You can hear that guys like Mike Patton and Devin Townsend have actual good vocal technique when listening to their clean and harsh vocals. Even a guy like Serj Tankian fucked up his vocals way more than those guys - you can hear he is clearly talented but doesn't always use proper technique. Same with Brent Hinds from Mastodon, but he's a little more inconsistent, I think it may be moreso to do with substance intake lol.

However smokin DOES also tend to make your voice deeper too so can be beneficial to bass and baritone clean vocals in that way (not promoting smokin tobacco just speakin from my own experience lol)
