In this falconry video, I discuss the use and purpose of lures in falconry, lure flying, and suggest a different highly effective way to utilize lures in falconry.
The lure, regardless of design, is a vital piece of falconry equipment. Whether used for training and conditioning, retrieval, hunt training or getting a bird to fly up to a drone, the use and understanding of this piece of equipment is crucial to most forms of falconry.
I will have a later video showing different lure designs. But if you want to watch a video I made on how to make a leather lure, you can find it here:

Great video. I've seen meat tied to lures go wrong so many times I've gotten to where I never garnish my lure. For lure training the first session or two I use a live pigeon. Then for a few sessions I use a dead pigeon, then a leather lure with dried pigeon wings (no garnish) and stick with that indefinitely.

Thank you, so much Ben, for your knowledge and expertise!!! I love your training tips, based on behavior, around the lure!! I'm told, the wildlife cntr, where I volunteer, will soon begin flying the Harris Hawks, again. I am anxious to see if I can try some of your suggestions.

Hey Ben!!! I love your videos so much, and I've drawn your golden eagle that you have as your profile picture. Your videos are all so informative, and for the first time I am coming from North Carolina to Utah (salt lake city) to see the Skinwalker Ranch cast! I was wandering if you have any ideas or places that could be good for seeing peregrine nests? Much love! Shepherd

Ben how do you then build up passes for lanners so they are not just getting lure on the first attack. My lanner will just fly up into a tree?

Do you have any advice on how to get a raptor to stop carrying the food off? I had a red-tail (mature female) who suddenly tried to carry food off

Would you consider doing a video (or videos) on hacking? Wild hacking vs tame hacking, when to use each, the benefits, that kind of thing. There's very little good information on the Internet about it, and I've seen falconers make grand statements like how they won't fly a large falcon that hasn't been hacked for at least six weeks (or similar) and it would be nice to have more than a vague idea of what they're talking about

What about live lures like pigeons, mice, and rabbits? A more natural approach.

I know this is slightly off topic but it does have to do with food. Every time I go to the raptor encounters where they let you fly a raptor to the fist and feed them a few times, they always use a Harris hawk. Is there a reason for this? I know you've spoken about not flying to the fist too much with food or you will experience aggression the next season. How do they avoid this with their hawks being that they are always using the same one to fly with groups of people? As soon as I can devote the time to it, I will get my license. You provide so much info to someone like me before I jump in. Really appreciated.

Great video Ben. Lure training is my downfall when it comes to training my Aplo to the lure. Every hawk that I've trained to the lure, would just hammer the lure after a few training sessions. My Aplo flutters to the lure and lands a couple feet away from it then walks to it to feed. Any thoughts on rather this is normal?

The aggression of raptor towards it's quarry such as myna or dove or whatever quarry is that aggression is good or not because my opinion is that I want quarry from my hawk if my hawk is not aggressive to quarry then it will leave chasing for some distance or not chasing quarry more interestingly and energetically then what should we do to make our bird more aggressive or consontrative to its quarry

I live in North Carolina and I am still having trouble finding a mentor to become a falconer. Since the age of technology is it all all possible to do some of my training remote over web meetings. I am a very experienced parrot trainer, an ecologist, a wildlife rehabber. The only form of hunting I am interested in is archery and falconry because of the art and history. I have made inroads but not being a good ole boy has been an issue for this enthusiast Gal. Do you have advice???? Thanks in advance.
