Doc explains that the timing of lawn preemergent application is often more important than the product. You want your lawn preemergent at top strength when the targeted weed is starting to germinate. You may have to adjust your lawn's schedule.

Btw I had to pull a few weeds and I applied dirt booster a month or two ago and I was amazed at the mycorrhizal fungi just allllll in the roots and dirt I pulled up and that was just the shallow stuff in a section I have made a no water area so I just imagine the damp areas deeper down with grasses more adapted to fostering the fungi. I wish I took a picture it was mind boggling.

I’m going to avoid pre emergent on my Zeon Zoysia this season…& just let nature do its own thing and tolerate the weeds when the lawn comes back out of dormancy in 2025. My rationale: I’ve used pre and post on my Zoysia and I had a notable adverse effect. My Zeon Zoysia sod is about 2 seasons old…but I think it’s best to let it grow for 3-5 years (seasons)….without any pre or post. Once fully matured…then treat it. I also think warm season grasses will have Poa Annua to varying degrees. And yes…I agree to treat Poa Annua with a selective Poa Annua weed product when it’s dormant and call it a day. It seems that pre emergent hurts growth when it’s active (out of dormancy).

Doc, the label for Andersons Barricade says you can put down pre m 6 to 8 weeks before seeding perennial rye or 6 weeks after when the roots are into the 2nd inch. I plan to seed in early October so by late November I plan to put down the Barricade. Any tips or info on what to avoid? Thanks!

good verbal clarification about POA ANNUA (not 'poe anna') germination /emergence and timing. However, a good ole' fashioned (paper or even electronically-displayed) CALENDAR would provide VISUAL clarity to support the verbal info.

In one of your older videos you mentioned that with a newly seeded lawn you can apply pre-emergant in the middle of Winter (January). I'm in Michigan and just did my full KBG renovation a couple weeks ago. Things are starting to fill in. I'm worried about weeds and especially POA and annual ryegrass which might inadvertantly be mixed into my seed. Should I do my pre-emergant in January? It's very cold and my sprinkler will be winterized so I won't be able to water it in. Are you recommending granular or liquid?

Doc, remember that rain forecast that looked so promising in this video? That forecast like all others we have had this season was pretty much pure hogwash! If and when we do get rain at my house in Commerce I might and I say its a BIG might get 0.20" if I am lucky. The ground is so hard I had to get someone from UGA Extension service to come to the house and use an augur to pull the soil samples.

Doc, Any advice on how to ERADICATE centipede from a bermuda lawn? I had a soil sample evaluated in June and they said the phosphorus is low but and the Ph is 6.2. They also said to add 0-46-0 fertilizer but not until growing season starts next year. This stuff has gone from about a 4 foot circle to about 12 feet this year so I'd like to do something before then but I don't know what to do. Any help would be appreciated! - Thanks

For those of us in south Florida the whole calendar is on its head. I wish someone would do a similar calendar for this climate. Also Seeding is a headache as the weeds outperform the Bermuda seed. Been fighting it for 2 yrs now. Kill the weeds and need to wait for whatever time before seed. Water seed and new weeds grow. Can't put down PE while seeding. Can't win!
@KamiKomplex504
@KamiKomplex504 28 күн бұрын
Water your weeds, try to get them to germinate and then let the land lay bear for a few weeks. You can send Bermuda into August even September in Florida, hit it with fertilizer and water heavily and it will come in before natural dormancy unless you are dealing with shade. So April, till and level, water. May glypho out all the weeds, light till to disturb up those seeds. Water, June treat weeds and then pre-emergents if you want extra security, leave it 2 weeks and seed Bermuda and end of July and August that hit it with that water and fertilizer and it will explode up. Most people don't want to deal with a dead yard for a month watering weeds 😅 but it really works.

I've been planting blue grama and buffalo grass and holy cow seed is expensive. Glad I have one of these small city outskirts yards, only 2500 sqft. Otherwise would be broke. I think Bermuda is pretty cheap comparatively. Also buffalo on paper is ok but in reality expect even doing everything really well to only have 10% take and you can't give it the time it needs to fill in, that happens in another season and will be weeded out and dried out if other grass isn't mixed in, hence the blue grama.

I'm a landscaper in Southern Rhode Island where we have cool season grasses, URI #2 mostly, which is a mix of some fescues and KGB. I do mostly mowing, but for the last few years I've been expanding into fertilizing. This season I tried a prodiamine product, and for many of my lawns I was somewhat late, early to mid april, where for prodiamine I was told to get it down as early as late march. Just for context, in my area it is recommended that dimension products get put down in mid april. My plan for trying prodiamine was to get it down, then do a second round in the recommended 18 weeks, which would've put most of my lawns at around early to late July, but by my own 30 year experience, I've seen crabgrass come up in dimension treated lawns as early as late June. But, I decided to wait the recommended time. Well, it ended up a disaster with the crabgrass and weeds. Early on, the 1st shot of prodiamine did its job, even on the lawns I put it down a little late for. I haven't bothered with the 2nd hit of prodiamine. I'll be spraying post-emergent. Next season I'll try putting down the second shot of prodiamine in mid-june, and will make certain that 1st shot goes down on the last week of march. I'm very disappointed, and wondered if you had any thoughts to add on this?

My lawn is so hard. I want to scalp and aerate this fall before overseeding. When should I aerate?
@SmooveBee1
@SmooveBee1 28 күн бұрын
Aerate frequently, many times a year if you have hard ground. Same issue here; so you should own an aerator if your soil is compacted; aerating once a year does very little.

I'm in GA...clay soil.... I've got hard soil..... I've had my lawn aerated twice this year and my grass looks better and the Bermuda grass is sending out roots and filling in. I'm the 3rd owner of the house. Previous owners didn't care about southern weeds so this year I've been getting the weeds, crabgrass and nutsedge, eliminated. It's a process but 2025 will be the year of beefing up the Bermuda grass to fill-in areas more. The lawn is green and looking much better this year. Even my neighbors have noticed the difference. They probably appreciate not having a weed patch right next door. LOL!

yea, finally a change, been dry here. We got a good rain that lasted for 3 or so hours or so, but was light to medium, mostly light, so the rain didn't run off allowing the ground to absorb better. That's crazy what you are doing. Only thing I don't like is sometimes that corn can create volunteer corn the next season if you don't get most of it out. I love shucking corn.

I know you maybe busy and hope to get your feedback on this, I live in the gulf coast part of Florida I am not knowledgeable on the grass type that I have. I am dealing with some weeds of course and working always on this issue . I will put a link at the end of these questions of my work in progress. I have approximately in total front and back 2100 sq feet. I am not sure what grass seed I can use to overseed my lawn through the winter. It has been suggested by neighbor's to use 2 types of grass seeds Perennial Rye Grass seed or Annual Rye Grass seed both right now are equally fair priced to buy I get more seeds for the Annual price wise or if there another option it would be great to here your thought, also if you have an idea for pre emergent that will keep crab grass and weeds to a minimum to throw down with the overseeding any suggestion or thoughts are greatly appreciated please and thank you

6:10 how are you having lower temps than me smh ... I live north north Colorado at the foothills getting upper 80s 0 rain. I like Colorado but if anyone asks me if I recommend loving a yard and moving up here ... No, plant a few hardy ass trees and a desert style garden with good amounts of deep hardscape and call it quits. Otherwise buffalo grass is the only seed to plant here, or go broke on kbg sod. Weeds though, weeds are explosive 😂 evolved to just invade in the shorter hotter warm season and crowd out the frost hardy plants. Absolute chaos zone.

Hey Doc....great video as always and I for one had a helluva time with poa annua grass earlier this spring and it took a bottle of Negate to finally get rid of it. And that's with putting 4 bags of pre-emergent down both last fall then early spring. It was quite rainy to start the year out, too. So, this year I'm going to change a little. I do have common Bermuda grass on the top side of my property, where the field lines are, and have a hybrid Bermuda grass (was sod) on the bottom side (on other side of driveway). This is on a tad under an acre. But, I was wondering about something in your video as you walked by the side of your house with that white-ish container to the right of your outside air unit. What's in there? I thought at first it was a generator but then thought it might be a cover for propane tanks? Or just storage? I'm about to get rid of the 250 gallon propane tank and go to a pair of 40lb tanks with a regulator as all I use it for is our gas oven and the (rarely used) gas fireplace. Just curious... Thanks
