Good analysis. You pointed out something interesting, issues with the equipment itself; the plugging up, picking up rocks, not running deep enough in hard or dry ground, and so on. This is where AI may really shine and help out in monitoring both, the tractor and the implement it's pulling. The technology looks very promising but it's still relatively in its infancy and will need some time to advance to the point where it will be practical for most real world farming operations. The small scale of the equipment involved also says this system, as it exists right now, is more practical for much of Europe but not so much for the U.S., Canada, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Russia, or even Ukraine. Large countries with typically large farms and fields would require this technology to be scaled up 5 or 6 times to deal with the large farms we're used to in North America.

Crazy how technology is fast approaching all the dreams and aspirations I thought of as a kid while watching "The Jetsons"! 🤣 Really interesting video Zoe! I actually laughed to myself when imagining what was going on when you were approached about trying this out and all I could think of was you going "Hell Yes, Let's Do This" with your usual excitement! Living in Ohio as well, earlier this week we had rain and in that space of time on that particular day, COW-lumbus got MORE rain in just 24 hours than ALL OF OCTOBER.....and that's not counting Aug--Sept. and the lack of rain in those months too! Incredibly this year in Ohio! Great post and LQQKING forward to the future of Ghost Driving Tractors! MOO From This Buckeye! O-H 👋

Think you have got it covered Zoe, I have a New Holland combine with automation but I can cover more ground than it can on auto, if I come to some laid crop it doesn’t see it so hits to fast! As for a fully automated tractor yes it’s very clever but as you have pointed out it doesn’t know when there’s a blockage or a shear bolt goes, or even when a point needs replacing or is lost! Some fields have a dozen transmission poles in them, some with wire stays, you have lift out implement and back up so as not to miss more than needed, auto tractor wouldn’t do this! I think they are on the right track but nowhere near where it needs to be. You have pointed out it often stops, if I was out spraying I’ve not got time to be watching what it’s doing or stopping every five minutes to restart it! As you have pointed out might as well be sat in the tractor myself. I Have no doubt this is the future of farming but it’s still along way off yet.

Although it is early in the R&D phases of this technology, is there any ideas as to the liability (in the legal sense) farmers will need to assume in order to incorporate this into operations? No doubt large operations will be the first adopters, but what about small farms? Will it be affordable after the lawyers and government agencies get involved?

Automation could turn rental land back into farming land for older farmers. Not to be too morbid but how does it handle animal detection? Can it differentiate between let's say a fawn and a border collie?

Hi a few technical thoughts when different companies are involved and there’s integration especially electronics/ software when a problem develops ie tractor can bus vs the other companies interface that is both hardware and software you would want to know what service agreements and who is going to address the problem , warranty and after when a software upgrades, I worked for companies with this issue it can be quit problematic and your in the middle. It’s tag your it game . I’m not putting this down just making a awareness issue.

Zoe I know this technology is nice . But I think I would still stick to your vertical tillage zoe and you can cover more ground in less time. Don't get me wrong this is only my opinion. Every buddy may like this option I know here where I live you wouldn't get good cell service so it wouldn't work well here. Thanks zoe for this video.

I still believe that there needs to be someone in the tractor. What would happen if something gets hung in blades?Also a operator in cab can detect any unusual sound. Suppose that there is a big hole in field. I would never trust a driverless tractor.

Regarding who's monitoring the tractor, with potentially thousands or even hundreds of thousands of tractors running on a company's system, clearly the company cannot afford to monitor all those individual pieces of equipment without being paid to do so by their customers. Someday, maybe, AI will be able to handle this chore, but for now it will have to be people monitored. Check out driverless taxis and Tesla's autonomously driven cars to see the real world problems with these systems and this technology. Autonomous driven equipment does make more sense in farmers' fields than on our roads and streets but it's going to take some time before these systems are truly autonomous, with no human monitoring involved. It may be that headlands will still have to be done by a person who can differentiate trees blowing in the wind from a steer or a deer standing at the edge of a field. Then, once enough headland is done to give good clearance from the field's edge, the tractor can be put in autonomous mode with somewhat reduced sensitivity so that cornstalks blowing in the wind, small rocks, or small animals won't trigger the safety stop software and the fieldwork can be done with fewer interruptions. This may make the job of monitoring the equipment easy enough so that a person can handle it while doing some other, less intellectually demanding chores around the farm. This would still be a pain but maybe doable. Otherwise it's going to cost money to have someone monitoring the autonomous tractor making its rounds.

Hi again Zoe. When you drove the 8r didn't it come with cameras covering the back when you drove all the JD tractors and construction equipment.
@fountainvalley1005 сағат бұрын
I still believe the real reason to use the technology is if you can live with the consequences of a failure. What happens if the tractor leaves the field? Unless there was a 100% redundant system designed to stop the tractor say by turning off the fuel I would be very concerned about using it. By redundant I mean independent GPS, control computer, and fuel shut off system that defaults to off by spring return on the loss of power or communications. You don’t want the tractor driving into the road hitting a school bus full of children. The redundant system would also need to be isolated from the internet to prevent hacking.

It would pay for itself if you had 4 or 5 pieces working at the same time with one person moiniterig it an one moving it from field to field.

You’d have to buy the kits for all of the equipment individually. The monitoring can actually be done remotely by the company as part of the subscription I believe
