best episode IMO. Very emotional. One can only remotely grasp the feeling of the wall's fall for Germans, but here is some great insight. Even the Korean girl's appearance at the end was a very worthy bonus track.

My history teacher is the president of the club of Berlin history teachers and he told us that once, South Korean history teachers visited Berlin and asked for a recipe for a good reunification. This group visited some cities in Germany but also Warsaw to ask the Polish how they felt about the reunification of Germany.

I was last in Berlin in 1988. I crossed into East Berlin through Checkpoint Charlie and spent the evening in a pub in East Berlin. I still have not seen Berlin without the wall. I hope to go back there this summer with my daughter.

Such an amazing video! You know, Robert Kennedy, brother of John F Kennedy who was so admired by Berliners, once said "It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." When I think about what happened on that night and in subsequent weeks it's clear that this was such a time in German history. After so many years separated a nation, a people became whole again.

What an emotional content, loved it!! I watched it after watching your newest video on East West differences! Perhaps you could do this again on November 9th this year or something similar! I am from Romania, I remember how i was 4 years old and my mother broke into tears as they knocked down the communist regime at the Revolution in '89, we ran onto the balcony and there were people all over the streets yelling and celebrating!

Is there a specific dialect in Cologne, or do they speak what you could call "standard" German? Also, which cities speak the closest to the standard version of German?
@easylanguages
@easylanguages 9 жыл бұрын
In Cologne people speak "Kölsch". There is lots of material online: www.koelsch-woerterbuch.de - But of course, we need to do an episode about it soon :) About the city that they say off that it speaks closest to standard: they say its Hanover :)

I was there on the day. By the Wall. A great time. But the West Germans were a bit patronising to the East German on the day giving them Bannas and their 100DM that the government paid to East Germans that came over. But overall a great celebration. Likewise in the reunification of Germany the next year on Silvesterabend in Berlin was a wonderful time.

Some of the people use Präteritum like fiel, rief. I thought they are not much used in spoken German. Is it a Berliner thing, or an age thing, or an education thing, or ....

Is it recommended to read the German subtitles or just hear what they're saying?
@catfugue2603
@catfugue2603 9 жыл бұрын
that depends on what level you're at. if you feel confident just listening to the audio, good for you! but if you're more of an intermediate learner like myself, you may have to follow along with the subtitles to understand. maybe a combination of both approaches will work for you. the great thing about easy languages is that you get to choose your own approach to learning!

Berliners say "letztendlich" instead of "schliesslich". Has anyone else noticed that?
@Fero631
@Fero631 9 жыл бұрын
"Schließlich" and "letztendlich" are interchangeable, regardless of where in Germany you're from. It's done everywhere, not just in Berlin.
@fremejoker
@fremejoker 8 жыл бұрын
+tromboneJTS The word 'letztendlich' is used in this case, because the fall of the wall was the final act after a long period of a divided German nation. If you use 'schließlich' there is a possibility that there is a step after it, while using 'letztendlich' it is semantically clear there is no next step (the German nation was no longer divided). So, most of the time 'schließlich/letztendlich' are interchangeable, but there is a slightly semantic difference.
