my girlfriend plays the flute, alto flute, piano etc, even ukulele and guitar (+bass) but she plays her flute/alto in school, and they always play Fairytale of New York during their concerts (especially xmas). And I always cry at that one iconic part where the whole band and choir comes joines, my heart just MELTS watching her play and have so much fun :") she encouraged me to pick up the recorder, cause i've always wanted to be in band/do music but my mom never allowed me, and i kinda got jealous at her 11 years of expertise. she played duets with me and taught me and helped me with fingering:") and we found this channel!! thank you for helping me so much!

Happy, happy New Year...number five is it. Well I love team recorder and I get a lot of it and I don't even play the recorder, much...I do enjoy and learn from your many lessons regarding musicianship. I play the tuba. Thank you, thank you.

Thanks, Sarah! This is very fun to play. I play it on my alto by playing the lowest passages an octave higher. Playing in unison with you is good practice for my intonation.

ONE OF MY STUDENTS’ mums bought me a keyboard for christmas :D. So so happy. I stopped playing piano for some years as I move around every few years and haven’t settled anywhere (Stress, travel or money problems) so I didn’t buy a new keyboard when I moved to Milan and did other things. I got back into archery again after a few years without access to a range. Funny that the second I buy and start on the recorder I get a free keyboard. You have given me a love for the recorder that I never had before. I thought the piano was my only love and never really liked the flute family really. Probably because I am into metal so the recorder never really crossed my mind apart from being the cheapest and most portable instrument. So I am going to push through the beginner argh my ears months and keep going with it. Tomorrow I am picking up a new pearwood soprano which should be nicer than the €10 plastic one I bought a week or so ago. Also on the first one the foot joint won’t budge so I can’t play low c. On this new one that should be in the correct position. Eventually I want to buy a real piano and move to a quality wooden tenor recorder but for now I am pretty excited!

I was at a musical Christmas party last night and had the opportunity to sing/play ‘Fairytale of New York’. The person I was singing with wanted me to keep the original lyric, and said, “you won’t sing the f-word, huh?” ... I noticed that although they thought it was a good idea that *I* sing the original lyric, *they* wouldn’t say it out loud, either. “Jackets” it is. The change got delighted laughter from a few who knew the song, and henceforth, these will be my go-to words when singing this song.

And I also just wanted to say, on the off chance that you’re seeing this - thank you for fixing the words 💜 it’s amazing to feel so accepted and defended by (my favorite) classical performer? Like that you won’t stand for casual homophobia in the industry? Ddgsgdfsgdf sorry I’m not very articulate - I just. I’ve always loved your channel and now I know I’m safe here and love it even more? 💜💜

Clarianet To be fair though, back when it was recorded, the word held a lot less weight. I completely understand when someone doesn’t like hearing it but to change the words of a song is like removing the statue of a David’s genitals just because they might make someone uncomfortable.
@Team_Recorder5 жыл бұрын
@@Jacob-eq4ld Hi Jacob, I'm not sure if the word held less weight back then, more that the feelings and safety of LGBTQ+ people were not seen as worthy of respect. There's nothing wrong with changing words in a song and letting it evolve over time - this happens all the time in folk music too 😊
@christopherstorz61844 жыл бұрын
While in general your statement about casual homophobia is true, it misses the mark here. To change this lyric strips the verse of its meaning and intent. There was nothing "casual" about this word choice (Shane spent 3 years fine tuning the lyrics to this song), but you don't need any history of the writing process to see this, it is evident in the structure of the song. The lyrics alternate the "fairytale" of New York with the "reality" of New York. The fairytale is in the previous verse, with the "Queen of New York" line. A fairytale of a city where everyone was accepted for who they were and to be different was ok. The verse with the contentious lyric reflects the reality (of the period). A city where it was most certainly not safe to be different. The implication here, by the surrounding lyrics is that this verse is being sung by the NYPD choir and anyone who was gay in New York during the period sung about can tell you exactly how accepting and welcoming New York's Finest were to anyone who was different (their favorite greeting was to hit you over the head with a night stick). As always, wonderful vid, @Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder

Did you also change the line "You're an old slut on junk"? Or are you only concerned about one section of the community being offended? 😁They sang the full song with all the original lyrics from the church altar at Shane MacGowan's funeral last week.
