Faith No More is from San Francisco. I actually saw Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers together in a club here in St. Louis back in 1987. Neither band had made it big at that point .My cover band plays Epic as a regular part of our show and it always goes over great. BTW- the reason the song is called Epic is because of that's how Mike Patton describes the sound of the keyboards,the word epic doesn't appear in the song.

Mike Patton is easily one of the most talented musicians and singers around. His vocal range is unbelievable, he experiments with loads of vocal styles (Mondo Cane album, Mr Bungle, Left 4 Dead zombies) and it took him just two weeks to write all the lyrics for the album The Real Thing after he joined Faith No More in 1988. Their song The Real Thing is mind-blowing when you listen to the lyrics. How someone that was just 20 years old came up with something so deep is beyond me! Definitely give that a reaction sometime. You won’t regret it!

OMG, can't imagine hearing this song without thinking of the video! It was so huge on MTV in the early 90's, and made a big impression on me as a 9yr old kid. Not to mention all the controversy about the fish, lol. Btw, I don't think the fish died, it just flopped around for a while and they put it back in the water. Also, it's supposed to look cartoonish and goofy, (including the clothes) not realistic, lol. It would only be "cringy" if they didn't do it that way on purpose.

Faith no More is a turning point in music. Without Mike Patton metal and a lot of other genres would not be where they are. Almost all of the greats in music praise Mike Patton. I love FNM. P.S. This video definitely makes me feel old, with you introducing this to your daughter. I used to listen to this at a local pool hall when I was like 12 back in the early 90's.

Trivia: the goo/slime used in this video and "Falling to Pieces" was dental gel that becomes rock hard. The fish at the end belonged to Björk and was a gift to the band's keyboardist Roddy. When FNM got blasted in media for animal abuse against the fish Roddy and Billy (bass player) said in an interview that being out of water "probably gave the fish some character it didn't have before" - it lived a long fishy life after the making of the video btw

Also I remember being around 5 or 6 years old and seeing this band play this song on Arsenio Hall late at night. Mike Patton legit beat up a mannequin dressed like Adolf Hitler on stage and I knew I would remember that for the rest of my life. 30 years later, I remember it.

Mike now is part owner of Ipecac Recordings, sings in multiple languages for many many projects spanning every genre from hip hop and avant garde jazz to Italian opera and throat singing, has one of the largest vocal ranges in recorded history and will be on tour for a few shows with Mr. Bungle again next year.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 5 жыл бұрын
Courtney Love was auditioned to be their lead singer before they hired Mike, Mike is dressed in baggy clothes and using the nasal voice to make fun of Chuck Mosely (the singer he replaced) and the album was written when Mike was hired - he wrote the lyrics basically on the spot and went straight on tour. This songs lyrics are loosely about Roddy, who was addicted to drugs after some personal family issues and acting like a diva.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 5 жыл бұрын
The album that follows this (Angel Dust) has much more input from Mike - a very dark, very "soundtrack" feeling album. FNM is from Bay Area (SF/Eureka)
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 5 жыл бұрын
Also, Anthony of RHCP had Mike's band Mr. Bungle kicked off of and barred from festivals because he felt that Faith No More was copying his sound. He wasn't able to keep FNM off of tours because of their mainstream popularity - this started a rivalry between the two singers that Mike poked fun at all through the 90's and early 00's

first off kudos on the gorgeous peach-skin-cheeks babe, beautiful face. Down to business, this is one of the songs that will never get old, everytime I listen to it, I turn it up and and you picked up an excellent example of how a song from the 90's can sound as if it was from this time and if it came out as a new hit on this decade it would be a hit and would do it again, so no matter what time period you're living in, and I bet that years from now it'll still sound so amazing that people there won't believe how old that song is.

Chuck - it's a coincidence that DragonForce's new album is the ad before your video, because I just found out Stevie T is going to be their bassist for the North American leg of their tour. Support in the UK is by Lovebites, the Japanese band I have been trying to get you to react to. And I didn't realise Ellie was your other daughter. I came late to the last video she was in. First of all, as usual a great video, nice reaction, it's the first time I see Ellie (is that correctly written?), congrats for your family, it's awesome that your kids hook up with you in this music trip along history and way far from their original taste. Really great! Now, about this song, it's kind of iconic I think, at that time it was really a little shocker and so refreshing. It was a breakpoint, I guess, when all the 80' stars where at their search for new sounds and songs (Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, U2, Depeche Mode, etc.). On my scale, it's a 100 easy, not that's the best song ever, but it's so classic and memory retrieving....nice. Now......(this is my third time and I won't give up).....please listen to ARCANE - PROMISE (part 2), what a song and surely your taste ..... :-). Malpractice (or anything else really) from Angel Dust. Evidence, Star A.D from King for a Day, Fool for a Lifetime. Mouth to Mouth or Ashes to Ashes from Album of the year. Superhero, Separation Anxiety or Matador from Sol Invictus. Mike Patton is the most versatile vocalist of our generation.

That fish belonged to Scandinavian artist BJORK, and she sued them over it. Somehow her fish ended up in the director's hands (business/ management communities), because she was recording a video at the same place. They stole her fish, and used it in the video (it lived).

I find that her being a fan of hip hop, and claiming it was repetitive, is hilarious, and ironic. She is intelligent, explain the irony to her, or have her read this comment. 😂😂😂

I love the apocalyptic theme at the end. I've never figured out what the lyrics are about. Textually, you aren't supposed to, but I assume there is an intention to say something else, like illustrating the meaninglessness of advertising and commercial pop culture, going along with "the Real Thing" which they mention in another song, which was Coca Cola branding iirc, which begs the question "if it's the real thing, what is It?" That look, with the dayglow shirts and tie-dyes, and the baggy shorts was a very particular moment that began with the Acid House scene and rave culture in the UK, and then blended into the bulky, warm clothes associated with the Seattle Grunge scene. 1989-1991 ish.
