Lego Dimensions is a really fun idea in concept. And for the most part it's executed quite well, but the reliance on toys-to-life really bought this game down a lot, especially in the character-type-specific missions. And it's a real shame too, cause the variety of worlds and characters it had was really cool. Honestly if I was behind this game, I would've made the figure packs optional so people can just buy the worlds and characters digitally using the in-game studs. Also sidenote, while Bubbles' coloring song is a cute reference to the OG series, having it come out of the reboot's actor kinda ruins it for me. It's not a huge deal, but still.

@@rubysu9265 It also helps that they're cross compatible with most games, and not just the one game you bought, so if you already have amiibo and buy a new game, odds are you can probably do _something_ with it, even if it's less than what the official tie in amiibo do.
@329link3 жыл бұрын
Amiibo are probably the best way to do that business practice. The little things they do are small bonuses that don't disrupt the game, usually relating to the character that the figure is based on. So if you buy an amiibo or two based on your favorite character(s), you're pretty much set to get most amiibo exclusive content you care about in any game you'd want. Yes, you as a consumer are looking for a game, but most people bought Dimensions packs for the minifigures. These are franchises that have never been represented in Lego. I would hate if they released a game where there are Lego Powerpuff Girls and never actually got to buy Lego Powerpuff Girls.
@The_AGL_Group3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really think that going into the game for the one goal and one goal alone of 100%ing a specific DLC level was definitely a mindset that only set up the game for disappointment, simply because that's not how the game was meant or designed to be played and runs into those issues you mentioned. Personally, I do think that Lego Dimensions gets a pass as a Toys-to-Life game because the toys are actual products that have value outside of the context of the game, as opposed to static figurines of generic monster designs that look like they were ripped out of a mobile game. I didn't mind the fact that the packs didn't have to be paid, since most of the packs I was interested in had value symbiotically between the toy and the game - the fact that you could get Lego minifigures of Sonic, Chell, Mr. T, and so on alongside miniature builds based on their source material and a decent amount of playable game content made the value more than apparent. Regardless, even as a defender I do think this game was overpriced, and either the character packs should have been priced at the normal price rate of standalone Lego or substantially dropping the cost of the base set to $40 or so. While I do loathe the concept of "on-disc DLC," that isn't actually the case with most of the game's content, individual franchises generally had to be downloaded separately and were very clearly intended to be expansion content and not base content. Still, I'll fully admit that the only reason gating off extra content within existing levels is that I usually was looking to buy that character anyway or already had it. When I came across it when trying out Skylanders, I dropped the game right there and stopped playing to this day. It is a bit of a dick move that certain abilities are locked to singular characters/packs, especially when some of them are a bit redundant. Sure, I like Doctor Who and Back to the Future moderately and bought their packs anyway, but the fact that TARDIS travel and DeLorean travel are two independent things is dumb. (I get that the TARDIS does time and space while BttF only does time, but I don't think people would be that worried over BttF vehicles being able to access different areas in space--) I don't know, I guess I'm meandering here, but I feel the make or break for a person's enjoyment of this game as released is the mindset they have when they approach it, whether the expansion content is additive or subtractive. While I disagree that it's subtractive, I do think that progression should have been approached differently for completionists, such as having separate tracking within a world for completion of content that can be achieved with the characters/content it was designed for and segmenting off things like that Ethan Hunt area as firmly "extra," but I'm not sure how that would be implemented since open world access is granted by any single character of a series, so it'd be possible to enter the PPG world as Buttercup alone and not have access to Blossom or Bubbles' abilities, and the fact that the game is inherently designed to encourage players to use crossover characters even independent of the predatory angle - game-design-wise, only building Townsville around the abilities of the PPGs would really limit the options for puzzles and interactivity. In their effort to give every character and expansion value outside of their designated "area," they ended up making things more cluttered and potentially frustrating...

@ShadowHut. Lego Dimensions is a toys-to-life game based around an existing toy, and the defining trait of Lego is that they’re cross-compatible packs of parts that can be used to construct a specific target model or anything the customer wishes. Therefore, a Lego Dimensions expansion toy has a function outside of being a physical display object and in-game content; as a pack of bricks that have a distinct play feature that encourages creativity, as well as minifigure characters that are compatible with your Lego collection. Sure, they were overpriced from the usual value of their components without their NFC tags and associated in-game content, but it’s a functional Lego set either way. Compare this to Skylanders - while ostensibly spinning off of the Spyro IP, the vast majority of the retail products are original characters/creatures that have no play features apart from a scant few. They’re little figurines of designs that have no existing external worth when taken as individual products detached from their NFC tags to be used in the game. Outside of the Skylanders fanbase, the only figures to gain any attention in the larger toy or gaming spheres were the ones that were modeled after existing game characters, like Crash, as otherwise they weren’t appealing to non-players and had basically no physical play aspects. Kids that got into Skylanders wanted to collect them like Pokémon, sure, and the designs are surface-level appealing to children, but despite being marketed as “toys to life,” they’re not interactive and wouldn’t be bought as an action figure. Then there’s amiibo - still no play features so it’s still not really a “toy,” but there was inherent value to the figures since they were (relatively) affordable merch of video game characters that might otherwise not have easily received mainstream-retailer toys. Couple that with launching with Super Smash Bros, a series that not only featured a wide variety of established characters but also had prominent in-game iconography of characters in static poses on small bases (trophies), and you have a surefire way to guarantee sales beyond people that would use the NFC chip inside it. There’s a reason they’re the only one still ongoing. Disney Infinity, like Lego and Nintendo, has existing IP on its side to provide appeal and value, but has less of the uniqueness that amiibo often provided for the characters it sold. Action figures of the characters being sold were (and despite the extinction of toy stores, basically still are) highly ubiquitous, often with posing or action capabilities. In a way, they already monopolized their own market of Disney toys, so the value of Disney Infinity figures as Disney toys was generally low unless it was for a character that hadn’t been as marketed in the past few years. Otherwise, what you get out of a Disney Infinity toy is a stylized static figurine of a character and an NFC chip for in-game content. At that point, disregarding the game, which provides more value, a direct Obi-Wan action figure or a somewhat funky Obi-Wan statue?

@ShadowHut. It's less so a factor of "originality" being a bad thing as much as it is that the concept pitch of "Toys to Life," having kids' toys get "portaled" into a video game, implies the two-value proposition: having value as a toy and having value as a game. As such, Lego Dimensions delivers on that concept the most directly. That is the claim I am making. I'm suggesting that Skylanders would have had a better value proposition, both at the time and presently, if the toys were better toys beyond (most of them) being statues of standard kids' fantasy character designs. While its relative longevity and former fad status is undeniable, I still find that the conceptual promise of the genre wasn't met as strongly as it was with Lego Dimensions.

The 360 portal DOES NOT work on any other console. Do not buy it thinking it will work on the Xbox one. And the Xbox one portal is the only one that will work on the series X/S. That is why it cost so much more than the others. Usually about $40 for the portal alone.

Well you did a great job pointing out the main flaw with the toys to life game genre. Completing games like LEGO Dimensions 100% sounds like torture without getting most of the other figures. Especially with the summon-a-hero thing in this game only lasting 2 minutes. And from what I’ve seen the rest of the game has a lot more references to the respective properties in it. Most notably the Sonic and Simpsons parts, from what I can recall that is. Now I’m wondering if you can tackle the line of LEGO PPG reboot sets. As a line of sets based on the reboot was a thing few years ago.

They could've easily made a main story for this pack: Have Mojo Jojo or him want to use the portal to conquer otherworlds that don't have the meddling powerpuffs, and the powerpuffs have to thwart their villainious plans heck, you could even use the legoness to make some sort of weird fusion for the final boss or something I dunno I'm just an ideas girl

I'm not gonna lie, before watching this video I knew Lego dimensions was a thing but I didn't know what type of video game it was exactly, like I just thought this game was like Lego Star wars but on a much bigger scale and that the powerpuff girls and other additional content was just DLC you could buy from the PS store/Wii u shop/ Xbox store

I actually found the Xbox 360 game at Ross of all places for only around 15$. Then I bought the Xbox One disk and portal separately and then I bought the Portal 2 level pack since I love Portal! This game is pretty good if you buy it for under 40$ not counting character or level packs.

30:45 The same exact thing happened to me as well. (and, yes, I too was using the "Hire-A-Hero) I really hate glitches. I have an entire drawer full of Lego Dimension characters. I probably spent about $200 (not including the starter pack) on all of these characters. I'm thinking of just playing the game again from scratch just so I can get my money's worth.

I couldn’t get past the simpsons level normally because my game wouldn’t save beyond that point so I stopped playing it. I also played skylanders back when it was brand new, I played them in this order Giants(3ds), Giants(WiiU), Spyro’s Adventure(Wii), Swap Force(WiiU) and Trap Team(Xbox 360). I still love my skylanders collection.

You know how I'd play this? If they rereleased this game, but take out all the stupid toy to life parts of the game. Make all the levels, the vehicles, the characters, worlds, everything available at the beginning. This concept is too good to be locked behind stupid toy to life nonsense. Actually. . . why DID this need to be a toy to life game? The other lego games have a stuff ton of things crammed into them, why did THIS specific game need to be toy to life? There's no POINT to it, other than to spend hundreds of bucks on legos that you probably won't even play with. Here's what I do, if I were handling this game. Re-release the game, call it the 'Lego Dimensions: Complete Edition', every pack that came WITH the game: Starter, story, level, etc. etc. and make it ALL available at the start. Put in a feature where you are allowed up to multiple characters to play with, to make it so certain things can be done, iron out any glitches or flaws in the original game, give ALL of the worlds outside of the main story. . .. A STORY with main quests and side quests. . heck, maybe even MAKE worlds for all the characters that DIDN'T get worlds outside of the main story, and then when all was said in done, release it to the masses. . and if they loved it, make a SEQUEL and capitalize on that cliffhanger they never got to follow up on on. But hey, that's just me.

@@captainsnookinc2118 Yeah, it would've been nice if there were something like this present. Almost all other lego games let you purchase characters permanently with the studs you collect and that mechanic works perfectly for those games. Shame it wasn't done for this one.

The reason the three girls were separated weren't because of bias but it was to keep in line with other packs. There are 4 types of packs: Story Packs are the largest pack, containing one character, one vehicle/tool, a new setting for the portal base, and a brand new set of levels. Level Packs WERE the largest packs before season 2 started, containing on character, one vehicle, one tool, and a whole level. Team Packs contain two characters and two vehicles. Fun Packs are the smallest, with only one character and one vehicle. Notice how none of the packs allow three characters aside from the Starter pack? That's why. Bubbles and Blossom were in the team pack, and Buttercup was in the fun pack. Also, I was a huge fan of this game, so I have quite some knowledge of it.

While I'm not a massive super PPG fan (though these videos are nothing but excellent), what i am is a super massive fan of the Scooby Doo franchise. And its addition into LD always had me curious, you can tell despite the pay wall stuff at the very least, a lot of work was put into making this game and its very admirable. Stuff like this makes me kinda tempted to seek out the game and pack more (even if just in letsplays possibly) because tbh id probably be just as giddy playing the SD pack as much as Shadow was trying this out despite its flaws. Seeing all the fun references, playing with the world, ect. I love playing lego games already, having one with one of my favorite frachises is even better, I just wish it had its own game singularly cause I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

29:15 they are always trying to find some way to sap as much money as possible out of people. The most recent scheme ive seen is making games subscription based, basically you pay to *rent* the game, stop paying, you cant play the game anymore. I hope it doesnt become a big trend because its stupid.

Some of them are like that, but then you got stuff like Xbox's Game Pass, which is an pretty great value. You pay an monthly fee for access to an evergrowing libary of games, and if you want to own an game part of Game Pass, then you can buy it at an discounted rate. Game Pass Ultimate is even better, as you get all the benefits of Xbox Live Gold, alongside exclusive perks, the ability to game on the cloud, quests to be able to get more Microsoft Rewards points, an deeper discount for games you want to buy to own, and much more.
