For me personally, I'm not into polygamy as a woman and I would never want to be with a man that wants it. He shall find another woman that agrees with it because that's not going to be me. I can't give that to him, which means I would rather him find someone that agrees/doesn't mind it. The reason why I'm against it was the reason that this was allowed to happen. Muslim men used to marry women who are divorced, who are widowed, or had responsibilities and needed help with it. It was done out of kindness. Now, it's almost done if he thinks his wife is not good enough for him physically, and he wants something else. A lot of men these days choose to have secret wives and create a relationship with them that does not allow them to have children and for it to be just a fun fling, and then they will go find their next victim. It's like men these days do not marry for the right reasons. One of the main conditions for polygamy, is besides the fact that you have to fulfil all the requests and be able to provide for them and be responsible for them, is the fact that you have to have everything equal for them. Unfortunately, some men make it very clear that they have favourites, and they prefer a wife over another. In Islam, the most important thing is to have everything equal between them. However, it is impossible to have everything equal between four different women, which kind of makes this hat on. It's like you're allowed to, but you can't. It also makes me feel insufficient as a woman, it's like as if I'm lacking something, and he's looking for the thing that I lack in another woman. Of course, if I can't get him children, that's a different situation. But if I can, and I'm doing my best, I don't see why there is another reason to have a different wife.

There’s theory and then there’s real life. In real life, majority men cannot afford a second wife unless they expect their wife to financially contribute to the household so he can afford to be with another woman. I don’t know any woman who would allow her husband to marry a second wife on her dime 😂 the reality is, the Muslim community waste their time with these discussions. This is a discussion for the 1%. If you work a regular 9-5, live in a western country and make less than 250k a year, you cannot afford a second wife + second family/children. Trying to get a second wife when YOU KNOW and YOUR FIRST WIFE KNOWS that you cannot afford this, will just result in your second wife divorcing you (not because of the polygamy, but because you can no longer financially take care of her and your children with this new second wife expense), and you will destroy your relationship with your first wife and your children. The key is to just marry a woman who is open to polygamy instead of trying to force it on a woman that does not want that life.

I don’t know, as a Muslim woman it still seems a bit unfair to me.. I don’t want to feel like his love is being divided amongst others. I can’t even imagine him looking at another woman not to mention sleeping with and having kids with her. He’s my partner, we have a special connection, inside jokes, years of built trust and love, i know it’s not the intention but I know most woman would not help but feel inferior in a way if he disregarded all that and found another woman. My grandfather had 2nd wife and to this day we still have problems in my family because of it. Even though the parties involved all died. If you’re trying to escape the problems in your marriage with 2nd marriage it’s not going to work. Just makes everything worse. And the children that grows up in this environment tends to negative views on marriage and Islam. I have seen plenty of people that never want to get married because of this reason.

What you say is kind of misleading, especially when you talk about natural inclinations. If all men are polygamous by nature, why does Allah mention monogamy in the Holy Quran by saying you can content yourself with one wife? It's like Allah is not going to tell you to drink water only if you're wealthy because water is essential to you. Since the majority of men cannot afford to marry multiple women, why would men be polygamous by nature? Why isn't polygyny the norm then? Why did Allah allow men to marry only one woman if it's against their nature? Most men nowadays just want to marry multiple women for the wrong reasons. As a Muslim woman, I’m not against polygyny, but an option isn’t an obligation, a norm, or a general truth.

I feel like men nowadays seek to marry another woman because they feel their first wife is lacking in one way or another e.g., she’s not as young or beautiful, she may not want to have intercourse, or more kids etc. in this sense how can a man treat his first wife equally to a second or third if he feels she is lacking or defective? Polygamy causes heartbreak i know as my poor nan was one and she had such hardship from it the marriage didn't last. It can work if the situation is right i.e poor lady in need of shelter etc. but most muslim women would only be ok with this arrangement if she doesn't love him but thats ok as not everyone can marry for love. Love marriages are a special blessing not afforded to many. Some women may just need basic needs met and be second wife thats ok too.

If a woman doesn't want her man to have a second wife, she can put it in her Nikkah contract for a reason and it is permissible because Allah the most knowing knows that some women would not want that. Everyone is not tailored the same way. You cannot just say women should accept it and if not, there is a problem in her Taqwaa. I don't know why men are acting as if women are depriving them from their right when they put those contracts. This is permissible to the woman as much as it is permissible to men to marry many.

Cannot stop a man from what he is allowed to do. What you can stipulate in the nikah contract is that you can divorce if he remarries. And that stipulation must be agreed upon by both. You cannot take away a man’s right, but you can give yourself the right to divorce. There is a difference between restricting someone’s right and givving yourself a right.

Finding a spouse who is okay with our goals in the future (for example: marrying more than one wife). Its not wrong at all from both sides (for a woman to prefer a husband who only wants one wife or for a man who prefers to have more than one wife). Its just both sides need to be honest. May Allah SWT ease everything for us

You should really check with religious scholars and rulings (fatwas) before saying it's not allowed(haram). She is not going to stop him from remarrying, but she will get divorced if she wants to. Even if it's your right to remarry you cannot force her to accept it. It would be a lot better if the partners just talked it all through and agreed on everything upfront, instead of wasting time and energy on it later on.

I really like the way this video was broken down. As a sister who has never warmed to the idea of polygyny I think it would be nice to see you discuss (perhaps in a future podcast) reasons why a man would want to marry another woman other than the obvious. Because even as you said, it was intended for a limitation so it’s not just for sexual desires, because what if a man is not fulfilled after wife no. 4? If this man wants to increase his Imaan as he is improving in his deen through other sunnah practises it seems more understandable in my eyes. I think it’s important to be honest as men know that most women get jealous and ‘hiding’ is not deemed a just way to act towards your wife especially if she never agreed to this. May Allah reward the women who welcome this and grant them the highest levels of Jannah, Ameen.

Honestly multuple wives is a very difficult thing that many brothers and sisters can't do at all. The marriage is not only between the man and the women but also the women have some sorta of relationship with each other because of the kids and the same husband. I as a muslim woman I know I can't handle it because I have great amount of jealousy and want 100% monogamy where I don't even allow opposite gender friends. It is a tough thing that many people can't 100% do which can lead to hell. I will choose monogamous husband and if he wants 2nd or more wives, I will ask for divorce because I know I will probably commit a sin by either being mean to him, or to one of the women or I will disobey him. I also know many men can't treat all women equal so he will most likely earn sins too. It is easier to avoid hell fire instead of playing too close to it for me.

Thank you for talking about this topic. I've met too many convert sisters who accept to be the "secret" second wife to a man that helped them accept Islam. They will give away their rights and dignity for the sake of man that will lead them to jennah. They get so delusional and suffer with depression and suicidal thoughts. When these men's actions don't align with their words, they blame Islam and leave the religion. The emotional trauma that they cause to the first wife and her children is unethical. I would never wish that for any Muslims. I personally accept polygamy for my husband. When and if he ever does decide to take on another wife, I would love to support him. I would make sure he gives the sister her rights. Inshallah. Polygamy is Sunnah and it can work in these times. We just have to be transparent of our expectations and needs.

You can never fulfill your wives’ rights if you have a wife in secret. Never. You’re either going to be lying unnecessarily to one wife, or oppressing the other wife by not giving her equal nights. Polygyny is very very difficult nowadays as well, unless the man is wealthy or lives in a country with a low cost of living. I’ve been in a polygynous marriage, my husband had a 2nd wife and it wasn’t easy for any party but it can work with maturity and if you’re all on the same page. It’s also not as heart wrenching as women think once you get over the initial transition period, you get used to it, it takes work and effort and there’s difficult moments but it’s possible.

He doesn't need her permission, however the Prophet pbuh said that MARRIAGES MUST BE PUBLICIZED FOR MANY LOGICAL AND PRACTICAL AND SOCIAL REASONS. Women are very naturally jealous. A good amount of jealousy in both men and women is healthy. I agree with poly with those who can afford it and be fair with both families and women. And I do believe a good, caring husband will consider what is best for his family, whether that is monogamy or poly. I do believe in many cases, monogamy is best for the family unit, especially in the uk with the cost of living so high and the demand of a good father presence for children. However! that being said, I think it takes a very rare man to be able to navigate that fairly. On the day of judgement do you want to be slanted because you favored one wife over the other? In this current climate, it is very hard to give fairly in time and money. And if you expect to reduce the lifestyle you gave the first or force the first into a job to accomodate and afford another wife, this is wrong. Are you emotionally mature enough to handle two women? Can you be fair? Do you have enough time? Do you have enough time for the children? I can confidently say, personally, poly. is not for me. I know myself as an individual and my husband is on the same page as me. I require a lot of attention to be feel love, I can admit that, without it I feel very emotionaly alone and it does affect my mental wellbeing. I do have a lot of skills and hobbies but I still have a natural level and need of attention so, I do not feel that I best suit poly,. but I try to make it up by being a good wife. I cook well, I learnt lots of traditional turkish food for my husband. I try my best to be attentive to my husband and listen well. I'm not perfect, but I do try! I prioritise my time with him, I dress well for him. I adore my husband. It is about respecting one another enough to talk through it. If it is not something that you are both on board with, divorce amicably or comprimise. Women are emotional and need reassurance. As a man, if you want to have a second wife... man up... tell your wife... be honest... and suffer the consequence if that is not for your wife or end up with two wives! And for women, if there is no legitimate reason to deny this request, talk it through your husband, get to the root and work it out from there. Is there a way you can be a better wife? Do you need to find more time for each other? Is something lacking? What are your concerns?

What are your thoughts on Muslim marriage contracts without marriage by law? I often especially here in Germany come across clashes between the Islamic and legal law of a country. Polygamy for example can't be acknowledged by law, the weddings with 2 witnesses, a wali and the mahr are not aknowledged by the legal marriage office. If a Muslim legally divorces his wife and takes or wants to take a new one he must wait for 1 year until the legal marriage is over. To be homest i have this big hate on polygamy becuz of my dad, even tho its allowed in islam but he and many men in my family are the reason i hated it. Personally for me, i dont mind getting a co-wife if my husband ( with an Islamic reason) wanna get another, it will be fun and i will be less lonely having another woman i can chat and have fun with ( thats my opinion). He (my dad) has three wives but he isnt doing it for sunnah sake or anything just to compete and put differences between the women and the kids like literally . Till to this day i cant even call the house i love in a home. Its just crazy. I cant explain futhwr about why i dislike it so much but wallah this is getting unbearavle. And the worse part it some men are doing it for the same reason to compete instead of completing the half part of youe deen with their wife(ves)

It’s so important that you mentioned that even if a woman does everything right he might still want another woman, because some men use the fact that a wife wasn’t doing enough that’s why they got another one , again I think a man being honest about what he wants can save himself and the person he wants to be with a lot of headaches and heartaches just be honest that this is something you want to practice so the woman knows what to expect , a man that is brave would not be going around hiding things instead he’s going to be straight forward , at the end of the day everyone is free to do want they want men can practice it and women can choose if that’s something she can deal with , it can be a lot smoother if the man is upfront with his intentions and fair if he gonna do it and the women are not forced or lied to about it or treated fairly if she accepts it
