Why is the rate that the ladder is falling negative instead of positive?

Negative indicates the rate of decrease in height. However, my answer should ignore the sign since I already know it's falling. So that was my mistake.

Thanks for saying that the negative sign should have been ignored. It's similar to deceleration in which the negative sign is ignored.
