I live in a high rise in downtown Kansas City and we have had peregrine falcon nesting here for years. One day I was drinking my coffee and looking outside at some pigeons. Suddenly, one of the pigeons just exploded, leaving a puff of feathers floating down. I caught sight of a falcon flying off with a motionless bird in its talons. I keep watching to see if I can catch that again.

We have these in Maine and on 2 occasions I have been able be around very close when these birds have hit pigeon. One time I was cleaning my car out in Windsor Maine running a vacuum and it sounded like a tree branch broke above me to I turned it off turned around and there were feathers floating in the air like snow.....and I then I noticed the dead bird.....the falcon landed and made noises at me so I went inside so it could eat in peace.....super impressive for me. 2 time I was inside my house about 6:30 am at my dresser and it sounded like something hit my house or something downstairs felt over....I felt the impact a little kinda jumped me.....10 mins later I went to start my car in the driveway and when I open the door there was feathers all over the front yard....I lived in town Augusta Maine at this point and had never seen a falcon in town like this before but clear as day it was in the red maple on the far side of my drive way making the same noise....then I noticed the pigeon on top of the van no head and a bunch of feathers stuck to the side of my house where my bedroom is....moral of the story is don't wear a hat that looks like a pigeon around these because if they mistake it for a real bird you are done....I will never forget the sound each time I heard these impacts its actually scary. Such a small animal too.....I would rather deal with a black bear lol

They aren't the fastest flyers, they are the fastest fallers after flying very high. There are definitely birds that fly faster. In fact even a Pigeon can fly faster than a Peregrin Falcon. I'm always amazed to see and hear these birds zipping by my balcony here in the city (Toronto). Strange to have such an extreme creature in an urban setting.

How about checking out the Pueo, or the Hawaiian Owl? They're one of only two birds of prey native to the islands and were considered family guardian spirits for the native people.

Real people of culture knew all this about the Peregrine Falcon because we read the Animorphs books.
