Falcons Q7 Kit Speaker vs LS3/5a

Funny how some are negative about this classic British loudspeaker, what some international viewers outside of the UK (especially those in America) need to factor in is that the average British home and room size is very compact. Add in to that not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated listening room so this speaker works amazingly well in such rooms (also why they are hugely popular in places like Hong Kong).

Another factor is in UK they build houses mostly double brick. A lot in USA are frame and panel . Here In Western Australia most double brick with some frame and panel with out side brick wall. In the east a lot are panel. And yes the sound will be different. About 20 years ago I had a double brick house with a frame and panel smaller house in back garden. I found a dramatic difference.

Thanks for the video. Always wondered how they compared to the regular LS3/5a. I like my Q7 quite a bit and find them to be a very high value speaker in kit form.

Hello ! Big fan of what you’re doing, keep up the good work. It seems like Q7 were never intended to compete or replace the LS3. It appears they were meant to give you 90% of LS but with more bass and being more suitable for most types of music. It looks like they succeeded and that makes this speaker, in my opinion, a better option for a considerable less money. They look great, it appears they sound great and I love the fact that I can order a kit and put it all together myself.

To be fair, I just bought a pair of classic clone of Taiwan's branded LS3/5A(15 ohm version use with a 6" 80hz sub woofer) recently. The midrange are very sensitive according to the singing voice changes and it show that changes to your ear!) I recall I couldn't hear that kind of emotion in other same type of speaker!

Q7 is basically an enlarged version of 3/5a. I'm curious if there's a comparison diagram of the frequency responses for these 2 pairs of speakers. One more thing, what if the Q7 to be installed with the felt around the tweezer like 3/5a. That's what I want to consult with Jerry about this option.

A shockingly good loudspeaker with vast imaging qualities. There's nothing better at anywhere near the price for small to medium-sized rooms. Their only obvious weakness is their lack of deep bass and the bigger M40s do make up for that but they don't have that wonderful freedom of expression. Neither do 95% of all loudspeakers.

I have Spendor Classic 4/5 in my desktop rig. I listen to Jazz, EDM, & hip hop. I’m amazed at the spectrum that Spendor’s will handle. I’m interested in the Falcons….wondering if the Q7 would hold advantage in my set over Falcon GB LS3/5a? I wish I could demo both.
@dittonworks
@dittonworks Жыл бұрын
If the 4/5 are anything like my Classic 2/3’s then you’re enjoying a wonderful sound. The Falcon LS3/5a is just brilliant as is the Q7 but it’s the Ls3/5a for me 👌

We should treat the Q7 like harbeth p3esr, which is a off spring / revolution of the ls35a.

Even with the gold badge crossover (which I onwed and liked very much) the Q7 is much cheaper than the LS3/5A and provides the same build quality and listening pleasure. And from my personal experience there's no problem reselling the built Q7 for near new price. High value in my opinion.

I`m a bit confused. When i look at the Falcon website it states the Q7 is only available in `gold badge` version. So the LS3/5 Q7 in this video was the `silver` version?

Thanks for confirming! Are you by chance familiar with a set of speakers by Falcon/Malcolm Jones known as the Tabor model that use 8” Audax bextrene woofers that look similar to those in the Q7? If you have heard those, I would be very interested in your impressions and comparison thoughts. They are about the size of Spendor 2/3s or Mission 770. About 12x12x24 inches.

I just don't think anything can quite replace the heritage and indeed the legend of the LS3/5A. It is a magical speaker with a stunning pedigree. Are there better speakers out there? Yes, dozens. But none of them will ever sound exactly like a properly in-spec LS3/5A. I'm sure the Q7s do a fantastic job, but they would trouble me as being a "close but no cigar" design. Great vid again mate.

I've had both versions and actually preferred the regular crossover as it was livelier sounding. The GB is smoother and more refined through. Couldn't really go wrong with either but if budget is a concern get the base version.

I disagree with you about the KEF 101 sounding "dead and lifeless" compared to the LS3/5A. I found the the 101 to be the better speaker on all counts. Midrange is quite clear yet lower in coloration, bass definitely is more tuneful and accurate. A larger box means better extension without the artifical120hz boost the LS3/5A uses to fake it's bass. Highs have better immediacy... the tweeter sits naked without the perforated screen on the LS3/5A. The 101 handles power better, goes louder and just sounds more dynamic. Overall... the 101 is the better speaker objectively, and in my opinion, subjectively.

That’s absolutely fine, your quite welcome to hold an opinion on the 101’s, I actually liked my pair but, I felt they lacked soul. Certainly not a bad speaker
