I'm with a few other comments here, if you've gone to the trouble of buying them,this really could have done with length, loft, lie and swingweight measurement comparisons. Either way, i think these irons along with the Kirkland's , Eleven driver etc show just how much we're being ripped off. A massive part of equipment cost is now covering marketing and player endorsements.
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
I am with you on the most part for your 2nd part of what you said. The 1st part I have to say that if it was essential that all the above needed to be identical then literally no reviews from any channel would be allowed to be published... The reason I do head data is to show that the delivery of say 2 compared clubs are as close as humanly possible. The shaft or setup of the club makes marginal difference to the physical ball when the delivery is matched. Manufacturers struggle at the best of times to give media, samples out to reviewers in any form of matching specs, let alone the preferential specs of the reviewer. Commonly it's, you get what you get and be grateful. So everyone has to do their utmost best with what they have and are given. I do try as best as I humanly can to ensure all my data is transparent and explained so any differences good or bad can be equated to a specific thing, rather than how most do, is review by feel and subjective conclusion. Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻
@GRIFF224 ай бұрын
@@AskGolfNut My comment wasn't a criticism, it was just more to say that if lofts were checked for example it wouldn't necessarily done to see if they matched the real P790 , just more casen if they were roughly similar or gapped with the rest of the set. Likewise with swingweight....do you get one iron that's D3 and then another that's C9 etc etc
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
@GRIFF22 point taken 👍🏻 the set swing weights fine by 'feel'. Yes that's a very subjective test, but I felt no difference in the Gap test running from 5 to 9 iron. I think as a whole the set are built fairly well... All the heads were weighted differently with the differing lengths of shafts (swing weighting) also the lengths were off by a quarter inch short but that's also negligible... I didn't notice much if any difference 👍🏻

If there are club manufacturers making good performance clubs that are similar to the more expensive clubs but at a far cheaper price, then that can only be a good thing for beginners. If and when people want to upgrade, then there is the more expensive clubs.
@AskGolfNut3 ай бұрын
Absolutely.... I really don't see the anger sometimes attributed to these types of irons as it allows people that were never going to be able to justify the larger spend on a 'real' set. Same argument for the Direct To Consumer brands... They aren't taking sales away from the big manufacturers, rather than giving another option to golfers that were otherwise looking at the 2nd hand market 👍🏻
@legend90184 ай бұрын
Good review. I do business with companies in china and I have some knowledge when it comes to products like this. Many companies produce many items in China for obvious reasons…mainly cost of manufacturing. However that does come at a price, there are little to no copyright protections in china, so when you turn over your design, specs, etc they are not protected. Items like your P790 irons are most likely the product of what is called a “ghost shift”. Let’s say the TM factory that produces the P790 irons is open from 8am-5pm (don’t quote me on that lol). When the day is done and the factory “closes” the ghost shift begins. This is where workers come in and make the irons you have in your hands using their own materials, paint, components etc. but using the TM molds. Often times these materials are less expensive and subsequently lower in quality. That is one issue. The other issue comes in quality control. Making sure that lofts, lies, swing weight, etc are all within manufacturer tolerances are not done thereby saving labor costs. The price is very tempting (for reasons stated) but you are definitely not getting the same quality of materials or quality control measures you get when buying a set from TM. That being said if you are a beginner and come across a set of knock offs that you like then it may be worth it. I will say there is more variability in quality when it comes to woods over irons. That may be worth a test as well. Keep up the good work 🏌🏻♂️.
@arisio74 ай бұрын
great point, I think saving money on buying these 'fakes', you can then go get their lofts and lies checked and fixed. if it were me, I would buy the club heads only and then put 'real' shafts and grips on them. you would still be saving at least 500-800 dollars. the test would be if the club heads would hold over time but still for 250 bucks, you take the risk. if the club heads fail, buy 'real' heads and you can still use your shafts and grips. just a thought 🤔

I also nipped the shaft down 1/2", per the fitting specs I received for my gamer set. Now, these P790's may go into my bag. Also, someone on here asked if the insert was rubbery or just a painted slot. The insert is actually rubbery, which backs up Jay's thought there is some "tech" in the Temu P790's.

What would be interesting... 1) Checking the swing weight difference. 2) The weights of the heads (with shafts removed). 3) Cutting one open would be mega interesting, potentially shocking as well. 4) How they perform on course in terms of durability (playing out of sand or bad lies, see if it ruins the coating). If you're looking to give away or sell these, I'd happily replace my Ping irons for a few months and play them and provide you some longer term feedback! "Calong" that makes these version of 790 started their business as OEM manufacturer for named brands for long time. Their own brand's forged wedges are sold in U.S Amazon currently, shaped just like Vokey. Like you felt, shafts' quality is not good as pricey shafts ( just same level as economy shafts of Wilson, Lazarus, Ram), but Heads and better version of their grips are quite impressive, even in Q.C wise. They still OEM-produce for Japanese forged heads... SO they are different from other Chinese fakers and their heads + KBS shafts will be cheaper, but great option for hi & mid handy players for long time usage. Very interesting. One of the biggest costs in manufacturing I would imagine is the forging process which would make it softer (but make it wear and have chatter also). The fakes sounded soft. Do you believe the fakes are also forged?

Awesome video. Did you happen to put the temu set on a loft and lie machine to see if there specs were consistent. Also if you do that, could you see if you can bend the 4 iron to adjust loft and lie?
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
Didn't attempt to bend them even though they say Forged 🤔🤔 I wouldn't assume they'll bend loads... They are all about 0.5 degree to a degree off what the P790s are (weaker). Absolutely nothing to consider in a test as most golfers deliver much larger loft discrepancies. I'm able also to match lofts in delivery within reason to compare directly 👍🏻

I'm just as shocked as you. But on the other hand, when I first started in golf I bought some custom made counterfeit Ping Eye 2 irons, and they were every bit as good as the Pings.
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
I think the main thing to take from this video for the golfers which may be considering these, is that the cost of these are right in the cheap 2nd hand sector and so for people concerned or manufacturers that may be concerned about these fakes that perform well, they were never going to justify the cost of spending 4 times the cost on new premium equipment. So in reality it's only the likes of ebay etc that may be losing out on any sales... This is a sample of 1 so I can't say, all will perform the same. But, as long as people know what they are doing then these and other like these are possible options 👍🏻

The 790 are 1 club shorter due to the 4* loft difference. I really like that they are more consistent, i get a few flyers with the callaways. The black Finnish is holding up really well too. Grips are better than taylormade or callaway original grips. Only con is the slow shipping.

They're built in the same factory. I buy Mulberry bags in Thailand, next to the factory that used to make them. Same craftsmen, same materials, same technology.
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
Interesting as I guess a bag is slightly easier to backwards engineer from a sample. These would take a little extra working out but one it's there then you can quite easily manufacturer them... My concern is for the tolerances on quality control. TM and alike are fairly tight with theirs, guessing a knock off factory have much lower limits to maximise output 🤷👍🏻
@lavrentievv4 ай бұрын
@@AskGolfNut Honestly, from the first shot you hit with them: that sounded as soft as a forged Miura Iron. Which the TM foam does to them. Also the toe shot forgiveness level would mean weight placement is almost identical, bar the shaft influence on dynamic loft: hence it would seem real tungsten in there. Just to machine the same tungsten shape/size would be an achievement that a small company could not do, unless it's sourced from the same manufacturer who creates the original p790s. Copying an MB or CB, even to forge isn't that difficult. But this seems to go above and beyond. I would be shocked at the engineering prowess of the Temu sellers if this is not made on the same production line as the originals.
@FunUnitCatKill4 ай бұрын
Would be interesting to see if there is tungsten inside, as well as maybe the metals used for the head. Could be good at the moment, but durability could be an issue in the long run.

@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
I don't think Taylormade are really going to be phased too much by all of this.... Generally speaking people that are looking to buy cluns in and around the £250 mark would never justify spending on new equipment from the premium manufacturers so would otherwise be looking on the 2nd hand market. 👍🏻

I am old fashioned so couldn’t bring myself to buy the Temu clubs, what disappoints me is TM went after Costco, do hear any chasing of TEMU, after all Temu is just Chinese amazon, so as a group you could sue, or have the clubs taken down. If we want R&D to continue, we have to pay for it. So my advice is, if you want cheap P790 buy Costco, TM think they are duplicates, and Costco has after sales service.

@atamagashock4 ай бұрын
Not surprised. All they did was reverse engineered the 2021 p790. Throw a bs shaft and grip, and sling them out. They do t have the millions of R&D cause they are just copying it. For someone that can’t afford 1500 for a set, seems like a great way to go. Especially since you could easily get whatever shafts you want and still save $800. But like you said TaylorMade has top notch service, no matter what the issue is. Friend just got a brand new qi10 driver sent out, br side he had an issue with his stealth. When I’m had my custom 790s built. They didn’t charge me for the grip change I made, even though it was $12 per grip more. For me I’ll pay for that service and piece of mind. But I’d also consider these for my son, since he’s growing still and also might not stick with the game

For the record, My family worked for Taylormade in Taiwan, and those good "fakes" started to appear back in early 2000s as minor defect diver heads etc made in china sneaked out of factories, eventually, the factory would sneakly made additional parts beyond the order from TM and sell them on the side, and the "fakers" will buy those parts and made club out of it. A lot of those company disregard IP and and use 3rd party company to cover up the process. It is a hit and miss, but you can get genuine TM but no serial parts in those fake clubs but potentially with bad coating, grind, shaft/grip and bad workmanship. Once they are done with contract, they might continue to make slightly different parts (club heads, etc) for the older club designs for those cheap clubs.

You compared the lengths and swing weights?
@AskGolfNut4 ай бұрын
Lengths were a quarter inch shorter (6mm which is nothing really). Swing weights although I didn't measure them directly, didn't feel anything different to the normal P790. My set were much closer in loft than yours which seems to suggest that there may be varied lofted sets... Mine were in and around 0.5 degrees to 1 degree different to that of standard P790. Lofts again are mainly just numbers as as long as there is consistent gapping which yours seem to be and the ones delivered to me were also, then they are doing their job. Worse case would be a remapping of carry distances but then again most golfers do that when they get a new set of different irons anyways 👍🏻

My theory is that the "fakes" are made at the same place as the "originals" but hey have blemishes, like the port missing on the lower clubs, and get thrown away in the process. Then some geeser working at the plant takes the "trash" home, put a shaft and a grip on it and sells it online. This can explaine the long shipping time. The faulty irons are rare because the production line is at a high level of quality so it takes time to collect a full set of "fakes". Thus I think these are disregarded original TM 790's, maybe even collectable.
