Fake Grover Tuners

So I finally got around to replacing the fake Grover tuners on this Chibson. The fakes ones were ... ok ... but not awesome. Really they just kinda suck. They are replaced with Gotohs and the process is accompanied by various thought and ramble.

A tip for getting the tuners straight. Is use a straight piece of wood above each pair as they have straight tops. The wood will align the tuners .

Great video man. I've stopped buying Grovers on eBay because of all the fakes on there. I do love real locking Grovers though. My Trad Pro II came with them and they make changing strings so easy. I've also had good luck with my Gotoh's. I use them primarily on my partscasters. They make really good stuff and feel extremely precise.

Great Job Ry! You can't go wrong with Gotoh stuff. That Chibby looks awesome. The headstock looks perfect. You actually got the right sized diamond inlay. The one on my Chib is smaller. Same size as an Epi : ( Is that the stock nut? Anyway. Your vids are never boring unlike mine. Rock on buddy, & lemme know what happens when the wifey finds out about the Curt Cobain guitar! ;p

There are varying degrees of Grovers too. When you said “Grover’s cost about 80$”, that for quality USA built generally 18:1 ratio tuners. The Grover’s on your Epiphone are better than the fakes on your Chibson. But your tuners on your Epiphone aren’t the best quality either. Those are masses produced and outsourced for Asian built guitars. Gotoh makes great tuners. I’ve got them on my ESP. But top shelf Grovers are equally as good. Unfortunately, most people only get to sample the cheaper outsourced Grovers.

I got the impression that Grover outsourced their production of OEM tuners for Asian guitars to one or more Asian factory/factories. That's why these tuners are never in retail wrappings. If the tuners on a cheap Chibson are "OK", I see no reason that you should swap them for Gotoh tuners. You can tighten these Grovers by tightening the screw in the tuner knob a little. So, I don't think they are really fake, but not meant to be sold as a "retail" product. OEM stuff was meant for B2B (guitar factories).

I noticed the same thing, the real Grover’s have a way more precise tuning ratio than these Chinese knockoffs. If you turn a Grover, it will move the string every millimeter, with fakes, you have to do almost a quarter turn to see and hear a difference. I have 4 Chinese guitars and ever one of them, I strip all the hardware and electronics and replace them with name brand stuff from the USA or Germany. But GOTOH, is an awesome brand, I think they’re made in Japan, the only country in Asia that makes quality everything. Anybody that likes Chinese tuners, really doesn’t know anything about guitars - sorry😂😂😂

Hey dude, sorry to break it to you, but your other Grovers are fake too! The actual button is too flat and semi-circular. Also, the "O" on the genuine ones is shaped more like a zero..."0" than an O. You can't judge just by the lettering alone.

so this one is fake, they even have a "Made in USA" engraved on the back of the headstock.....tsk tsk..its going to be hard to really tell if its original or not
