This falconry video is part one in teaching the principles and techniques to properly raise in imprint raptor. Improper imprinting can result in aggression or excessive vocalizing. This video shares techniques to properly raise imprint falcons, hawks and eagles.
There will be additional videos covering other facets of the subject of imprints. But this video covers some of the most important and basic principles.
Imprint accipiters in particular are extremely dangerous if not trained properly. This video series aims to help teach proper training and prevent aggression.

Some real nuggets of info in there! So many don’t have the self control to keep the lure meaning insurance policy ; short change the hawk once or twice and it’s lost it’s magnetic powers forever!

Well I have found today what I think is a baby redtail hawk that can’t fly in my gravel parking lot. I have no idea where it came from. Seems to not to be able to fly as I captured him with gloved hands . Looks like a little puff ball with some feathers. Almost blended in with the gravel, I was worried about it getting ran over. So here I am on your page and absolutely amazed at what these birds of prey or capable of and their intelligence. I have worked around military working dogs and these creatures are just as amazing. Your videos are very helpful in trying to help this little on out. Thanks for your time and effort in putting these videos out.

Awesome video Iv been watching u for awhile now and u helped in your other videos before I got my Lanner falcon i got her at 2 weeks old and now she is 8 weeks old now 9 on Sunday and the time has gone so fast she is amazing and I love her to bits.. I find it unbelievable how fast they pick stuff up and then it just becomes second nature to them it tuck me about a week to get her to jump to the glove step to the glove now it’s bang hand there she’s on it steps on flys to she’s at the stage now she’s just started flying to the lure as I drop it to the floor and she dose it that thing haha.. I find my self sat there for hours on the glove just looking and talking to her and even when I bed her down i sit talk to her stroke her and wait until she goes on one leg and eyes start to shut and then I will leav her but it’s such an experience and I love every minute I get with her .. and thank you for all the tip and tricks u put out for people like us 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽 keep it up and il look forward to the next video..

Difficult subject, imprinting when done well, ideally with tame hacking to reduce some of the negatives is one thing. But too many seem to see imprinting as a lazy option to avoid manning and the belief that the imprint falcon is less likely to roam. Not sure I see the difference/advantages between a well manned PR longwing and an imprint, especially after a couple of seasons. But the PR still has natural behaviour and can socialize with other members of its own species. Some species like smaller accipiters massively benefit from imprinting. With falcons I am not so sure

KZbin. Where you can learn to scuba, skydive and be a falconer all in the same day without mentors teachers or consequences. So tomorrow I could ..... descend to 120 ft 2 times, get on a plane fly to the rockies and be parachuting and "falconing" the same day. Yep. Thats my plan. So its fair for me to say I'm gonna be a falconer and your content has really helped me ! Keep it coming. I don't need certifications or 2 yrs of training .... youtube is awesome ! Hope my scuba and flight to Denver in the same day goes well !

Peale's x prairie. Highly recommended if you want a ton of aggression. You won't be disappointed. My current little guy started chasing immediately when I cut him loose. Was supposed to be learning to lure fly to build muscle first but he had other ideas. Three years on he is fast on the lure but will stay up as long as I let him. Mount stoop chase repeat until called. Not for beginners! You need to have a complete understanding of how to redirect aggression and I recommend you be able to fly minimum 4 days a week! Conditioning is insanely important!

Ben excellent video again my only comment is that l don’t think all eagle or accipiters aggression is due to imprinting. In my experience it’s lack of the hawk to experience real and often hunting opportunities at abundantly wild game. We imprinted 2 eagles year after year. Eagle number 1 lots of rabbits no problems eagles number 2 next year myxomatosis in the rabbits was so dangerous we had to stop flying route cause no quarry. Kind regards Rab

Yes aggression can manifest for a lot of reasons. And I 100% agree that especially with eagles and accipiters, lack of hunting leads to aggression manifesting in the wrong ways. I always tell people if they have a hand me down goshawk or Cooper’s and ask for what technique can stop the aggression, my first thing is always “hunt hunt hunt!!!” Even with all the little new ones to techniques that are important and make a difference, the best way to smooth out an aggressive bird is through constant hunting.

How’s your Gyrkin doing? My experiences with imprinting is a bitter sweet adventure. Done right I hear they can be silent, but my imprints are part of the reason I’ve got permanent hearing loss in the left side! 😂 I found mine dead silent until I put them out to weather in the yard or mews! How does a human avoid becoming the target of their aggression and vocalizations? Especially in falcons?

Agreed. I am looking forward to viewing the whole encompassing lanner video. The hierofalco subgenus is a monophyletic phylogroup that includes lanners, and many falcon species diverged from the lanner falcon over 200,000 years ago in northern africa.

i noticed that you used the word 'sp*stic' in this video.... just letting you know that it's an ableist slur
@benwoodrufffalconry
@benwoodrufffalconry Жыл бұрын
I have never heard anyone mention spastic as being a slur, nor was my usage meant as a slur, by the accurate description of extremely fast and reactive muscle movements too fast for a neurotypical human brain to properly perceive, since we have a far slower frame rate. If you are referring to its other usage describing seizures, I take exception to you claiming I am trying to use a slur, as my severely non verbal autistic son has seizures, all day and night every day and every night, which often requires me holding him tightly while the seizure runs its course so that he doesn’t accidentally harm himself during the seizures. If you watch my videos, you may have noticed the giant scars and gouged out flesh on my face. These are from the times I hold my son and help him through his seizures. I don’t know if you yourself have epilepsy. Perhaps you do and perhaps that is why the word seemed to strike a sensitive chord with you. But as a parent of a child with epilepsy who daily gets wounded in the act of helping my child, I find NO malice in the word being used accurately. If someone said “Ben your son was totally spastic while he was having that seizure” the intent and usage matter. Clinically speaking, he WAS spastic, meaning his muscles were firing against the will of his mind. But if a person said it meaning he was “just a crazy kid and was spastic” then YES that is a slur. My son’s neurologist literally uses the word “spastic” constantly and accurately when discussing what the nature of my sons seizures have been like this month. Now separate from that, the term “spastic” is also used in biology (which I am a biologist) and is a term used as I already said, the describe jerky reactive muscle movements of an animal who moves and processes at a gram rate faster than humans do or humans perceive, and is referring to reactive or decided movements, not the involuntary movements of seizures. A proper biological term in no way related to seizures, mental health, or slurs. A phrase can be used in more than one way by more than one group. I’ve listed three for “spastic” -clinical usage describing involuntary muscle movements of seizures -wildlife biologist term referring to conscious reactive muscle responses faster than the human frame rate (which was the use in my video) -human slurs derived from the clinical epileptic origin, but shared in a derogatory meaning with malice. Which was not at all what my usage was. Same goes for many terms. The term retard means slow, and is not solely a human term. Firefighters use flame “retardants”. One of my best friends has a son with Down syndrome and in the hospital it is still a clinical term simply meaning developmentally slow compared to cognitive abilities of a similar aged human with neurotypical processing. But in society, terrible people used a medical term as a way to mock and scorn. And so now we don’t use that term outside of the hospital because people turned a non offensive medical term into a generous slur. Even to my ears if I hear the phrase “retarded” I too only hear bullies at my school mocking people. This can happen with any term. During the Cold War, calling someone a communist was an intentional slur. Now have of Americans proudly tout that their views are very socialist and very communist. There is a move in America to constantly soften language and be offended preemptively by everyone and everything. My son is not “spastic” in the slur sense. But clinically he does have spastic seizures. And from the wildlife biology term usage, accipiters are indeed “spastic” to the human mind, in a way that has no relation to humans, no relation to seizures, and no malice or relation to cultural slurs. But I appreciate you bringing up your concerns. I am not going to stop using a proper term in a non slur way. But I will work hard in future videos to try to make sure I do not use such a term in a casual enough way that it can be misinterpreted or misread as a slur or as anything relating to seizures or neurodivergent minds. I appreciate your input.
