Removing 3 or odd number of magnets will cause uneven braking. But it may not matter that much. It's worth testing on the next fishing trip. Another youtuber has a casting distance video. In an attempt to quantify how much distance is actually lost with the over braking. His test was a bit consistent. But the Kestrel lost by at least 10 feet to the Aldebaran and a static brake reel.

What does uneven braking Mean tho? Magtrax braking is not always magnets around the entire brakes and it seems fine? Also people have removed all magnets one side and they says it seems to work well. 10 ft is a good chunk.

RaWr brother I got my first BFS setup recently. And you were the one that really inspired me to explore the world of BFS. The rod I bought was a 7 foot Shimano Sensilite Light action fast tip and the Zephyr. I figured this would make for a decent first setup. I hope like crazy that I like crappie fishing with it at least half as much as you like BFS.

Sweet! I am at heart a crappie fisherman. I enjoy crappie fishing more than large mouth bass lol. Keep your spool light! 125 ft of thin braid and use leader! Should be able to cast 1/16th Oz jigs and 2 to 3 Inch soft plastics of your choice!

And three people bought the same setup that I bought. But some time or another if you can I would like to get your thoughts on the Shimano Sensilight Light action 7 foot rod. I found mine on Amazon.

@@rougaroux2359 sweet! The zephyr bfs is outdated, if you want a better reel for UL and L, the Tsurinoya dark wolf ultra is better. The Shimano sensilite is a super budget rod and it's actually not impressive in my experience. I tried it once from a local. I gave my local a try with the Tsurinoya Dragon C702L and they loved it so much he bought one too! You can get Tsurinoya products listed above at Www.baitfinesseempire.com

I only have a limited knowledge on electromagnetic forces created by eddy currents, but I don't think it matters whether there are an uneven number of magnets on the brake arms because the force acting on the spool ONLY opposes the direction of travel (but is along the same plane as the braking surface). So the reason the brake arms shoot outwards during a cast is because the pivots on them limit the otherwise lateral movement into an outward motion. If the force had a normal vector to the braking surface (outward direction), then the brake arms would not be flung out at all, and uneven magnets would induce a sideways torque on the spool towards the brake arm with less magnets. In this case it would be best to balance the brake arms. Just speculation though, could be wrong. I wonder how the new VE2 will affect Kestrel sales, I feel like most people will see far better value in the VE2.

Thanks for sharing! That definitely helps a lot and with that said, i'll pop one more off and try some pond hopping with super light lures :) I think this reel price would drop. This reel shouldn't be priced 220 MSRP. should be around 160 at best. Given the cheaper one is out and given that the 11.11 sale on aliexpress.. the US price may drop after the US black friday/christmas sales. If they continue to try and sell it 220.. it's not happening! Especially with Yen down.. people would rather pay a bit more for JDM stuff!

Haven't gotten out for the fall bite yet. Been either too busy or sun went down before I can get packed. Wanted to test out a pro tip. Got a transparent and metallic jerkbait. Need a matte to complete the recommendation. If it catches fish, to be determined.

Perhaps when I get a new one. This is an old outdated one that was great for learning. I still have much to learn as I don't use it as much as I claim in my videos lol. I look for water temp, side structure scan to see if there are schooling or monster fish. i mark structure. I log sonar to make maps. I use a lowrance Elite 5 TI. I find lowrance easier to use than hummingbird when i played at the store and stuck with it since. I think you need to first figure out your mounting solutions first before picking a brand :P

You may not believe this but I just got back from fishing our lake with my KastKing Kestrel Elite on the KastKing Zephyr UL rod with a Z-man Stinger Z on a 1/8 oz jig., The pickerel bite was on.

The brake issue isn't acceptable at Kastking's price point for the Kestrel. Still a great fishing video. Hopefully the perch bite turns on for you soon.

For many users this is not a problem but a dignity. At this moment kestrel costs 120$ for 11.11. And they have the valiant eagle II if you don't want to pay for magnesium.

I’d hate to give up a spot but if your want to catch over 75 crappie and perch from the bank!!! We’ll probably catch a couple bass over 4-5lbs in New Jersey which is insane pickerel around 3-7lbs I just caught a 3.4lb black crappie over the weekend and a 2.3lb perch I’ll hit you up on instagram
