The other thing about the non-football parts of the "Christmas truce" story is that while it was probably the friendliest contact across enemy lines during the entire war, it was also a fairly common occurrence for temporary ceasefires to be arranged. Mostly for burying the dead after they'd been rotting in No Man's Land for weeks and no one could stand the smell any more, and sometimes while that was going one the soldiers would trade cigarettes and buttons and stuff. I've also heard a story about one time the trenches on both sides flooded and everyone had to get out so they wouldn't drown, and they just kind of looked at each other and nodded like "We're not going to make this worse than it already is."

The WW1 Christmas Truce was the first Christmas of the war, and I suppose the soldiers on both sides remembered previous Christmases. I think there was very little fighting in the days after; sure I read something about, when they were ordered to open fire, they'd shout out and warn the other side first. Eventually the British troops, at least, were pulled out of position and replaced by new troops who had no friendly connection with the opposing Germans - must have been a shock for the Germans when thy suddenly got fired on with no friendly warning first! And, by the time the next Christmas rolled around, no one was feeling particularly friendly to anyone on the other side. [] Wonder if the Immortal Jellyfish keeps its adult memories when it regresses? Not sure what it'd have to remember, but surely it'd be handy to retain any survival tips it might have picked up?

(Puts on linguist hat.) No, what's done in Germanic languages is so much simpler than what happens in polysynthetic languages. What people forget is that English is just as agglutinative as the other Germanic languages are. The only difference is that in Dutch and German, they position stress slightly differently than how English speakers do. We _only_ put in spaces because we don't know how _not_ to put them there. If we hadn't borrowed "glove" from French, it's be a "handshoe" to us. You can break most of those long German and Dutch compound nouns into English phrases just by translating the individual segments into English words, dropping the odd -s or -en, (which like turning bees' hive into beehive) and just inserting spaces. German is _not_ hard beyond memorising gender. And Dutch is practically trivial.

If you want a simplified example, it's like rather than saying "the brown dog flew to france", you said "brown-dog-topic here-there-like.bird-move-go-air" and each one of those bits separated by dashes are individual morphemes, but have to be arranged in a partiicular way. It's more complicated than that, and phonology is involved, but that's basics.

But putting the drive in the freezer packed in dry rice revived the drive long enough to read all the data off it. The theory is the lower temperature shrank some mechanical parts just enough to make them work, and the rice was there to absorb any moisture from the cooled air.

Certified repair tech here. Rice is a desiccant and will dry out a wet device before corrosion causes arcing of components. It will not repair burned out components but it can prevent further damage or rescue a device before damage occurs. Water doesn't magically damage devices on contact. It needs time to corrode components or electricity to cause arcing.
