Fall Sewing & Knitting Plans 🍂

The weather’s cooling down and I’m starting to plan cozier projects and experimenting with softer autumnal colors versus louder burgundy, red, and black tones in previous years in my everlasting quest to finding my colors 😂 I found some snuggly and soft knits that I can't wait to work with and I'll also be starting what I hope will become a wardrobe staple in time for a family visit in the US in November! I hope you enjoy 😊

Itchy yarns: it's likely the silk mohair that's causing the slight itchiness, it's unfortunately common for silk mohairs. I find Knitting for Olive's silk mohair to be one of the less itchy mohairs, but to me it's still a bit itchy. In most cases, you can substitute silk mohair for another similar weight yarn (lace weight), such as thin alpaca yarns, suri or even cashmere, if you find that it's too itchy against the skin :) But silk mohair does create a lovely warm fabric with a beautiful halo effect! I use silk mohairs a lot for cardigans, since it's not directly against the skin. There are also some silk mohairs with a higher composition of silk, which tend to make them less itchy - but also more expensive, and Knitting for Olive is already relatively expensive (but also good quality!). I was going to comment this exact same thing. I find that suri alpaca silk is not itchy at all and makes a very lovely and soft fabric. I actually find Along Avec Anna’s silk mohair even less itchy and her patterns are beautiful - they remind me of Sezanne’s knitwear.

Titicaca from Holst Garn is a good alternative to silk mohair. Enjoy your knitting!

I am so impressed with your crafting work ethic. I've been a tailor for nearly 50 years and I don't have as many projects in the pipeline as you, and I sew 10 hours per day!!! Good for you. Enjoy your trip.

you are so talented, I embroidered a sweater with yarn, it turned out real cute. I have sensitive skin also, maybe you could sew a flannel slip to wear underneath, I also like to sew flannel face cloths for washing. I hope you have a lovely holiday season and Bonjour.

I love the fabric from that pink/beige slip dress! I wish I could buy that somewhere and make my own skirt - slip dresses aren't my thing either! I'd love to see the finished project 😊

I have a wool tank in a similar fabric and I give it a good rinse when it’s sweaty and air dry it flat. You can also use a little detergent, too.

I am from Montreal Canada, but lived in LA for 17 years. I found the hottest temperatures to be in Oct, with a normal heat wave up to 40 Celsius. Good luck :) Re the black silk dress, another trend is somewhat sheer fabric, and layered over your slip dress, that could be very pretty as well

Hi Sarah. I think the knitted sweater will look great with the jeans you are planning. They look to be similar colors. I am currently working on an unlined blazer and will be loosely planning more cozy makes for fall and winter here in northeast Ohio.

Hi there, they all look lovely projects and the colours you have chosen are so pretty. I have just today ordered fabric for a sweatshirt and some cotton twill for cargo pants. I am trying to add in some solids as I make so many prints nothing goes together! Happy sewing.☺

I love hearing your sewing (and knitting) plans for Fall. The denim looks great. I wouldn't worry at all about the colour not being traditionally perceived as autumnal. Those softer shades look really beautiful on you, and it'll be a versatile neutral to wear with your other garments. I'm also planning to make a new pair of jeans before a trip, in my case to Japan in a month. I have an existing me-made pair that I'm going to alter first, and then make a new pair, and some jersey tops and pretty blouses, if time allows (it probably won't - there's nothing like setting completely unrealistic goals for yourself)

I don’t often sew pants either but I did try the Brooks Jeans because I also love Helen’s Closet. They turned out ok but ….. not great. Hope yours turn out much better!!!

Hey Sarah, Merino should soften with blocking you can try Soak. If it’s still a little itchy try bait conditioner.

That's a good idea! I often start thinking of very ambitious projects like coats or blazers and then have a hard time finding the motivation in the cold and dark when I get home from work 😂 Simple projects sound good 😊

Lovely plans! I love cardigans as well, can’t live without them, both summer and winter here in Sweden! So I’ll soon start a cardigan projekt with a gorgeous knit fabric, yellow with small leaves in a lighter yellow. I have made my own pattern, copied a rtw buttondown cardigan and I have made it once before. Have a nice holiday!

Ah have a lovely trip and visit! I haven’t really settled my plans for fall yet as it has been still quite warm here and I maybe need a deadline to get myself going. It’s an interesting bit of psychology that we need to convince ourselves to make what we want 😂 loved all your plans and can’t wait to see them. Ps I also am a slow knitter compared to the list I want to knit. I’ve decided to try and settle on 1 project per f/w season. If anything else happens that’s a bonus!🎉

Beautiful colour palette you’ve chosen. I got my colours done last year and I’m a summer, the colours of which are very much what you’re working with. I’ve often thought you’d suit the summer palette so now we shall see. Enjoy!!

Lovely to hear all your plans. Great you're planning to see your family soon! I totally get what you say about feeling 'exposed' in slip dresses. They do feel like lingerie! Great to see you're knitting too. I think the itchiness might come from the mohair, not from the merino, as merino is usually very round and soft.
