I was hiking one day years ago. I enjoyed the hike unlike any other. I had a sense of serenity. Afterwards I tried to figure out why the hike had been so enjoyable. There were certain requirements. The temperature was ideal. The sky way blue with no chance of rain. I had had a good night's sleep. I had a hearty breakfast and so I was not hungry. I had no other plans for the day. I am retired, in good health and 70 years old. I have enough money to ride out my days as long as there is not catastrophic inflation or I live to 130. I have become aware that nearly nothing irritates me anymore. In a sense, I am on that hike.

I love this video. I always come back to it when I need a reality check. I wish there were more videos like this. But for now I thank you. And Sam. 👍🏻

They tell you, "You are not free; you are constrained by the chemistry of your brain. You are just a neural machine." Yet, some of them advise you to embrace life, overcome challenges, strengthen your personality, and build psychological resilience. Isn't that a huge contradiction? If my brain is the one controlling all this, then why give me advice, since neural determinism is supposedly responsible for achieving these outcomes? However, we often lean toward feeling enthusiasm and strength as a result of applying such ideas in our minds, which clearly indicates the existence-and power-of human will. But we tend to forget to logically analyze the contradiction in such claims, like those made by Sam Harris. He says, "You are just a machine," implying that there is no "you" in reality, and yet he tells you to follow certain advice. Isn't my application of such advice proof of my will to change my perspective and thoughts about matters? Isn't my interaction with life’s events with happiness, strength, and joy evidence of my free will? Or does merely recalling something involuntarily mean the absence of free will? That’s a shallow philosophical absurdity. The speed at which we make daily decisions and analyze situations within our minds makes people like Harris imagine that our brains are solely responsible for everything. But in reality, you are the one exercising your freedom and will through your brain. Reflect on this: the speed of analyzing scenarios when you want to make a decision or the rapid transition from one idea to another within your mind does not indicate the absence of "you." Instead, it reflects the precision of our minds. It is you, acting with will, who makes those transitions. Of course, you will exercise your freedom in what you experience and learn. So, don’t ask, "Why did that image come to my mind and not another?" and conclude, "It wasn’t me who chose." That’s nonsense. 4o window.__oai_logHTML?window.__oai_logHTML():window.__oai_SSR_HTML=window.__oai_SSR_HTML||Date.now();requestAnimationFrame((function(){window.__oai_logTTI?window.__oai_logTTI():window.__oai_SSR_TTI=window.__oai_SSR_TTI||Date.now()}))

I don't miss the infinity of time that passed before my birth, after death will be much the same. May another infinity of time pass, until I exist again. The nature of the universe leads me to believe, these cycles happen endlessly.

The argument about getting angry at the slow driver is fallacious. Exactly _because_ life is short I'm getting angry at the slow driver forcing me to be in my car longer than necessary (thereby robbing me of precious family time etc). For every "absurdity" or "impossibility" you notice, Sam, there is almost always a counterargument.

I feel for you my brother and know im out here rooting for you to see that worthiness and love within yourself....the deepest spirtual truth is that there is no, I, me, you. I imagine you are an overthinker, thoughts continually arising in the mind, all of negativity, causing this feeling of self hate. For a moment, right now as you are reading this, all you are thinking about is exactly what you are reading, where have all the thoughts of negativity gone, no need to think about it, just keep on reading which is helpful in training he mind to stay focused on one tasks. Through out our lives our brains took in a shitload amount of data, that has come into our conciouness and was processed by the brain, to create our perceptions we have today. Most of this informations we've taken in, has set us up for failure. We are taught to believe that doing more, grinding hard, being a man, is the way to show your worthiness to the world, but knowing that there is an infinite amount of things that can be done, that logic doesebt make sense. The mind will always be craving and desiring more. Right now, there is nothing you need to do, drop it all right now. Take a deep breath in, drop everything on the exhale, feel that space of peace that is within you always....if you say you don't feel the peace after that, well then again take a deep breath, and drop fucking everything on the exhale, nothing needs to be done. ..Sincerely wish you the best, One Love 💪❤ ( I use that F word with a hint of humor, im sure you can feel that)

@@patrickkissane4341 Thanks for the long reply. I almost started to enjoy life when I saw the opportunity to buy my own place. It was a foreclosed property selling dirt cheap in an amazing location. I wanted to buy it and I could have but I was a little bitch and got scared to spend all my money on something that I found 12 hours until to closing auction, and haven't even been inside. Well I fucking should have because not only would I have had a place to live, I would have started to build wealth, and residual income for years. But I lost the bid, when I should have just kept bidding. Fuck I miss every opportunity that comes my way. That is why I hate my self so incredibly much.

@@JimJanger external opportunities are endless, don't let missing somthin like that drag ya down. Keep looking for a place, or turn a vehicle into a little travel home? There are endless things to do out in the world, and I have to say none of them are what bring us to the place of ultimate Contentment. That is somthing that is within us, and it is always right here and now. Thats not say that seizing an opportunity that you truly desire won't bring you some fullest and perspective, so get at it!

@@patrickkissane4341 I live in a toxic environment and that was my chance of investing in real-estate and build a portfolio. While giving myself peace of mind and focus on my future. Its not just some place, I was the perfect place for me. all i had to do was keep bidding, but I missed it by a second and it closed. (entirely my fault for being a scared little bitch). Now ill have to pay 2x the rent for a property that does help me build equity and in a terrible location in town. I'm looking to build wealth as soon as possible and I needed a place to stay that I enjoyed. Yeah I'm going to regret that opportunity for probably a year or 2, I have been getting at it, but Im selective and I know what I want... Lots of money, and before Im 40.

@@JimJanger hmmm, theres a quote by jim Carrey "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of so they can see that it's not the answer.”.this is truth pill that isnt easy to swallow, but there is nothing outside of ourself that brings us peace of mind. That peace and Contentment is with you now. All power to you, get that mind focused on your goal and get at it, slow and steady, you got it. PEACE

Yet another amazing JRE food for thought-video, thank you so much! Have you considered typing subtitles for these? That is the only way I could think of that would make these even better. But these are golden even without them, so good job on that and keep on doing these! We all are very grateful :) Edit: Nevermind, I cried my eyes out. Tears of sadness, of missed opportunities but also of gratefulness and hopefulness of all that lies ahead of me. Hans Zimmer's Time is generally overused on all those motivational videos but man, you and Sam Harriss made the best of it right here. I turned on the automatic subtitles and they worked nicely on this video. Again, thank you for this!
