Hello, Charleen here, I am from down in south Louisiana. I just finished a falling charm baby quilt. In place of one of the charms I used a photos of the baby I am giving the quilt to as a gift. Thank you for the easy to understand tutorials.

After looking at the way Jenny laid them out, i noticed that if you look at the two sides with the strips as the number "7" and the letter "L", she started with the block with the strips on the top and the right side of the charm looks like a number "7"- then the next charm square had the strips on the left and bottom of the charm looks like a letter "L". So you could see that it would be laid out as follows: 7 L 7 L 7 L 7 L etc and the next row would start with an "L"

Years ago I collected purple fabric and cut it up in 5' squares for a future quilt, and then carefully filed them away waiting until "someday" - When I saw this tutorial by Jenny I knew that "someday" had come! This was such a fun project that I kept making blocks and ended up with a really big quilt! Thanks again Jenny for a fabulous tutorial and for helping me bust my stash so I can purchase more!

I stick with simplicity and color. It works for me and those that receive my meager makings seem to love them. Mainly because they are not so fancy that they want to put them away and not use them.

If it's easier, when making this quilt, think of those 2.5" borders that are sewn around the two sides of the charms as "7" and "L". So you stagger 7-L-7-L-7-L-7-L-7-L......make sense? And the next row is the exact opposite: L-7-L-7-L-7-L-7--L.

For those that are unable to figure out the size, I come up with 94 inches wide and length can be 1 or 2 more rows. There are 12 blocks across and each block measures 6.5 inches (5-inch charm minus 1/2 inch for your seams) equals 78 inches, plus 2-inch sashing on 2 sides (2.5 inches minus 1/2 inch for seams); plus a 2-inch inner border in the same color as your block sashing (2.5 inches minus 1/2 inch for seams) equals 82 inches. Then 6-inch outer border (6.5 inches wide) equals 94 inches. Size 94 x 100.5 (12 blocks across and 13 rows down) backing needs are 8-7/8 yards with a 3 inch overage on all sides (needed for longarm quilting) based on 42-inch fabric. Size 94 x 107 (12 blocks across and 14 rows down) 9-1/2 yards based on 42-inch fabric. Outer border: 94 x 100.5 finished quilt size = 1-5/8 yards of 42-inch fabric cut 9 strips at 6.5 inches wide. Outer border: 94 x 107 finished quilt size = 1-5/6 yards of 42-inch fabric but 10 strips at 6.5 inches wide. I also recommend downloading for your phone or computer Robert Kaufman quilting calculator app. It is there at your fingertips to assist at all times. Hope this helps, happy quilting ladies. I just finished my Falling Charms 14 across and 15 down with no outside border for a king bed using various black, cream, and gold etched charms with black sashing. Quilted on my TinLizzie 18 and QBOT using Spring Flowers by Intelligent Quilting. It turned out fantastic and I love it.
