I'm using Coastal here in the DFW Texas area, it has Prodiamine, Simazine, and Imazaquin. I tried it for the first time last fall with very good results, I'm running behind this season so I'll still be applying in November, depending on the results of the late applications, this just might be my go-to spring and fall service.

in the case of many people out there overseeding is going on, when you can apply the fall application to not affect the new grass.

@timryan1360

You can use Tupersan as a pre for crab grass and seed into it. You can use quinclorac to kill germinated grabgrass without killing the lawn (need MSO). I spot spray as a homeowner. Not professionally. Takes time, but I mix my own. Allows for seeding while preventing and killing. I use 2,4-d throughout the year through ortho line asa spot spray, but if its only a couple danelions? Steak knife and pull. My back yard needs a different plan of attack than the front, but slowly catching the back up to the front. Cant wait for Spring 18. Mine is mostly fescue with rye and blue mixed in. Northern KY.

For a homeowner, would it be a little better to apply prodiamine in late August to mid September (it has a long lasting effect) and do the Princep later (maybe mid October to early November) since it doesn’t last as long? Thanks as always for your helpful advice!

Jason I put out Barricade granulated a couple of days ago to prevent the PO Anna from germinating. Yesterday and today we received about 4 inches of rain and tonight it is suppose to get down to The lower 50 rain tomorrow again then get in the 40’s by Monday! Should I worry about putting down more pre- emergent or is it to late! I am assuming that the Barricade got washed away!
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think the barricade got washed away but that still doesn't mean that you might not have some poa. It's possible that some of the poa has already germinated before you applied and it's also possible that some poa will still not be stopped by using barricade. We usually add simazine with the pre-emergent to help control poa
@eliteoutdoors2748
@eliteoutdoors2748 7 жыл бұрын
We've found Specticle does a much more effective job on most cool season weed prevention when applied at the right time. Prodiamine will let some of that Poa through. It's an expensive application but Specticle at 6-8oz per acre will save you a lot of headaches come March and April!
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
+Elite Outdoors thanks for the comment. I am planning on using spectacle on about half of my properties this fall. Looking forward to seeing the difference. Do you notice a difference on other weeds other than poa?
@eliteoutdoors2748
@eliteoutdoors2748 7 жыл бұрын
Lawn Care Life yes absolutely. We are about 20 miles north of Atlanta. It's VERY obvious around here come spring time which properties had Specticle applied. Timing is everything as I'm sure you know. It's already a couple weeks late to be most effective on annual grassy weeds for my area. Specticle is very broad spectrum and has a long residual so it has allowed us to eliminate the pridiamine we would normally add to our late November round. We get the last of our Specticle down by September 1 and do not apply any other pre emergent until dimension in early February. This along with proper nutrition and post emergent control has given us 100% clean Bermuda grass in spring/early summer
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
+Elite Outdoors that is great to hear. This year should allow me to see the difference between specticle and prodiamine. If my results are as good as yours then I may switch to 100% specticle next year. At least on my Bermuda lawns, which for me is about 80% of my customers. Do you think specticle also helps with burnweed the following spring? I have heard mixed reports on that
@eliteoutdoors2748
@eliteoutdoors2748 7 жыл бұрын
Lawn Care Life burnweed has not been a problem at all for us. It's hard to say if it's due to the Specticle or the Dimension and barricade we use in early spring since burnweed typically germinates in the spring.

Clemson University Extension says to lay down 0-0-50 or 0-0-60 at least 6 weeks BEFORE the first frost. Mine went down 2 weeks ago. I live in Columbia, SC. My turf is Centipede grass. My rate for 0-0-60 was 1.6 lbs per 1k sq/ft. Check with your local Extension office to be sure where you live.

Eric Sopp Have you set any dates for your spring app of pre em yet? I'm shooting for 1st or 2nd weekend in Feb then a core aerate and over seed about 9 weeks later but just not too sure if that's enough time after the pre em goes down. Any thoughts? My fall app went down today. Might do another December 9th

Harry Pouncey not sure on a date yet, but I better get it right. I didn't use pre this past spring since I did a lawn rehab by seed. The crabgrass was insane and I was amazed at how much it can take over. It was a real battle.

Curious.. Up here in the north we're in full swing aer/seed season.. If you do 2 pre-emergent apps a year, where in that schedule do you fit in aeration season?
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
Aeration is not a standard part of the program here. Some companies offer it, others don't. I think most people aerate in the spring here. Because we have warm season grasses that go dormant in the winter, there is not much overseeding going on in the fall. I do 3 pre emergent apps. One in the fall, one in January/feb, and one in march/april

I can appreciate the high-tech mechanical churning and agitation in your high tech tank. :) But I have you beat by a mile - I chug along, jerking my 25 gallon tank in little herky-jerky movements, back and forth like a topwater lure zig zagging across the lawn, to the point where my whole apparatus is begging to fly apart. It is constantly agitated, and so are my innards as I ride my mower.

Thanks for the info. I started buying my fertilizer for the year at Wal-Mart in Sept., when it goes on clearance. My yard is 1/2 acre with fruit trees. I got 33lb bags of 13-13-13 for $2.00, 40 lb bags of 10-10-10 for $2.50, and 12.5 lb bags of Bayer 35-0-3 3 in 1 Weed and Feed (6 months weed barrier) for $5.. So I basically bought around $350 worth of fertilizer for $60. I just put down the Bayer, hoping the weed barrier will work as my pre-emergent for the winter. I have enough Bayer left to use it again in March. The active ingredients are Dicamba acid, Penoxulam, and Indaziflam. Do you think I will be disappointed with this product?
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
+Barry Wuthrich sounds like you got a great deal. Looks like the Bayer product has both a pre and post emergent in it. I am not familiar with that particular product so I don't have an opinion on it. I would like to hear how it works for you

I'll try and remember to follow up with you. I had a lot of clover and crabgrass this year for the first time, due to some really dumb mistakes I made last year with the lawn. Never had that problem before and never put down pre or post emergent or much fertilizer. So I'm in repair mode.

Jason, am I too late to get the pre em out for my fall treatment? its October 11th here, and temps are getting into the 40s at night here in West Texas. I REALLY want to improve my lawn quality next year and had a bad POA and crabgrass problem this season. I want to step it up in 2018. Thanks!
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
+rbljackson if you are having night temperatures in the 40s then most likely some cool season weeds have already germinated but that does not mean it would not be worth putting down a pre-emergent. And you can still prevent some that have not germinated yet. Also by adding post-emergent to the mix you can hopefully control some of the weeds that have already germinated

I had new sod laid on July 21 (zeon zoysia). Would it be ok to put Barricade down to stop the winter weeds on sod that has been down 8 to 9 weeks?
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 7 жыл бұрын
I would check to make sure it is rooted well. You can wait longer to make sure it is rooted or just wait until spring if you don't want to take any chances with new sod. If you wait until spring, you will probably have some cool season weeds pop up buy that's not a big deal in the long run
