Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould investigate more potentially valuable works of art, beginning byhelping a man who believes he owns a painting by French post-impressionist Edouard Vuillard. Thequest for provenance begins in Geneva, where Philip compares the picture with a huge Vuillard workcreated in 1919, trying to find out whether the same materials were used in both, while Fionauncovers clues to the picture's origins in France and Holland. Once they have enough evidence, theyseek the approval of the Wildenstein Institute in Paris - but these are the same experts whonotoriously rejected a highly credible Monet back in the very first episode. Have they done enoughto prove this picture is genuine?8)

I wouldn't trust the Wildenstein's catalogue raisonée to actually present all the verified works of an artist, considering they accept or deny paintings based more on politics and whim than evidence. They're also crooked as a clothes hanger - fraud, money-laundering, possession of stolen artwork. I've been disgusted with them since I saw the episode with that Monet painting that was beyond a doubt authentic, and they refused to agree bc their father had decided in the past it was fake and they didn't want their dad to look bad. Now all of them look bad.

From the perspective of an art lover it matters whether a painting is genuine or not. For the art business it doesn't matter at all, because it's just a money laundering circus. A handful of people in NY, London and Hong Kong decide which works of art they're going to use to keep the money laundering going. The buyers aren't even taking the paintings home. The paintings just go back to the vault in Switzerland where they came from, waiting for the next pre-planned money exchange.

Funny, I feel the other way. As An art lover I feel It doesn't matter WHO painted it as long as it's beautiful It is only the art market who cares who painted it. Is a painting more beautiful when you know who painted it ?

A copy that admits to being a copy is not theft. I figure it doesn't matter who's name is on it. It is it's own thing. Why is an ugly scribble by Picasso more valuable than a lovely Gullackson ? Because he is capable of such beauty ? So are you. So am I. Value doesn't not come from the potential of the artist. A well running truck is worth more than a poorly running truck no matter if they are both Fords. A running Subaru is worth more than a broken Ford. I understand I'm comparing apples to typewriters here but it illustrates that the value of the art in this Doc is in the name of the artist not in the value of the art itself. These fellas seem to think it only becomes valuable when you know who painted it. I state the name of the artist means nothing. If a copy is better than the original which should be more valuable ?@@jacquesmertens3369

At 56:03. I feel happy for this guy. But I feel crushed on behalf of the old couple who owned BOTH oval Vuillard paintings before him. That sucks. They tried so hard, looking for provenance on their own dime and with their own effort. I like that the University of Edinburgh professor was on their side. But they simply didn't have the money to overcome all these obstacles. This guy got lucky that the BBC decided to make his painting into an episode. Otherwise he would've been on the same boat as the old couple. Now to figure out the e-Bay buyer of the other oval painting.

I meant lucky in the sense that this guy didn’t have to spend his own money pinning down provenance for his Vuillard painting. Searches of this sort are expensive, with the trips to Switzerland, paying experts like Aviva, searching through a million archives and even getting access to a secret vault of art treasures in a Geneva bank. The BBC paid for all of it to make this episode. That’s what I mean by luck, luck the old couple didn’t have.

To some, art is an investment - and a vault is the safest place to store it while it appreciates in value. Moreover, a work being “out of view” for many years could enhance its desirability to future prospective buyers, thus increasing its value. I believe THAT is the point - and protection of fine art is never a waste. Even museums don’t display many of the works they own.

Well, at least that private collector let them compare his/her painting to the one in question - even letting them take paint samples. He/she could have just said "no." It's unfair that some people have the money to have private art collections, but I also don't think art is by nature public property. If a museum paid a high enough price, the owner would probably sell that painting to a museum since it's just sitting in a vault.

I'm fascinated by the attention paid to paintings that are considered valuable. When the artist, as Vuillard, painted the pieces, it was a problem to be solved. An image in the mind to be transferred to canvas, with light, shape, movement, color and texture. When I paint, I don't think of where the painting will eventually go - sold and displayed where? for how long? cherished or forgotten? I just paint what I feel needs to be painted, or a challenge to be solved. I don't think any famous painter would have ever thought of where their painting would be after sold, or after their death. It was just a painting. If it sold, one could buy more paint, or dinner, or pay the rent. Now, because the painter cannot paint any more, the pieces are deemed valuable and investments, and the original worth is transcended by perceived worth, and greed.

The paint used is in fact size paint and not distemper. I used to paint scenery in London and many of the English National Opera sets of the twenties, had been painted with this technique, so any refurbishment was done using size. The advantage of this paint was cost and also the reusability of the canvas. By turning the painting and laying it face down onto sheets of news print, the whole painting could be removed with the application of hot water.

So I had a look and lo and behold the Wildenstein institute seems to have been discredited. Raided by the French Police over tax evasion issues and holding stolen paintings. They appear to have set themselves up as the ultimate arbiters of authenticity and I believe that the Wildenstein institute has been shut down and reinvented themselves as the Wildenstein Plattner institute in New York. Too much power in the hands of too few is never healthy in my opinion and their reinvention promoting accessibility and other " virtues" does not convince me. I hope you find this of interest. My very best wishes to you. Kind regards Paul

Its interesting to watch this cultish search for provenance as the painting is transformed into investment. Seeing that entombed Villuiard, the larger cafe painting, locked away by a wealthy owner about sums up the damage the art market does to the world of art.

Imagine The Warren’s just keeping the painting because it was a beautiful painting, the reward would have been immense.

How exactly? If they stopped researching the painting and kept it, they never would have realized its' value anyway.

giuseppe nero you’re missing my point which is, if they kept it because their hunch was strong and kept on searching, they would have be rewarded with owning the beautiful and historically valuable painting and also vindicated. Of course financial pressures may have been a significant reason for selling. I’m just sorry that they knew they were right but didn’t have the benefit of the Fake or Fortune team to investigate. They knew it was an authentic Vuillard.

I agree. The Warrens didn't deserve to own the painting. They only cared about the monetary value of it, not the artistic value. They dumped it when they couldn't prove it was valuable. Sucks to be them.

One clever thing that came up during one of the episodes was the distinctive way some artists would sign their name over a wet blob of paint, and/or dip their thumb in paint and put the thumbprint on the back of the canvas.

These expert institutes that authenticate paintings seem to dislike ordinary people finding original paintings. I know there are fakes etc. But to dismiss paintings only to reconsider some times many years later is close to fraud. The really dumb thing is the instute couldn't identify an original painting by the artist they are the experts in. I think the previous owners who presented both paintings should seek legal advice to see if then can recover their financhial loss due to the failure to accurately assess the paintings.

If the Frankenstein (Wildenstein) Institute had even the slightest respect for art they would have assisted in validating the obvious. Sadly, it was a snobby, cliquish organization that would rather say “you’re not in the club” and shockingly risk the loss of that art to history (or the dump)… they’d rather do THAT than embrace a newly found Vuillard for the benefit of art itself. The fact that an organization like the Wildenstein was permitted to have any say, let alone the final say, in the authenticity of ANYTHING shows just how contrived & broken the art business has been. It’s quite shocking that the wealthy participate in what, in many instances, is a charade.

I'm surprised that all the descriptions were of the same items in the painting, and no one mentioned what appears to be a large crab flat on the tablecloth right up front. (While this painting keeps being referred to as a restaurant scene, the other is just "oysters".) Also, what's with the weird, comic strip-like treatment of the man's face in the other painting? Looks like something you'd see in a magazine cartoon.

What I don't understand is why an organization like Wildensteins refute paintings based on nothing, because they do not do the legwork we see in these episodes. Surely they have the same resources and would consider the importance of works like this, and that Monet they turned up their noses on. They seem fraudulent to me. In this case, they couldn't possibly question the research. I wonder if they feel foolish at their mistakes.

It wd be awesome if the new owner sells (and why wouldn’t he- wasn’t that the whole point? Prove it’s worth millions not hundreds or thousands???) and gave the previous owners - who knew they were genuine too- a decent cut of the proceeds.

What if the painting had ultimately been valued at only £1,000? Would the previous owners refunded £10,000 to the new owner? No, they wouldn't have. It's a "sucks to be them" situation.

Wow! It was so satisfying to see that the Wildensteins finally accepted it as authentic. I think that when they presented the painting "Bonds de la Seine à Argenteuil" by Monet, they did a bit less reserch compared to this case. 👍

When it comes the the Wildenstein, I doubt any work they claim as authentic and always give a second look to anything they deny. Their decisions are based solely on politics and their competitors and never on the work in question. In this case they were finally forced into the correct decision after denying the work the first time.
