply in place to fulfill the sick fantasies of the losers who ran the place, girls had a minimum hair length…. MINIMUM. I started growing out my hair that school year and went an entire year without cutting it, and since then I’ve been going 6-14 months between cuts to grow it out over time and I’ve gotta say, my hair looks damn fine. Also my school got suspended for two seasons for violating recruiting laws, which is very funny to me.
