Mike - Here's some philosophy I got from a hospital administrator I worked for down in central Missouri. The administrator was a Missouri native and had a pretty strong accent. When I attempted to justify something that I needed to get the job done, I prided myself on seeking the best prices for what I needed, matched up to quality of the product. Good morning Mike and Melissa ! Great video. Sure glad to see you starting the framing in the building. The tools you bought, the compound miter saw and the saw stand will be a big helper. I really liked the setup I was able to purchase years ago. The wheels on one end enable the saw to be easily moved around by one person too. Thanks for sharing with us and sharing such a convincing math equations on Melissa, I’ll tell you that it didn’t work for me 54 years ago when I first got married and it still won’t hold up today but we (my wife and I) still use on each other after all these years. Last Thursday, I was pricing 2x4x8' KD for a project at the big orange box. The following day when I picked it up, the price had dropped a dollar per board. I'm so glad the prices have come down. I bought the Dewalt 12" compound miter (no slider) 20 years ago. It still works perfectly and has been used a ton, but now I'm tempted to get a new one like yours. I wonder if I can use that math on my wife!

Melisa, you might not see the savings in Mike buying the new miter saw, but if he does the interior framing by himself instead of hiring a framing crew, he'll save a whole lot more than $800. I'm sure that saw will pay for itself on the completion of the interior of the building. 👍

One thing you might want to consider. When I built my shop and my wife's craft area, We installed 1 1/2" Styrofoam between the girts before building the stud wall. Saved on a lot of insulation later and also makes the R value much higher for the colder months. Easy to Cut and just press in and then the studs hold it there. Just a thought!

Hey Mike, your hold down bolts for the compound miter should go down and the nut goes on from the bottom. Just a tad bit more work involved but in the long run it will make a difference.

Mike, when you use the saw, attach a shop vac to the exhaust to suck up the saw dust, that is until you hook up a dust collector for the entire shop.

I don't want to be a "You Should" guy but as a carpenter for nearly 40 years It is best to use treated lumber anywhere it comes in contact with the concrete (bottom plates). It is code in most states I think. You probably know that already. Also if you figure the linear footage of the walls you are building and figure 1 stud per foot it usually works out right on material by the time you build T post, corner post, jacks at doors and windows and your studs on 16" centers. Trying to be helpful! Nice saw by the way! Edit to add that you could build a trough up at ceiling and run lights in there for indirect lighting and the bolts would be inside.

Mike, now go back and reverse the bolts for the quick release. You'll bang your knuckles on those bolts every time you use the saw. I've been using the same system for 5 or so years. I hang my saw and work stand from the wall as it takes up less space. The stand is one of the best tools DeWalt ever made for mobility.

Core power tools for your woodshop that are worth buying good quality: Sliding Compound Mitre (which you just got), Table Saw (Really consider Sawstop), Drill Press, Bandsaw, Dust Collection with chip separator, planer or planer/moulder. Also, never have enough clamps!

If it’s not too late, take the saw back, pony up the extra $200 and get the 120 Flexvolt DEWALT saw. You should know by now the advantages of being cord free. You’ll be thanking yourself everyday while you use it in building the pavilion and all the other projects to come. And the batteries will turbo charge all your other 20 volt tools. You’ll fall in love with the shadow cut line for lining up your cuts. No more speed square, just a tick mark and you can cut to the 32nd if you want. Mine was set up perfect out of the box. Dust collection is just a tad better than useless.

Mike - there are a whole bunch of accessories for the stand, the extensions have legs you can, there are roller supports, there are wider supports. I should know I own the same one and have the accessories. One thing you may also want to get is a shroud that goes around the back to catch the sawdust. It wont catch it all but it sure does help. Its a messy tool.

Good luck on that explanation flying with Melissa. My experience was showing what it did that would be tough to fo otherwise worked better. It was many years ago, I needed to remove some nailed in rotten boards. I had bought a ‘saws-all’ and caught heck (by the way I still have the saw and it still works great). When I unpacked it, put in a bi metal blade and ran the length of the rotten board and cut the nails into and was removing the board about 5 minutes later-she said you knew that when you bought it didn’t you. Yep reason for purchase!

Mike, you seem as though you are pretty good with money and decisions. You need what you need. Melissa knows you well enough but I think she likes to give you a hard time now and then. I am a Dewalt guy since they re-appeared in the early ‘90’s with their excellent 14.2 volt line. I have used their 12 inch double compound miter saw but I went with the new 12 inch Makita. Like the Bosch and Festool you can place it up against a wall. Less important on a job site but important in a shop, although I think there will be room in your shop!

Mike -- all good points about swings in lumber prices. Another couple reasons involve "speculators" (Wall St) driving wild swings in lumber prices, plus -- as with all Covid-related issues -- an industry-wide difficulty in finding drivers. Food, fuel, vehicles -- pretty much everything -- has been affected by driver-shortages. With the government paying people to stay home (Governors ending that in red states), drivers are beginning to return to work, and delivery costs to distributors are falling.

Mike … Built a Pergola in April that I planned last (2020) Fall and paid double of what I priced it at then. I got it from my local lumber yard. I attempted to price by at a near by Lowe’s in April but their wood as limited and not of good quality. So I got about a $1000 of misc treated from the local lumber yard. Later in July I needed two 4X4X10 and again went with the lumber yard. Over $60 for two that and the quality was not that great. Shortly thereafter being ripped off I went to Lowes and purchased similar sized wood and some her sizes. Those two 4X4X10 sold for $7.85 each 😮 … so yes I was ripped off. AND the quality of that Lowes wood was great. Sad story for sure. Keep up the good work M&M 😎

At the top of the beams, you can hide the bolts with a simple corbel, and put a little archictual oomph along the walls.
