A falconry technique called lure flying helps encourage an aggressive flight style among the falcon. The falcon chases the lure as if it were its prey, as the falconer swings the lure just out of the falcon's grasp. This technique is as old as falconry itself, and has many applications in falconry. You will often see this display at falconry demonstrations/renaissance fairs, and falconers use lure flying to improve the physical fitness of their birds in preparation for hunting. It is also use in something called falconry-based bird abatement: Preventing crop damage caused by nuisance birds using trained birds of prey. The falcon is the natural predator to the nuisance birds that decimate the fruit crops. During the summer months my job entails flying my falcons over vineyards to protect the grapes from starlings, magpies, robins, etc. This is a video of me and my male gyrfalcon on the job, lure flying just before sunset - a very active time of night for the nuisance birds.
