Another awesome Bjarne Butler video! Thank YOU Bjarne for the vids, great stuff as always and great explanations for what you do and the why’s and even the the how’s. The way that your saw is acting (jumping around briefly on the RPM at times) makes ME think that some of your depth gauges (rakers) aren’t set at a consistent depth. Please say if I’m wrong on this point. BTW, there’s nothing like coffee time with you!!! ☺️

Regarding the ring counting, count the big ones right out, then count one inch out from there, and count one inch in from the bark. Average those two "small ring" counts then multiply by inches from bark to big ring section edge. Then add the number of big rings. Should be close.

Just thinking about clothing...work gear....Isn't there some type of material that wouldn't be so uncomfortable for ya'll to wear????......Under-armor....water wicking/quick drying...Here in Fla...100% cotton....and quick drying fishing shirts...long selve...But I'm not dealing with the saw dust ....Maybe check out military tactical grade clothing....just a thought.....I am sure ya'll have probably tried everything...Much Respect.....Be safe.....

Thanks for the tips. Ya it’s always the sawdust, it gets in your shirt and pants and add sweat. Then it gets real itchy. Fell long enough now to just ignore it for the most part, but it’s still an unpleasant problem.

The hill crew bucks repos, rips oversized logs and flags each log that flys.

Hi Bjarne, I was wondering what the minimum diameter of logs are that you harvest, i.e what you leave in the woods when topping and clear felling? I'm guessing lop and top left behind breaks down fairly quickly in those environments and becomes food for the next generation of trees coming after the felling. Regards from Scotland.

It depends on species and method of logging. If it heli then they’ll only take high grade wood down to 15” or 20” top. For cedar they’ll take all of it. On a conventional job it again depends on market prices, buyers specifications, distance to mill, wood quality and species

Hey, I’ve been having chemo treatments for about the last year and so had a lot of downtime or I have no energy and I love to watch your KZbin stuff I logged up in Southeast Alaska in the 70s and 80s down around Baronouf and Chichigoff Lots of memories know so sometimes as many as 6 to 8 hours a day I can do nothing but lay here and watch your KZbin video. Hi Edwin. Already answered the audit question in this comments section. I don’t film much bucking because usually nothing happens and the log doesn’t move much. We have “bucking cards” that tell use what the owner/customer wants the log lengths to be, depending on tree diameter, species and quality of the log.

As always you make a great video 👍. By looking at the rings on the stump it had 30 years of fast growth. In the tight ring growth it was about 20 years an inch or so. It's almost 300 year's old, certainly very valuable wood. Saving it out on a 1 to 1 slope in a rock pile is another story. Great work Bjarne. Be good.

Good video. I would like to get a close look on where exactly your back cut is. Also, why do you high stump them? Ok, I figured it out. To keep the logs from falling down the bluff. Who is going to come and pull those logs out? I feel bad for the people that work the rigging. I run my own sawmill and cut my own trees but at 68, I’m lucky to fell 2 trees in a day and buck them the next day.

There’s a separate crew that marks the merch wood for the chopper pilots to see and they also buck repo logs and rip oversize. Must be fun having you own mill. Have wood prices gone up where you are?

@@BjarneButler They did go up but now they are back down to where they were 2 years ago. I mostly cut slabs from oak and Black walnut. I also cut Red Cedar for myself for sheds and deck repairs. I wish I could get some of those logs you cut. They would make great framing lumber. The southern pine that grew here years ago has been logged out here. It was a great hardwood pine. It is very expensive here in the south. I’m in Northwest Arkansas in the Ozark’s. It is beautiful country. I am retired and being a sawyer is mostly hobby for me. It was my retirement dream. I fell my own trees but I am constantly trying to learn more about it. I am trying to get better at it. That’s why I asked you about your back cut. I try to put videos on my Facebook page if you would like to see some of the lumber I cut. It is Tom Sommer is my Facebook page. Since we’re so deed in the forest the internet doesn’t work very well for uploading videos so I do little short ones. Thank for answering my question.

Hi Randy. Ya those Hemlock groans can sound really cool. The boss checks my stumps, gear, bucking the logs correctly, that I’m working the block in an optimal way(to minimize double-up) and my working plan with my falling partner. And sometimes I’ll get quizzed on procedures like fire response, environmental spill or a first aid emergency. Ya we got fire watch here too but luckily we’re still able to work.
