Must drive over from Truckee to check out that trail. Also was pleased to hear Mt. Huff is an acceptable place to ride e-bikes. Last I sent a note to the Trail managers they said no. Lots of environmental studies showing that e-bikes does nothing more than open up trails to more people - that is good thing in my opinion. Tahoe basin will open up “officially” in the spring.

I was against e-bikes until spending a few hours on them. My favorite so far is the yeti with the big fox suspension (forgot which models). I have aCF Ibis with all the top of the line components and the good e-bikes have just enough weight down low that they handle the downhills better and smoother. Climbing the crazy uphills and being able to just explore for hours and get an amazing workout and then ride down is like nothing else. I dirtbike and e-bikes are almost as fun for me. The regular bike is OK but I’ve never loved it.

Brian! That cockpit! Range anxiety is a real thing… I ran out on an epic high-alpine ride out in Keystone/A-basin this past October. Thankfully the battery died with only about 5% of riding left to go….The steepest part of the climb to lug around a 50+lb bike!

That's a Sugar Pine cone- World's longest. Three needles per facicle. Jeffrey Pine, which are also present, have shorter generally fatter cones and longer needles, three per facicle and very similar to Ponderosa Pine except the Jeffrey cones are larger and tend to be a bit of an obstruction in the trails at times.

The only downside is a slight weight gain….
@grizzkid795Ай бұрын
If 20 lbs is considered slight. Oh, I guess the light versions are around 10 lbs heavier than regular bikes.
@grizzkid795Ай бұрын
Oh, and the cost. Oh, and that you have to charge them. Oh, and repairs and eventual battery replacement. Oh, and if you have to hike bike with it on your back.
@BURSTspeedАй бұрын
@@grizzkid795 most people hate on them until they try them and they realize how good they can be. Charging them is not that big of a deal. Being able to ride slightly faster without being fatigued and also getting a lot more mileage in on a ride makes it a lot more fun and worthwhile to travel for biking if you're not a fitness freak. And you still get a hell of a workout if you push yourself.
@grizzkid795Ай бұрын
I own an ebike, but use it mainly for trail work and often pulling a trailer. I prefer the regular bike for recreation for all the reasons I mentioned plus I like the feel of a regular bike- more nimble and playful. Also, I just like the idea of simple, human powered biking. My wife loves her ebike and can keep up on the climbs if I ride the regular bike. Now I admit when I get older the ebike may become my norm, but being a young 69, it would be silly to go to a full time ebike. For old guys like yourself I can totally understand going with the ebike.

I am a huge dog person, my wife and i always have 2, but i don't bring them loose on the trail, a big field or open forest hike, sure, but not on trail...its just annoying to run into them and not know their temperament. Like the loose Rotweiller i ran into on training run two weeks ago...i stopped bc he was staring me down (and you know rated top 5 most dangerous dogs in the world) and the owner said "he's friendly dude!" and i responded, "yeah but does he know that?!" and detoured my way around them bc the dog was not listening to the owners commands to sit, he kept approaching.

I think double black is a decent rating if you're grading on a scale of what's in the area. This thing is relentlessly steep and I would be willing to bet that most people will have at least one crash at some point. I kept trying to let it rip and I kept almost flying off every corner. I'd say it's a black diamond in my mind, but I'd love for you to go ride it and see for yourself!

I think lots trad MTB riders poo-poo e-bikes for the same reason you mention: the heavier feel puts them off. Then, once you learn to adapt your riding to the bike, you don’t really lose anything to the weight. I’m still on the back wheel of many a fit ripper on the downs, because for those of us that live in both the Moto and MTB world, the ebike still weighs nothing. And we know how to turn!
@bkxcАй бұрын
Very good point!

Heavier feel - then get an SL ebike. In 2019 I demo'd the Specialize Turbo Levo and indeed it felt unwieldy on the downs. I said, take 10 lbs off and I'll take one. And damn they did. 40 lbs, and it's better downhill than my old Evil. There is absolutely no downside. And ignore the trad E bike haters. They just haven't tried one.
