Ya know. I always found hibernation a big of an odd way to get through winter. Some animals grow more fur, some just move elsewhere. And then we have the ones that decide to just sleep it off. Sounds a little low effort almost if it didn't take a ton of preparation.

It makes sense when you think about it. Bears for example. Big creatures that use a lot of energy just by moving. Each movement they do has to be worth it and earn them more energy than they lose. Moving elsewhere would take days, be exhausting and leave no time for hunting. Just staying means food becomes more scarce and bears can starve. So, they go into a long sleep to lower their heart rate and bodily functions, needing less food, energy and everything for an extended period of time so they can live. Even if it’s not the best method, it keeps them alive and that’s all evolution is. Finding something that keeps the species alive and reproducing.

In fairness, it probably takes *more* preparation than just growing more fur. You have to make sure that you have enough food or fat stored up to keep yourself alive the whole time.
