Fake Positivity on Social Media

Faking positivity on social media is far from uncommon.
People who make thousands and thousands of dollars from hosting their own retreats or having a mentorship program must promote themselves as someone who knows what they’re talking about and has all the answers you’re looking for.
And the way that positivity is commonly promoted these days is very unhealthy and harmful. Instead of striving to understand and work through our emotions, we are told to suppress the unpleasant ones and focus on the positives!
Even though people mean well when they give this type of advice, it's not usually the best thing for us to do.

@@pumpuppthevolume The kind of thing is not precise at all anyway. Wikipedia has a lot of explanation to offer about the definition of those words, but in the end, what is “good” or “bad” precisely? It doesn’t matter anyway. Those concepts probably aren’t going to save the planet or help anyone “feeling bad”. I do agree though that seeking opportunities in rather than ignoring problems brings you further in the long run.

@@bangsol7914 it's not about defining good and bad .....it's about expectations of some change in the future if u have the expectation that x will definitely turn into y ...and u want y ....that's positivism realism is realising that x could change to y....and maybe there r things to do to reach y and negativism is .....x will never change to y

@@pumpuppthevolume If you’re talking about the use of those terms in e. g. financial forecasts where you talk about specific figures, I agree that the definition is clear. However, mapping happiness or the quality of life to some one-dimensional number is quite difficult (although yes there are things like Gross National Happiness or Human Development Index).

In fact, there are times when pain is important and can even serve as a caution that something is not right in our lives so that we can act accordingly. Ignoring your negative emotions, IMO, is only going to ruin you in the long run.

@Vered Pinhas, no. There's nothing wrong with you whatsoever. Those are the direct or indirect results of the rampant fake positivity. Just like advertising companies who spend thousands on marketing campaigns to make a simple product appealing and making you feel bad for not having it ( fast food chains, phone commercials, clothes, makeup, you name it) it's something that has been going on since the invention of TV. It's more apparent on these platforms now. Sadly, it's more dangerous now than just advertising products, (cause let's face it, obviously we all need products to live) these fake positivity creators are playing with the mental health of people making them question their life and making them blame themselves for not leading a "happy life". I'm so glad that I just found out about this girl's channel cause it's refreshing to watch someone so kind and real.

Absolutely! This is becoming a problem outside of social media as well. Suddenly, it is wrong to have any emotions which aren't "positive". I went through a breakup in January, and for a while I was without a future living space as my ex and I rented together. The amount of people who told me to "stop crying so much", "just write lists of gratitude!", "do these exercises and everything will be fine" was outstanding. I took it to heart at times because I heard it all over the place. It made me feel terrible. Not only did I resist and suppress my emotions, but I guilt tripped myself every time that natural sadness and grief came up for me. When I finally decided to stop listening to that "advice" and went head-first into the grief did it start to improve.

I am loving how raw this is. I've always really admired honesty. It's truly refreshing to see. I find myself agreeing with you, so many people despise negativity, anger, or any other emotional outburst because they believe we should merely focus on positivity. Unfortunately, life doesn't work all on our own accord. Things are very inexplicable and aren't beyond our control. We should just learn to embrace every emotion that we are feeling.

I live with an autoimmune disease that affects my mental health just as much as my physical health and this “be positive!” BS gets me down. Because as someone who is sick everyday, it’s pretty unrealistic. However what Anna says here is very true. There will be darkness, no matter what your situation is, but true positivity is seeing and believing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, not ignoring the negative feelings the darkness brings you while your in that “tunnel” so to speak.

I've had a similar talk about this in a training workshop. Since no one wanted to comment when being asked about the topic of positivity, I volunteered and mentioned that there was too much emphasis on the positives and that it's simply not real. The world is made of both the positives and the negatives and being able to accept both aspects is what will truly allow us to grow. Even right now, certain positive campaigns and attempts to eradicate the "dark aspects" of humanity is just not helping. People have to learn how to deal, and realize that there are things that will continue to exist no matter the campaign or activism. Light and darkness are one.

could not agree more. I'm thinking a lot about this, and I think by sharing your life publically, it's so easy to just not show up on the bad days, and hop back on the 'gram' when you feel better (what I tend to do). this obviously is a form of self-care for those taking time off, but at the same time portraits such an unrealistic image. so I think it's so vital to share what you just did. another think you said talking about people who literally 'selling themselves" as a brand, meaning doing retreats and mentorships, are NOT portraying their LIFE but their BUSINESS - even if its mainly themselves. they become a service instead of a person. so looking at these people we should always keep that in mind, granting them their masks as long as we recognise them as such. great video. x celine

Many of us treat our social media profiles as they would a resume; curated and clean. The difference is that resumes show our work experience and achievements, and not our personality, or individual struggles and flaws. Being too honest with too many people makes us vulnerable to the worst of the internet, so I think having a "manicured" profile is a kind of social defense mechanism in order to not make waves among your 500 "friends" or 1200 "followers".

This needed to be said. Another thing that bothers me is that when youtubers do open up about their mental health issues it can be viewed as a way to manipulate people into feeling sorry for them. As this can certainly be the case, I still think that life's struggles shouldn't be taboo, and youtubers are certainly people, and as people they must have some normal people problems too. Talking about them can still have a positive net effect by spreading awareness and increasing understanding, and it can help normalize these feelings and encourage people to find the right tools to deal with them.

Of course, we want to be happy most of the time, but just hiding the rest of emotions as if they are some sort of ugly scar that we are ashamed of, is going to make the cause of those emotions worse, especially, if those emotions are shame, hatred and sadness. We need to bring up those emotions even if we consider them as bad or negative emotions just to feel that we are alive, that we actually respond to our environment and how we respond to that environment is the key to define our personality.

Getting frustrated while filming, or forgetting my words, or suddenly thinking "who would watch this?" and then literally sitting back while the camera is still recording and looking so annoyed or pissed off. I felt that so hard lol.

"happy" is literally an entire branch of philosophical thought. Anyone buying janky advice from weirdos on the internet needs to actually develop some critical thinking. Thank you for your effort.

Then there are backstabbing fake friends who treat you like shit, then wonder why you are so negative. What a joke they are.

I really enjoyed your van build and it led me to watch a few more of your videos. I was especially amazed by the trim work and bondo and how you made templates and patterns to make it all come together. It is nice to see someone talk about the reality of life and not sugar coat it just to be popular or to sell youtube videos and get followers. I wish I had done half of what you had done by your age. or even had a clue of what i even wanted by your age. I admire your folks for allowing you and trusting in you to search for your dreams. If I had a daughter I think Id be scared to death to let her go out and see the world like they did but I guess maybe it was something they must of trusted in to encourage you. Keep up the good work. Maybe you will find the answers we all are looking for and can share and show us the way.

The point is not being happy the point is knowing yourself and loving yourself for who you truly are, once you love yourself only then can you love and happiness is about spreading love nothing more .... an open heart is the key to happiness because you will have compassion and be contempt and the cure for a black heart is religion...
