Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life - the “digital layer” - abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?”
Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Her work and expertise have been featured on CBC, CTV & in other local Toronto media. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University.
Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. She primarily speaks about social media, personal branding, and media and mental health. She guest lectured her first MBA class at 21-years-old and has been the youngest speaker as multiple academic conferences. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Communication and Culture with a research focus on social media and mental health, and holds an honours BA from the RTA School of Media at Ryerson.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Only one ive ever had is Facebook and permenantly deleted it three weeks ago. Amazing feeling! People were ripping each other apart saying things on there to other people they didnt know nor would they dare to say in PERSON. I feel very liberated. Also gave up my smart phone as my primary phone and got a land line. Cell stays in car for emergencies only

@Parker Family It can be argued that KZbin is primarily a video streaming platform and to those who don't use the comments section, it can mitigate some of the downsides to Social Media. Although when comments are used, the argument for KZbin being social media is very compelling.

I am 16, always been very insecure. I quit instagram 4 months ago and most of my insecurities went away. I feel like instagram can make even the most confident person very insecure. @@essay4285 Social media is one of the main causes of the mass rapid increase of health disorders in general, physical as well as mental. All the depression, anxiety and stress are the cause of so many of the diseases and illnesses that have developed or/and increased in the 21st century. This goes further, people hurting themselves don't even know that they're hurting themselves. How many people know that watching the television, phone and tablet before going to bed harms physical and mental health? How many people know that aerobic exercise before sleep causes health issues? How many people know that looking at magazine covers harms mental health? The list goes on and on. This period of been bombarded with information and misuse of advanced technology has caused more health issues, since technology advanced in the 21st century that's why we've had this rapid upshoot of both physical and mental health issues in the 21st century.

Hey Gaby! I want to assure you that everyone goes through SM depression and has the feelings you are talking about. I for one disabled all political stuff on FB, even though it got me to unlike everything I previously liked in terms of books, people, etc. I don't know your peers, but it might be due to one or more of a series of scenarios. 0. EQ: You just are a sensible soul and have more compassion for the world and the people living in it (you have a higher level of Emotional Intelligence) 1. Some people have such a strong humanity compass and self awareness that SM just doesn't affect them; 2. Truth: they are lying in order to not seem lesser (extremely common human behaviour); 3. Volume: they aren't paying as much attention to SM as you might be, in terms of screen time. 4. Stoics: Some people feed off negative energy trying to dissipate (I for one also am motivated by harsher conditions & adversity). 5. Some people feed off negative energy trying to replicate it. In my country sometimes I go back to schools and universities to teach different life lessons learned in my professional career. One thing I avidly militate for is SM reduction or removal and the introduction of law that mandates a MINIMUM 16 YEARS AGE LIMIT till a person is allowed on SM, or similar platforms. (the young are most affected)

We all think that social media is the platform where everyone just interact with each other and post pictures but in reality social media is too much toxic and nowadays it's highly toxic! I just got addicted to it that i used to spent my half day scrolling and being more and more insecure about myself so i decided to deactivate it temporarily and after that i felt so better infact i learned lot of things and used my time productively and my life got happier. Deactivating social media was one of the best decision!

I struggled quitting social media multiple times. I would always go back after 3/4 days or a week at max. I felt emptiness without social media because there was nothing else to do after work and studies. Especially since there was covid and everything was closed. Not this time though. It's been over a month and I only use messenger and whatsapp to communicate with my friends and families. This time I stopped using social media gradually. I quit one app at a time and that was reducing my overall usage time without even me realising. I slowly found other ways to be productive such as reading books and I joined gym too. I enjoy them. I wish I had this sooner but at the same time it's better late than never. I wish all of you trying to quit become successful and see the life through different lenses.

Sabah Eternity ....True. Just one obvious example is by truly noticing people in public. They do not talk to each other. There is no way this should happen IF social media develops people into allegedly being more social. I am lucky I can compare this to 30 years ago due to my age. People used their free time in public (on a train to work, in line at a store, lunchroom cafeterias at large companies like banks or hospitals, at airport terminals etcetera.) There is no way people are talking to others more now the right way....face to face. You can learn so much more to judge others face to face. Here, a freak psychopath covered in tattoos smoking crack can participate in this so called conversation! I don't he/she would get many listeners face to face. You simply have way less ability to sift through comments and figure out the source! Perfect example.....who gets married dating someone for a year but never talking once face to face? I use this extreme example to help make my point. Nobody out of million people gets married like this. Yet look how people have flocked to what big businesses put in front of them. They think they are being "social"? Social media rewards idiots and freaks to vent here since they are those eerily weird acting people in public people stay away from.

Learning, playing, relaxing or even receiving news for me are all done through social media or the new media. My entire life is living on it. I could not imagine my life with out it. This video demonstrates why and how I could decrease my usage before getting hurt by it. Thank you so much.

I still have social media. I had thought about leaving it several times, but i think its a tool for you to stay connected with the world. However I only get on social media sometimes when i feel like i want to know what's going on in the world. sometimes I do end up comparing myself to others' highlight but I live my life mostly off social media, and this works for me. You dont have to get off social media completely, just find something that works for you.

I gave up Facebook, twitter,Instagram 6 months ago.Despite vociferous protests by my family,I also uninstalled WhatsApp.And guess what? I haven't missed a thing till now. People who love me still remember my birthday despite FB not reminding them. People who want to reach out call me instead of Whatsapping me. I do get those occasional pangs where I want to be on fb real bad. Instead, I meditate or go for a run or read a book or virtually do anything I wish to instead of snuggling up in bed typing away to glory on my phone. Give it up guys, give it up. I say that as an addict myself. You'll realize what you were into only when you give it up.

this video hit me on a deeper level, today starts my first day of my social media detox. i went to the gym today, and i left my phone in the car. I was able to fully focus on my workout, but i couldn't help but notice all the other cell phone zombies wondering around the gym, its almost as if people are afraid to be alone with their own thoughts, they need a distraction.

I have to tell this out there that this is one of the best talks i have heard from Ted on effects of social media and how to use it for yourself that makes you inspired and doesn't eat a big chunk of your day. For my case it was a chunk of day, my screentime for just Instagram was 7 hours a day and not a single scroll made me feel better.

i´ve been on and off social media for 3 years, it has given me anxiety, depression and stress and when I finally think I've learnt how to cop with it a major crisis appears. Like she said, I don't think quitting social media is the answer, because we are part of a generation that communicates through it, creates relationships and meets new opportunities. I have met a lot of amazing people thanks to social media, I´ve also been given the opportunity to work in amazing projects, I've found inspiration from a lot of people I wouldn't have known if it weren't for the internet. I'm really grateful for this speech, I find it quite illuminating when it comes to social safety awareness.

Whether we want it or not social media impacts our way of thinking and decisions. It is really important to have a detox from social media from time to time. I really liked this part of your speech: “In social media, we are the product, and we are letting others attribute value to us”.

Social media Top three diagnosis on university campuses 1- Anxiety 2- Depression 3- Stress Four stressors on social media 1- Highlight reel, all the time. 2- Social currency, “Economy of attention” but we’re the products. 3- F.O.M.O 4- Online Harassment “Micro moments over time become macro problem” Addiction* *Abstinence is not an option, but you can “practice safe social” Social media in neither good or bad! Dark side of people (not social media!) We need preventative strategies and coping strategies. 4 steps to social media wellness 1- Recognize the problem. As awareness is critical 2- Audit your social media diet 3- Create a better online experience 4- Model good behavior

Oh, I've noticed that a LOT with many of my "friends" or former schoolmates. I start questioning whether their online persona is their actual true selves, or if they are just putting up a mask for the others to see. But then I start questioning myself why I care so much, and why I still keep on following all these people even if I've barely had a straight conversation with them before. Social media really distorts our perception of others and ourselves. I'm trying to be less caught up in the online world, and only go on it for practical purposes.
