Falconry Diary | Successful hunt with Venom the Harris Hawk

We're back out again today with Venom my 20 year old Harris hawk. This time for a successful hunt and some lovely flying.
There are scenes of hunting (though not gory for those on the gentle side).

Ahh, the natural way of hunting… before gunpowder. Falconry is older than guns. Plus you don’t have to worry about cleaning the shot from the kill. You only have to be fast enough to separate the raptor from it’s kill to get a pristine lunch. Not forgetting to have separate feed for the hawk. I once had lunch from falcon caught game. The catch was pristine.

Venom is a beautiful Harris hawk. Here in Arizona they are plentiful. Now and then we get to see them stack up on top of a cactus. I very much enjoy your videos.

I had similar experience, but it was with an Eurasian Eagle Owl. It walked up my arm, leant against me and shut its eyes.

What a handsome boy! For a long time, my plan when I grew up was to be a Harris' Hawk. I grew up in southern Arizona in Harris' Hawk range. I handled a captive Harris' Hawk for an educational program there, and have always been fascinated by these awesome birds.

awesome little vid. I'm training my first Harris's this year. Always been worried about having an HH here in Western Canada as our winters can drop to -40 but this year I was looking for another Redtail when a breeder friend I new called with a hen for me to think about. We took her and now trying to get her trained between snow storms. It might be a bit late for getting her going this year perhaps hare in the spring. But in the mean time I am enjoying watching what others are doing with their birds. I'm hoping to hunt mostly from the fist as I just enjoy having that contact but we'll what works best for her.
