I like to do the majority of my cleanup in fall also. I like to see it neat and tidy through the winter. I feel like I’ve put my gardens to bed while I have my winters rest and I’m not thinking about the mess and all the work I have in the spring. Just makes me feel better❣️

Yep I used to do spring clean up but our huge norway maples drop so many leaves that it makes a mess for spring. We mow them into crumbs, mix with grass cuttings and mushroom compost, and wait all winter for our new pile of compost dirt to happen. Lot of work but so worth it! Happy weekend people!

This video reminds me that I've been making the right decisions with my garden by keeping annuals and perennials to a minimum. I love my conifers and evergreens and I don't mind deciduous shrubs. No such thing as a maintenance free garden but I'll do what I can to keep it as low as possible so that I can sit back, relax and enjoy it! I already have a full time job.

Oh Laura, thank you, thank you for demonstrating to me that change can be embraced despite my natural behavior of always desiring to keep things as status quo. You have mentioned you do not search for change but you sure do a wonderful job at transitioning your garden spaces. Perhaps this is with Aaron’s nudging (push??😅) but you have been such an encouragement for me to witness how planting something in one place doesn’t mean it will always need to remain in that place for a lifetime - I’m referring to the weeping cherry tree, here!! You guys are such a wonderful team, continually balancing life and allowing us all to come along and learn with and from you. ❤

Everytime you’ve shown the area with the pallet walkway, since you’ve started all of the alterations to that area, I am just amazed at how small that part of the garden really is. When everything was intact, it seemed like such a bigger space, yet intimate, like a secret pathway. This gives me inspiration for my garden. I’m really enjoying this view into how an established garden can be re-tooled.

When Laura says her plants were all fine when she cut them back in the fall, please remember that she lives in the high desert. It’s extremely dry there. When you cut a plant back in fall you’re removing its protection from snow and moisture. It’s moisture getting into the crown of the plant that will kill it. For people in areas that have wet, cold winters, it’s even more important to save your cleanup for the spring. As far as insects overwintering, the goal of a garden is to have a balanced ecosystem. That means you will have some “bad” insects, but they don’t get out of control, because you encourage beneficial insects, birds, and your soil is healthy.
@Bamboo4U2
@Bamboo4U2 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you except for herbaceous perennials. They need to be cut back in autumn. They do NOT die back gracefully. They melt into a pile of mush (hemerocallis, hostas, etc.).

I’m not a fan of weeping cherries either. They always look messy and sick to me. I think it would be pretty to use the tall skinny junipers you talked about to line the curve of the pallet walkway to create some mystery and separation of the formal and cottage gardens of the Hartley and chicken coop. Walking that path and having it open up to the gorgeous symmetry of those 4 beds would be a sight! But you’re the expert! I’m sure it will be lovely whatever you decide to do! Have a great weekend everybody!!

I love that you show how much work really goes into gardening and creating and upkeep of beautiful spaces like yours. I get frustrated that my body doesn’t cooperate and allow me to do as much as I could when I was your age. I like fall cleanup the best to keep rodents from having nesting spots as well as to have a nice fresh start in the spring. This summer was so hot and hard to be outside that our yard totally got away from us and portions turned into jungles. Thankfully I found a wonderfully hardworking family of landscapers who managed to get it all cleaned up and “buttoned up” as you say yesterday even with some snow on the ground in places. They accomplished in a day what would have taken us about five days. What a blessing! It made me think of you and how you say Paul and Bethany are such a blessing to have. 😊♥️

What a refreshing difference around the chicken coop--definite sigh of relief. Another great vignette to enjoy from the Hartley, highlighting the climbing roses. Great spot to add more roses. More paths, brick, and gravel? I worry that the amazing form of the new quadrants will be diluted, if not lost. Perhaps just extending the quadrant path with a bench at the end would be better than another path and bump out? Hoping it's mirrored on the other side. K.I.S.S. Phlox are gorgeous!

Hi Laura and Aaron! The area around the chicken coop looks so much better now. I do hope you'll keep the pallet walkway there. I always enjoy seeing it. I was sorry to see you cut the cherry tree down. I was hoping you would find a new home, or space, for it. I hope you'll show us what Ken does with the trunk. Thank you so much for sharing!

Oh wow Laura, you are so amazing with your cleanups that you do in your beautiful garden. I have to be honest I really hate aphids, they are such an awful bug, I remember I got some on one of my house plants and I took it outside and hosed it down and the plant came back but I still don't like those at all. I also am not that crazy about all of the leaves we have to deal with when fall hits. I also really like how that area around the chicken coop is looking, you did so much cleanup there, and it was sad to see that tree have to come down but seeing what you saved and your friend making something out of it will be so wonderful to have and always remember that tree. It is also so nice to see Russell and I have always wondered how Cheddar was doing because I hardly ever see him as much as we do Russell. Thanks for a great video that I had a lot of fun watching and you always give me so much inspiration to get busy and clean up my own tiny garden before the snow hits. Have a great rest of your weekend, sending love and hugs, bye!! 😂🤗😻💜❣💞

I’m seriously trying not to let my yard go to crap just because of the crappy weather... Thanks Laura for providing this video to remind my of my never ending duties❣️🥰

📝 I would suggest keeping a list of all your plants that need to be covered when it freezes. I keep lists for everything. It makes it so much easier than trying to remember everything and then beating yourself up if you forgot something.

I agree. After I'd dug up a few of my treasured plants, I decided to keep a list which developed over time into a catalog/journal for every year of my garden. Fun to look back at them and see the changes. Great winter project to tweak it and make a list of plans for the next season.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for stating what I feel is obvious, about cleaning up the garden in the Fall. I live in an area ( Maine) that has a huge issue with Deer ticks ( that carry 4 different viruses, one of which is fatal!). Plus we have 2 small dogs that run round the yard. The deer ticks LOVE to hang out in the garden debris all winter. It is impracticable to have to check both dogs each time they come in from playing in the yard, each day. Since we border a Natural Wildlife area, I feel the beneficial insects can live in the woods there, versus my yard. During the growing season, I grow a LOT of pollinator friendly plants. However people make me feel guilty for doing my Fall clean up, but it is the most sensible things for us. Thank you Laura.

Liking the idea of shortening the pallet walkway and centering something striking on the end of it.
