@PeterRanieriII actually I subscribed yesterday to your channel, I saw a couple of your tutorials and one of a fishing trip and noticed that you have more DIY solutions in your kayak that I would like to see how you solved them. One of those is the couple of external batteries added to your GoPro in front of you...are you helping the connectors with something to made ther waterproof or at least weatherproof?
@PeterRanieriII9 күн бұрын
@@araldf a great observation, yes I have tried to make the battery a little bit weatherproof by greasing all the connections with lubriplate 105 grease and then i wrapped the battery in a bungie to keep it secure but also loop the wire down so any water might drip away. its really not a perfect setup though I have had to buy at least a new battery every season as I get caught in the rain or the swell is just too much and it splashes the battery it will die but they are cheap enough these days only $20 and its worth it to me to have continuous video running on my trips.

Hey what size anchor/ weight do you use for the kayak ?
@PeterRanieriII18 күн бұрын
the sinker size? i think on this trip I used 3-4oz. and in the western sound I rarely need to go more than that unless I fish a rip area in a strong tide.

Sorry I meant the anchor you use for your kayak to stay on boulders, what weight anchor ⚓️
@PeterRanieriII17 күн бұрын
@@Waterboy516ohh I’m actually using spot lock on this kayak now so no more conventional anchor. But when I was using a conventional anchor I would use both a 5lb grapple and a 5lb plate or brick tied together and that workes pretty well

Great test, we're in the FL Keys fishing right now but hail from NJ. Down here we use the flouro leader along with braid to feel the fish and not have them see the line but when we used to go for big fish like sharks we'd always use mono for when they'd wrap around a bridge piling or go under some structure. The mono was tough stuff compared to any braid or flouro.
@PeterRanieriII18 күн бұрын
Thanks and thats great to hear your experience is in line with mine. I think I'm with you in super clear water the fluoro may help the line shy fish but up against really sharp and rough structures mono is the way to go 💪

Is your cart the hobie trax 2 or the 2-30 one with the bigger wheels? And also do you think the trax 2 with smaller wheels would still do the job helping with the kayak reverse? I love your videos thanks
@PeterRanieriIIАй бұрын
@@longislandfish2457 this is the 2-30 larger wheel cart I know it’s crazy expensive but I had messed with many other version of wheels and these just seem to be worth it especially if trekking over sand. I actually don’t think the smaller wheel one would have the same buoyancy as this one and keep the kayak floating like it does with these. I say that because my friend Dan has the smaller ones and he’s able to push them under his kayak into the scuppers while the kayak is floating pretty easy when we get back to landing and I can’t do that at all
@longislandfish2457Ай бұрын
@ thank you Peter. Now here is somenthing else I wanted to ask you. I have an outback same model as your first kayak(the blue one) and I want upgrade my seat with an Ascend seat. There’s a bunch of videos on youtube of people doing it, would that affect my balance on the water being that much higher you think? Thanks again
@PeterRanieriII29 күн бұрын
of course, and that is also a great question. I just took a look at that seat and it doesnt look too high, I think if you have good balance and are comfortable in the kayak its not going to affect the stability. But its a great question because when i did a seat riser upgrade to the passport it likely was part of the reason my dad flipped as his balance isn't as good and he doesn't have the same experience of being on a kayak a lot. So my advice would be to try it but test it out in a safer environment the first couple trips and see if its affecting your stability.

@PeterRanieriIIАй бұрын
haha thanks, I can get by when it comes to seafood but I'm by no means any sort of cook lol - heck yea cooking them whole is def a great way to do these fish, nice keepers! I usually will cook seabass whole on the day I get them and then filet and freeze in vaccuum seal the rest. And yes I always bleed any fish I plan to eat. It makes a difference, even with the less bloody fish, you're going to get a better meat, I think it stores longer without the blood too, plus it seems a bit more humane to kill the fish quicker

I figured I’m going to hopefully get my boat running again next season. my spare rods I let people use are very old and stiff …. I might as well give friends/ family a better experience.

Great video. Again you are playing with your drag after a fish hits. When you are reeling it from the bottom, fish takes the jig, and you never set the hook, instead you loosen your drag on it and lost the fish. Set it and forget it. If you have like 15lb line, set it at 7lb and is good enough for the trip. Kudos on releasing that striper!
@PeterRanieriIIАй бұрын
Im loosening after I set the hook to reduce chance the hook pulls. not fishing heavy structure like from shore on a kayak you get more freedom to do this. if you notice on the striper i didnt touch it once. just my opinion but you should adjust drag based on the fish and your surroundings. set and forget it is oversimplifying

Great video Peter, I need some advice/tips to void ruining my next trip. I fished the Western sound Nov/15th (breezy day, N/W winds) in my usual "hot spot" - a very rocky/huge boulder shoreline in about 9 to 15 feet of water (starting at high tide). I caught 1 baby blackfish. On Nov/3rd, same spot, all big blackfish. Are the fish all moving deeper? what depth and type of structure would you recommend so I can bring home some dinner next time around (before end of November). Many thanks - Gio, Western Long Island Sound.
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
Gio, I had very similar experience today fishing western sound Ny side. I even pushed into the 30’ range with spread out boulders and very few fish. The 2 wrecks I fished today in 45-60’ had much better action. I really think it’s very much area specific but if there isn’t heavy structure of tightly packed boulders then it’s hard to find them it seems in the shallower stuff. I would def go to wrecks or tightly packed boulders now, the forage type areas are done. Just my limited experience though still trying to figure them out like you!

Hi Peter, Western Sound person here out of Norwalk. Why do you cut off the legs of the crabs? I'd think with them on the presentation would be more natural.
@PeterRanieriII2 ай бұрын
Hey keith, I just prefer legs off in the western sound as I feel the smaller fish can grab them and not be close to the hook, its also provides a nice hole to thread the hook when you cut them off. In the eastern sound where they could be bigger more aggressive fish, keeping legs on is probably fine
