Fall bottom fishing at its best! Then kayak fishing at its worst! Long Island Sound seabass/tautog

What an eventful morning this was...an incredible sea bass bite as soon as we arrived, some big blackfish (tautog) when we were able to get through the sea bass, and then my dad flips his kayak while we are anchored about a mile off the beach in 61F water. This trip had it all! Very thankful my dad was able to get back in his kayak but it really could have been a different ending if he wasn't able to.

I know when I was researching kayak fishing I looked for all types of things around flipping and what to do. This type of video with some additional commentary around what went right, what went wrong, etc would probably be very helpful even for those not focused on the fishing aspect.

Way to go on finding it for that price! I paid 700$ in 2019 for the 2014 hobie sport, lol. You really got a good deal, the compass is a great hull design and once you get that 180 drive in there you’ll be maneuvering around with ease! Happy to hear you checking out the videos, one of the upgrades I’ve also done and didn’t make a video on is the seat risers and I do like them, just make sure you get comfortable on the stability first

Thanks, don't get too discouraged about it, after all we are really taking these kayaks to their limits. Staying closer to shore and out of strong currents is much safer. But I did want to post this as a reminder of the real dangers that are always there when going out. 🤙

I use dry suite anytime water temp+air temp is 120 or less. It takes just couple min to get stiff and drown. Lucky save. As a general rule whoever can’t make it back into flipped kayak by him/herself or easily swim back to shore should consider not to do it. While dry suite is expensive it saves life. Everything should be tied relatively tight to kayak - to flip all the gear and kayak back may be really annoying as opposed to just small kayak (also pretend all loose gear is gone). Another rule - I do not elevate seats - you have to keep your center of gravity low- yes it might be more difficult to fish but also more difficult to fall out… also - once you get more experience - keep situational awareness high at all times…

I completely agree on all accounts...but even that 120 rule should have some caveats, if water temp is 55 and air temp is 70 I'm still wearing a drysuit. Your so right about tying everything tight, that made flipping it back over tough. Also the kayak was filled with about 3 gallons of water when we got back which tells me you don't have too much time to get it right side up, everything should be done as quick as possible

In this case it was good though because my dad could grab my brothers kayak quickly. Yeah he just leaned too much got comfortable, his seat was elevated a little and its true the passports are not the most stable hobies, an outrigger would have been clutch

don't ask if he's cold. 61 degrees. looks like he's in his 50's-60's. he can hardly talk and he is cold. do not let go of his boat. do not have him out of his life jacket unless you have an immediate need to get him out of the clothes underneath it. almost no chance he gets back in the boat without a pfd if he ends up in th water again. it gives you something to hold onto, gives him buoyancy, it's vital in a rescue. humans are slippery when wet. get him in as warm and dry of a jacket and shell situation as you can and get him back to shore asap. i would carry a tow rope if i was ever out this far with novices, probably even with experienced paddlers.

@@williamgraf2566 center island reef is an interesting place. There’s so many nice looking boulders out there you would think it would be amazing for blackfish. For some reason though I’ve never got into a hot bite there, I think it has to do with the boulders being more spread out. There’s def blackfish in the shallows where the boulders are exposed at low tide and then yes I do have a deeper area over there that I’ve had some success but it’s never been lock and load fishing there for me. Tightly packed boulders even if theyr small hold the numbers of fish

Hey Tom, hope your doing well out there this season. The cord is a dive reel I got on amazon: amzn.to/3fncCSs its pretty strong and thin diameter helps with the drag in the deeper water I think. I then have some thicker rope and chain near the anchor of course, and once I feel I'm over the spot or just slightly ahead I clip that reel to a floating line and bottle for the minor adjustments.

Hey Peter I intended to write this when the thing happened but I forgot, so now i remembered so i just wanted to say that the way that your dad fell out of the kayak was probably NOT the way this accident happens from watching a bunch of vids where people capsize this is the only one so usually there is rough water or the person is leaning to the side in front of them BUT here your dad was kinda just relaxing and reclined back casually, not realizing that he was about to relax a little bit too much and then oops what happened see what I'm saying in every other situation the fisherman has some idea that things are getting sketchy and they are aware that there is a possibility of a capsize so really , in case you have not already figured this out my advice would be just to watch that one cannot recline in a kayak unless it is straight backward never to the side hey here is something I wanted to ask do you guys have a house with access right on the water or do you have to haul the kayak on a car just to follow up from what we said the other day I am really thinking that I will decide to move to the Northport area instead of the Riverhead area I know I wanted to be close to the jetty at Shinnecock but I am now thinking that I will sacrifice that surf fishing for the MUCH More productive kayak / boat fishing in Northport hey if I do chose your area could you give me the heads up on which neighborhoods I should avoid considering because they are known for a high rate of burgleries if you happen to have an opinion and knowledge of that danger thank you sir

Hey Steve, your observation is correct, you really cant lean to the side on a kayak. This just comes with experience, the more you go on a kayak the more you will learn the stability and limits. I think my dad just didn't have much time out on the kayak prior to this happening, it was calm, he got too comfortable, and before you know it it was too late for him to re-balance himself. both myself and my parents have access rights to the water. I have access rights to the bay by my house and my parents (who live further out east) have access rights to the sound. This is a blessing and it makes getting out on the water much easier. I really dont think you need to worry about burglaries much on the northshore. It will be a much better neighborhood in terms of crime than queens

Peter so tI am glad we both see what happened to your dad in the same way , he definately should go out again with you knowing that he simply must never relax to the side , only backwards and frontwards yes you are blessed to have such great water rights maybe i will too so let me ask you this since you mentioned that your parents live out east could you tell me about which town / area and how you would compare the fishing out there to the fishing in the Northport area I might re,re consider and decide to go further east if you think that the fishing is better out there I am going to guess that you do better in Northport you tell me and here is the deal on the crime / burglary thing so for the last SEVERAL years I have been looking at the North shore from Northport all the way to the North Fork and on the south shore from Moriches to Shinnecock and I have learned that of course any of those dozens of towns are much safer than Queens still if and when I type in the search " crime in ( fill in the town) it always shows me how some parts are definitely considered safer ( less crime) than other within the same town so I fin d that knowledge very helpful in guiding me but I thought by asking a real person (you) I would gain even more knowledge than having to rely 100% on the crime stats which by the way makes me want to ask you how about the town in which your folks reside I know you are going to say that it is safer than Queens lol,,,,, BUT if you thought about it, would you be able to say well maybe stay away from this or that particular area, like for example when I do the research on the Northport area,, there are a few sections which according to the Crime stats one would be wise to NOT buy a house there I very much appreciate you taking the time to help me in my quest to find the right place to move to and I know I am pumping you for info, but you are the only real person I know who actually might know more than the computer's stats I thank you in advance @@PeterRanieriII

@@stevetautog880 lol. I worries I’ll try to help as much I can. My parents are between port Jeff and mattituck. I consider it the middle basin of the Long Island sound. I think the fishing is better there than in the western sound especially as it relates to biggger fish. I still think the more east you go the better it is in general but for sure there are times when the western sound is more lively than the middle sound region. In terms of the crime, it’s pretty safe all along the north shore. The further east and further north the better I think. Criminals need a quick route of escape so towns close to the expressway get robbed more often than towns far up into the peninsulas of the north shore close to the water. At least that’s my experience. Manhasset for example has been having some issues with burglars recently as opposed to port Washington which hasn’t seen the same. These towns are right next to each other but manhasset is closer to the highway.

@@PeterRanieriII I have a 2 piece, level six pants n a level six Juneau jacket. I’d recommend the pants but not the jacket, the traditional dry top would be better. Full suit is the best but I get way more use from the 2 piece. Also you’re quest for deep structure and sea bass out in the sound is pretty cool, happy to see you’ve found some good pieces. I tried a bunch a few years back and didn’t find a whole lot of great structure

Ive always wondered about the 2 piece system, you find it easier to use because you can cool off easier, so more likely to wear it? Is it tight around your waist though? Yea man, I'm glad you can appreciate how difficult it is to find less fished pieces in the Sound, especially from the kayak. That 1st year I started really exploring my success rate was like 15% - theres a lot of broken down wrecks that dont hold anything anymore but also don't be afraid to go back to pieces that seemed dead, as long as there is some kind of relief there could be fish on them at different times of the year

It really was a true honey hole, crazy how the big ones just kept coming in. Yep, thats so true, panicking would've just made everything worse. It is a real fear, the open water deserves much respect. Thanks and I can't wait either!

one of the keys to stability in a kayak is contact between the paddler and the boat. in a touring boat you have your feet on the foot pedals, thighs in the thigh braces, and back on the backrest. 3 points of contact. in a whitewater boat you're basically encapsulated. total contact. your hips do the talking. all of it. in a fishing kayak we're very limited on the contact we can maintain with the boat. your dad had very little contact with the boat, therefor very little stability. the water is flat. he's the unstable one. there's a chance he would fall right out of the boat if he didnt' grab on to the seat. glad everybody is ok. good practice for when it happens in the chop. seven years guiding in touring kayaks, back when the boats were all fast and inherently unstable.

Wow I never thought they were that unstable that was a very critical situation if you were out there by yourself you would've been dead people should really think twice about kayaking offshore and in Coldwater's

Hey RR, thank you ! Yea I guess it depends where you are how far you have to go to find bigger ones. I’ve found at least in the sound that as long as you get into around 60’ or more you get can get some big ones but the most important part is finding the less known pieces of structure that haven’t been picked off.

Hey Bob! You and me both, whew that was a close one, and that’s actually a great idea, an added layer of warmth and protection. I like that idea a lot. He does! The total time in the water was 5.5min. He stayed calm as well which helped a lot

This reminded me of going in 50 degree 50' deep water under the Garden State Parkway in Great Egg Harbor. I got lucky my kayak didn't flip cause my fishing buddy didn't see it happen and I wouldn't have been able to right it myself. Seeing how hard it was for you guys to get it upright again was another wake up call that I probably needed right before NJ Tog season. Thanks for sharing this. It might save a life. Also: A Big thumbs up for the Old town Lure Angler PFD from someone who knows firsthand. It popped me up instantly and made it easy to get back on even in deep water. It's expensive but I can bear to wear it all summer and I hate the heat.

Wow Dan I'm glad you made it ok, 50 degree water is cold! Im glad it didnt flip, i think its a good idea to have a short rope tied to the side of the kayak in the event it flips you can grab the rope and pull which could help rotate it back over. I'm for sure looking at that pfd, I have to say I'm ok with the one I have now but do like the look of that one, especially with the high back so you can sit against the seat properly. Maybe I should put it on the holiday wish list, lol

@@PeterRanieriII Well I made a split decision to jump as it was going over because I knew I wouldn't get it back over. I have a homemade helm mounted trolling motor on a Lifetime Teton Pro Angler with a big old lead battery. Yeah the High back is great, especially when you have frame chairs up on PVC risers. I have the same setup as the boat that flipped. The PFD is so comfortable that I even wear it as a fishing vest when I'm fishing from land. Definitely highly recommended. Leave the holiday wish list where mom/girlfriend/wife will find it and you'll get it...actually, in your case, leave it where Dad will find it, lol. Glad you rescued him! LOL

By this time of year, we've put the kayaks away for the winter. I'm glad your dad was able to get out of that situation safely. While the seabass bite has been red-hot, I think I'm done going out on the boat for the year. The fall squid run is also in full swing right now as they migrate back down south. You can catch them right off the dock in broad daylight.

Thanks Josh, it has been a better than usual season for black seabass I think, at least around us, even in the western sound and shallow I was catching them a few weeks ago which I usually don’t. Been seeing the bright lights at the local docks near where I live so I k ow the squid are around here too. Would love to do that one night, it’s been a while. Even during the day you can get them?!

@@PeterRanieriII The dock I used to go to always had squid fishers at night, but I've seen some guys on KZbin catching them during the day too. I don't go there anymore, as with most places, people with no regard for others have repeatedly trashed the place, and it's a hotspot for people taking undersized and/or too many fish.
