Arcane is a videogame adaptation that prioritizes being a great story over selling its game. Everything about it feels like art, so I want to talk about it.
Spoilers for: Arcane, Spider-man, Record of Ragnorak, Castlevania Season 4

I disagree with you on one point. Caitlyn is actually trying to find herself. Hers is a voyage of self-discovery. She knows that she has been sheltered by her parents, lied to by her society, and longs to see the "Real World." Piltover is a world of masks and appearances. Hell, her parents wanted her to never see Jayce again after his mishap. When she meets Vi she gets a shot of reality and sees a person without masks. Vi is real. She says what she means and doesn't mince words. What you see is what you get. This makes Caitlyn, who was already questioning things, begin to open up to a new world and new viewpoints. Marcus showing his true colors shatters what is left of her preconceptions and makes her question the very nature of Piltover and the undercity. The enforcers that she idolized under Grayson are shown to be the corrupt thugs that Vi said they were. She at that point begins to realize who she wants to be and what values she actually stands for. This gets doubled down on when the council refuses to see reason and Vi tells her to forget her. Caitlyn is far from done with her version of the hero's journey, but all the elements are there.

I think you misunderstood my point. Everything you said happens during the story, in the present. I agree that Caitlyn gets development through the current narrative. What I argue is that they don't spend a lot of time on WHY she disagrees with her parents or why she wants to pursue the truth. That allow us to infer that info from her general character instead of telling us. Thank you for your comment!

This whole series embraces the philosophy of "actions speak louder than words." There are so many shows that don't respect their audience and feel the need to explain and remind them of everything that's going on. For example, there's a scene in the third episode where Vi gives Powder a flare and tells her to light it if she needs her. Three episodes later, Jinx lights the flare at a pivotal moment. In a normal show, we would have a flashback to Vi telling Jinx saying "Light the flare to find me," but this show trusts its audience to have enough of a brain to remember what the flare is and where it came from. Also, if we look at Echo vs. Jinx, when Echo tackles her and starts beating the shit out of her, he doesn't need to tell her how sad he is that they're fighting (something a normal show would do). He just looks at her, and both characters pause for a moment, a sadness in their eyes and a realization of how fucked up the situation is. ITS SO FUCKING GOOD and it would be ruined with words by a normal show.

The whole Ekko and Jinx fight is a masterclass in storytelling; he gives a smug and plays the clock exactly how he did as kid - she recognizes it and there’s a second where she pauses like saying “really?” but her answer was to also smile and go to stance. The audience knows that there’s something there but before we can connect the dots the sequence kicks in and drags home how tragic the whole situation truly is. Pick any show that treats its audience like they’re dumbasses and Ekko would start a long monologue about how they used to play x and whatnot. In less than 5 minutes we get more action, character depth and plot development than some shows get after a whole season.
@Karanthaneos
@Karanthaneos 2 жыл бұрын
To be perfectly fair, they do put a voiceover of Vi repeating what she said about lighting the flare, as well as Vander's voice when Caitlin tells Vi she has a good heart. I'd say we're so used to them going overboard with explanation and flashbacks something like that is acceptable, considering it's so small and non-intrusive.
@DM-Raven
@DM-Raven 2 жыл бұрын
@@Karanthaneos They do sometimes have a voice-over reminder. But as you said, a normal series would have an involved cut-scene while this show respects the audience enough to give a hint rather than a detailed callback.

This is also unfortunately why viwers often miss build up towards certain things or visual storytelling details or leads them to misunderstand or misconstrue situations because people are so used to getting things spelled out to them. Good examples can be found whenever storyline involves Mel. People are quick to dismiss her as manipulative, corrupt or evil because they miss the build up towards the Mel/Jayce romance or that the reason she votes for putting him on the council is because he can't get his and Viktor's projects to help the undercity greenlit without council's explicit consent, which he offhandedly mentions in episode 4 and then complains to her about (and their dialogue implies it's not the first time they've had that conversation). Even when given additional information about her in episode 7, 8 and 9, where it's shown that she actually shares Jayce's idealism and desire to help, some viewers are already too set in their interpretation to process that, which is unfortunate. But it also makes it a great show to rewatch because you always find a new detail, foreshadowing or callback.

Seeing how every character to some degree seems to foil each other in some way it does help connect the story to each other Both Silco and Jayce have to deal with leadership and "allies" who are more of a hindrance to their plans Heimer advocates for restraint with advancement to avoid calamity while Singed kinda started one (he made the addictive Shimmer that screwed over countless people) to advance science in the here and now, and seemingly saved Viktor by doing so. Heck even Silco and Jinx. Silco truly cares for both Zaun and Jinx yet he is also very directly responsible for a lot of the bad things that happen to both of them (being a drug lord and in a way normalizing Jinx's insanity). In the same vein Jinx truly cares for both the families she had with Vander and Silco, but is also very directly responsible for their untimely deaths.

I could literally tell you why Caitlyn does what she does. Because I've been literally in her shoes, or rather she has been in mine. This why her arc is a beatiful one, because it reflects how real people feel and would actually act irl. I come from a wealthy background, and have felt privileged my whole life. So I feel the necessity to share this with others, give others what I have gotten basically as a birth right. Also I feel the need to prove myself more than others, since I basically got dealt such a good hand, I feel the need to prove myself by playing the game. Showing my skill, showing I too should have the right to be here. Showing that, I too should have same rights as everyone. That I am necessary. Can't believe how deep, that got, so fast. I felt that way for a long time, until I didn't. Maybe I will leave that for a another time. But just to tell you this, so you can see how it is justified how Caitlyn feels.

I also think it's quite clear Grayson makes a strong impression on Caitlyn when they talk after the shooting competition. Grayson depicts her skills as tools of service, and the service being rewarding itself. You can see how Caitlyn is almost shaken by the sentiment, and when it returns to the present with Caitlyn as an Enforcer, Arcane let's us make our own conclusions.
@Nata-ch2bk
@Nata-ch2bk 2 жыл бұрын
9:56 -> I think the flashback with Caitlyn at the start of the episode 5 is meant to give us some development for Caitlyn's motivations. We can see that the discussion she had with Grayson had an impact on her, and we can assume that she looked up to Grayson from that point onwards. Therefore giving her motivation to become a respectable enforcer in the future. Especially considering the fact that she's always been gifted with a rifle and that's the weapon of choice of enforcers in Piltover so there was that connection as well.

@troikas3353

@@FallenGale I'd argue the bigger driving factor for her is the frustration she's repeatedly shown at not having any agency in her own life. She's shown multiple times trying to break out from the shadow of her parents. Her taking a job "below her station", refusing a ceremonial position in Jayce's staff to stay in the field, being influenced by Grayson's comments on civil service, getting visibly upset by her parents interfering with her career, taking it upon herself to pursue what turned out to be the Silco case. Her story is essentially an idealistic, highly empathetic but also extremely sheltered person, whos frustrated by the gilded cage shes living in, trying to take control of her own life and actually do something good in the world while also slowly having her eyes opened to the reality that life is messier than she thinks it is. There's no denying her personal arc is a secondary plot line in S1, it's not the focus. But its still there and I don't think it was meant to be S1's focus. I suspect that her and Vi are going to be a central story pillar for next season. Vi's own trauma isn't really delved into this season all that much, the hell she went through in prison and the aftermath of everything S1 did to her emotionally. Likewise Cait's not yet finished becoming the person she wants to be. Much like how S1 explored Silco/Jinx and Viktor/Jayce, I imagine S2 will explore Caitlyn/Vi and Heimerdinger/Ekko. I could be wrong, but this show absolutely loves its narrative parallels and these character pairings share thematic similarities.

I think Gale's point was that we didnt NEED Caitlyn to say why she joined the police force, we didnt need an Episode 3 character arc for her, because the show does so much with so little. The only nitpick I have is with Jayce suddenly knowing how to fight without any prior training, we only knew him as a blacksmith, scientist and politician, but when did he learn how to handle a Hextech transforming hammer in a fight with superhuman mutants when he never shown fighting anybody before or practiced with it. That issue kinda to me out of the scene and I felt they needed some explanation for it same way they showed Vi and Cat practicing their respective combat styles (and even Jinx as powder practices shooting paint guns with Mylo).
@Shax22132
@Shax22132 2 жыл бұрын
@@AscendantStoic That was a bit odd to me as well. I can kind of excuse it with a few reasons. 1. Jayce was fighting berserker type enemies who had very little subtlety, tactics, or training. They were strong and fast, but that was about it. 2. Jayce's weapon was a giant hammer with a shield function and it could also shoot out AOE blasts of energy. That's a pretty forgiving weapon that doesn't require as much skill or training compared to fighting hand to hand or shooting.

I think this primarily comes from anime's honestly obnoxious need to directly adapt the source material to the show. A manga often has to do fightsplaining because visual storytelling through action is a lot harder with a series of stills. But instead of the anime writers adapting that exposition in a more anime-original way, they just directly translate: manga does a punch here - anime does a punch here manga has this line of exposition to describe the power of the punch - anime does it too Its the perfect example of the idea that a completely faithful adaptation does not make it a good adaptation. I don't have strong feelings about League of Legends and wouldn't bat an eye if LoL's servers suddenly where shut down. But I love the world and the characters that Riot Games created, even if I sometimes disagree with how certain stories and characters are handled. So it's only natural that I also love Arcane, and I love that everyone else praises it as well. But is it just me or is everyone just overreacting when it comes to LoL the actual game? I never got into the game when my friends where really into it, but even when I try it now, I don't see anything inherently wrong with the game itself. Could it be that the reason the community hates LoL is actually the community itself? I don't see this kind of hate for Legends of Runeterra or Valorant, so it must be a League of Legends exclusive thing. And I'm probably the kind of person that if you asked "Who is this character?" I'd tell you their lore and personality first before going into their abilities, if I even know what their in-game abilities are. The only thing I don't like is that everything related to the Runeterra universe has the League of Legends title to it, which people automatically see as a bad thing. But I also understand that "A Runeterra Story" isn't as marketable as "A League of Legends Story". What I'm saying is: Only thinking of the MOBA when hearing League of Legends is like only thinking of A New Hope when hearing Star Wars, because the very first movie used to be simply called Star Wars when it came out.

A big thanks to all the studios who participated in the creation of this world... Actually not all videos were made by riot, they are always checking the quality of their product, but the majority of the work is delegated to other companies specialized in animation.

Caitlyn's development is subtle but deeper than a trope. Schnee highlights it in his Caitlyn and Vi video.

I feel you have misunderstood my point. I agree that her development is deeper than a trope. I said her backstory followed common tropes. Development and backstory are two completely different parts of a character. Thanks for the comment!

@@FallenGale Point taken, development and backstory are different. I still disagree, the backstory (pre the final time period shown) is more than just trope. And more than a sense of justice, though that is strong too. She has pride, a desire to earn her place on her own merits, not just be given things for her name. While she follows societal/parental expectations she doesn't connect, she sees herself as a misfit, other. An interest in the undercity is established. She adores Jayce and tries to stand up for him, despite how bound she feels.

I disagree with you about cupcake. True she didn’t have a blatantly obvious arch like jinix or the other but she wasn’t suppose to. That’ll be for next season. She did have a very well done and subtle character development in order not to draw to much attention from the main story which to me is way harder then it sounds.

@FallenGale

The answer is that complaint was mostly a joke. Yuumi is a cat character who's gimmick is that you can attach to a person and not have to click anything because you passively boost them. A good amount of the player base find her annoying because of this. So I added it at the end of my list as a bit of a joke for current players. Thanks for your comment!
