I used to work at the Northwest Territorial Mint. This is the first time I've seen a fake bar made to look like one from NWTM. The shiny material they made the fake NWTM bar is clad steel. They take pot metal and plate it with copper, then silver plate it. Likewise the small ones are plated brass.

The magnet slide trick is called inductance. In highly conductive metals, passing a magnet across the surface induces a current in a direction perpendicular to the direction of travel. This causes the magnet to slow down. The same thing will happen to copper. However copper is slightly less dense than silver and you can confirm by weighing the sample and accurately determining volume to determine density.

The actual principle is called Lenz's Law. You can find some interesting videos of this principle on KZbin. Years ago I set up a test station for kids to drop strong magnets through pipes of various alloys with holes in them so that you could watch the magnets float down at various speeds.

The "silver" inside the fake one is probably iron or soft steel. The yellow is brass. Sometimes magnets will stick slightly to brass if it's junk brass (impure made out of what they had on hand). The red color can be a bronze or copper. If pure copper it'll pass the magnet slide test as both silver and copper has very high electric conductance and the difference isn't noticeable with such rudimentary test. The reason for the magnet to slide down silver slowly is because of the eddy currents generated in the metal. It has nothing to do with silver's magnetic properties - it has everything to do with silver's conductivity. As said pure copper also conducts electricity very well (as do aluminium and gold) but mix it with zinc (brass) or tin (bronze) even a tiny bit and it'll have a huge impact on conductivity. Since pure copper isn't the cheapest material brass is often used as zinc is cheap but also results in it'll fail the magnet slide test. Copper will fail on the tester however as it's much more sophisticated in the method of determing materials conductivity.
@thinkingoutloud6741
@thinkingoutloud6741 4 жыл бұрын
The slow magnet slide test will act the same way with copper. It’s about conductivity. Silver and copper are both conductors and non-magnetic. Consider acquiring silver plated copper for a test. Might be a good video.

This why I do not buy gold or silver bars or coins. Instead, I paid off my mortgage, bought a car with cash, have a large stock of food, guns and ammo. When the next depression hits, and it has already started, no one will want to take gold or silver for goods or services. We will be back to a barter economy and food and ammo will become the chief items of trade.

You could also use the old density test to test if it's real silver as well, a la archimedes. You get a cup, put it inside a bowl, fill the cup completely to the rim with water, gently lower the silver into it so the water runs over the side of the cup and into the bowl. Then collect the water from the bowl and weigh it. The density of water is 1 gram per cubic cm or 1 gram per milliliter. So if you get say, 10g of water you know your bar is 10 cubic centimeters in volume. You then weigh the bar of silver. The density will be the weight per volume. So if you get a weight of 25 grams of silver for that 10 cubic cm bar that gives a density of 25/10 or 2.5 grams per cubic centimeter, which is not even close to the density of silver. The density of silver is 10.49 grams per cubic cm. So if you have a 10 cubic cm (ml) piece of silver, it should be 104.9 grams. Keep in mind you do need a scale that's accurate to within 0.01 gram, but they're not all that expensive these days. I got one from China for about $5. And of course, there are many websites which describe this process better than I have and will also include calculators online for your convenience. So I'd strongly recommend checking out one of those sites rather than taking my word for it.

My Dad bought fake Silver from China on Ebay for $14/oz (this was a few months ago when Silver was about $18) It said it was .999 Fine German Silver. A Magnet stuck to them. That is NOT Silver made in Germany. Here is what it says online. "German silver, name for various alloys of copper, zinc, and nickel, sometimes also containing lead and tin. They were originally named for their silver-white color, but use of the term silver is now prohibited for alloys not containing that metal." I would send them to you but I made the seller take them back for a full refund and gave the guy a very nasty feedback. You could go to Ebay and look up .999 German Silver and do a video about the rip off. Here is a example. How soon everyone forgets.. weight the bar. Immerse bar in high quality accurate and precise graduated cylinder with known volume of distilled water... divide weight of bar by volume displaced and get the apparent density. The issue with the pycnometers is that they are notoriously non-accurate. According to Galileo, the Archimedes trick was in weighting the object submerged in water on a string and compare it with its weight in the air. The difference in weight gives you the volume of the object, then you can calculate the density. (With the platform scales we usually have now it is a non-trivial task, though.) For the 1 oz bar the volume difference btw silver and nickel would be ~0.5 cu.cm i.e. ~15 drops of water. Easy to weigh but rather difficult to see looking at the water level change.

Rare earth metal magnets are not expensive due to the elements being so 'rare', but the purification is more expensive than most other metals. Silver is easy to purify. In the old silver mining ⚒ district around Kongsberg here in Norway, most of the silver is found in calcite minerals, as threads of metalic silver, with a little of copper and other metals (even small amounts of gold), in it. You also have some sulphid (chalcopyrite) copper, with a little silver sulphid, in the same ore! The natural silver, is rarer than the metal itself! It is not legal to take out of the place now. But, tourists from EU, were often caught smuggling it out of the country. Almost all Norwegian coins, from 1546 and 1628-1800, were made from that silver. The mines are now a museum.

For those interested, a plexiglass coin drop chute and be made and lined with those magnets. This permits dripping coins in the slot, and noting the fall velocity. With a wide slot, packaged coins and bars can be tested without opening the packages. With a pair of inductive proximity detectors at the bottom and a simple timer module, the interval between the sensors give a good indication of how much the velocity is retarded by highly conductive silver. Works on gold clad tungsten bars and coins too. Tungsten is higher resistance than fold so it will fall faster. Test is as simple as dropping the coin or bar down the slot and quantifying the fall speed retardation based on metal conductivity internally. A silver or gold plating on brass or tungsten won't fool it. it even sorts copper and zinc pennies. This is an effective tester you can build at home with magnets and plexiglass. Bonus, it works on bars and coins inside packages.

I'm curious about the big bar that screws up the machine, is that actually magnetic? I don't mean will a magnet react to it. I mean is it magnetized, will it pick up paper clips or something?

pretty interesting, thanks. I saw you got a Morgan Dollar as well turns out fake. I also bought one of these Morgan Dollars coins but it has passed the magnetic test, only the dimensions seem to be different from those stated on Wikipedia. I just don't want to destroy the coin for now. how can i be sure that it is real? Thanks

I got fake silver towne bars that were wrapped in plastic and looked new. I always open the plastic and one dropped on concrete. I noticed it didn't dent nor did my other pieces scratch its surface. All fake from a reputable dealer who almost didn't believe me when I returned them. Ended up getting the secret service involved.

This was definitely a nice video, thanks! One thing I would like to see is: Can your verifier verify real silver thru plastic thicker than the soft plastic on your (good) NTM bars? Place a piece of known good silver inside the hard plastic case the bad NTM bar came in and see if your machine will verify good silver on the table part.

Magnet sliding down the side is a great demonstration of "Eddy currents". Take a small marble and drop it down a short chunk of 1/2" copper pipe. almost instantly drops to the bottom. Now drop your magnet thru the pipe.... and wait...

I'm an advocate for learning through everyday experiences, and I want to encourage the presenter to push himself to do a bit more of that: like using the term "eddy current" or "resonant frequency" (for the ping test) or possibly explaining a little bit on how the precious metal tester works. The same thing with the history of some of the coins.

Not all sellers on Ebay are crooks. I have bought from U.S. sellers and got real Silver. I did do the magnet Check on them and also checked if the coins rang when struck. I also checked their weight.

@Dakota beck When I said I checked them for ring I meant that they ring properly with the right tone and sustain. Checking for weight and size is a good way to verify Silver as the fakes are usually off. Although they are getting better.

I would be willing to be 2 things on those bars. First, the "Nazi" bars are 5 grams of brass and the extra weight is the actual silver plating, which is why they kind of show up on the tester. Second, the seller probably knew they were fake, which is why they would put them in with real bars, so they can get double the price on the overall weight of actual silver and be able to feign ignorance if someone calls them out on it.

Looks like those might be made out of stainless steel as that might shine like silver but it'll never stick to a magnet. Fake Chinese stainless steel does, however, so this is actually pretty interesting.

Hi there, I have a question about sliver coin. I've got two Royal Canadian Mint Maple Leaf 9999 1oz sliver coin. When i put it on my scale it says 1.10oz or 1.0ozt. Is this suppose to be correct? The coin says 1oz but its measured at 1.10oz. Sorry if this question sounds stupid, i'm new to sliver coins.

Oh, I am nervous now. I purchased 10 1oz bars of silver from a local shop over a period of a few months. 9 appear fine. one is showing tarnish. Not a financial disaster, I know, but Silver was at $21 per oz, and I had to be ripped off. I would expect that the shop has one of these machines to test? I have a bullet scale. I may weigh mine to see how it shows weight.

@@boodro2122 I weighed a few of them, including the one that made me nervous. They seem to have the correct weights. The tarnished looking bar is from Sunshine minting Inc. weighs in at 1.003 ozt, or troy ounce. The others I weighed were 1.029 ozt (APMEX) .999 (Generic coin), and 0.999 ozt (Another generic coin). The Sunshine mint made me nervous because it appeared to be in a factory sealed plastic cover that I had to cut to get open, yet it is definitely a browner color than the other three. I know silver tarnish can look brown, but how could it tarnish in a sealed plastic cover? Do coins shops have a way to seal coins into a soft plastic sleeve so it doesn't look like it has a seam?
@boodro2122
@boodro2122 4 жыл бұрын
@@jshicke Not sure about your question, but I bought an ounce of bullion once with skull & bones stamped in it and it weighed 1.033. It was legitimate, too. I'm no connoisseur, just an avid admirer. I suppose a coin could develope patina with a sleeve on it depending on what/how it was compromised prior to being "sealed". Otherwise, maybe it was tarnished before being sealed, idk. But it sounds like you have everything in order. I'm glad you have little to nothing to worry about.
