Main show and spinoff crossovers were not new or groundbreaking in the 90s. They've been going on since much earlier. I remember watching reruns of Threes Company/The Ropers and my aunt getting excited over The Cosby/A different World crossover. (before the Cosby SA stuff)🤮

I feel like Angel and Cordy were held back by having to be the love interest and foil to Buffy. They really got to shine in this show.

Angel and Cordy taken out of Sunnydale and Buffy's orbit changes them into such interesting and compelling characters, more than they already were.

The gem was too dangerous to be allowed to exist... vamps would just keep coming after him for it. Plus what if Angelus came back? Even if they hid the ring for only emergencies, vamps would never stop coming after it.

Yeah and if I'm not mistaken, it only has the power to allow them in daylight right? Not invincibility. So Vampires can try to cut off his hand and demons could try during the day and he would be instantly klld.

Yeah sure, Angel was _really_ going to keep the ring that removed all his weaknesses as a vampire and made him literally unkillable, that'd make for a real compelling show :p From an in-universe standpoint destroying the ring is obvious, any other vampire might come after him for it just like Spike did, and the chance it could fall into the hands of vamps like the one in this episode is too high a price.

5:38 same story with the Frasier character from Cheers. Frasier was just supposed to be in episode as a romance rival to the main character, an Ivy League elitist to contract with the salt of earth working man, but the fans loved the character and Grammar played him so well that despite the head writer hating him Frasier was in the rest of the series, got an 11 season Emmy award winning spin off show and recently a continuation of said show on paramount plus Power of a fan base

The creators didn't know if this show would last (back then a show's seasons were longer and production was only four or five episodes in front of airing episodes) so they crossed over to make sure characters were still conected enough that if the show failed, actors would still have a job on BtVS. 1x03 A little disappointed Spike's making fun of Buffy intro wasn't shown. It's my favorite part of the episode. Its weird to hear The Normies see and talk about Spike like this when S7 is currently up and running on KZbin. The Normies are saying everything that is always said by everyone when Angel says and does what he does to the ring. But it works (whether you agree with Angel or not) just by Doyle saying Angel broods too much (not the exact quote he says, obviously). 1x04 Doyle's visions would be supernatural in origon (Angel even states this to Cordelia when she doesn't initially think supernatural), so while the eye camera's a clever writing idea, it wouldn't be viable to the in-universe plot. OJ Simpson's trial was only three years over at the airing of this episode. It was still big news and used in pop culture regularly. Loved the _Idol Hands_ reference joke.

So these episodes were filmed while they were watching buffy s4, but because of demand or whatever dumb reason they finally have an editor. So basically, up to S4 of Angel is available on their website, but now we’re getting the edits. My wish is that they would flood our stream with episodes just cause buffy is almost over and allow us to have this Angel content

There is another show that ripped off Buffy/Angel: The Vampire Diaries. The whole first season was spent trying to get moonstone rings so vamps could go out in the sun. By the 3rd season it seemed like whenever a person became a vampire, a ring magically appeared on their finger. The overall effect of this was that the vampires didn’t seem much like vampires anymore.

i hate when they talk about the early 00s like it was hundreds of years ago lol crossovers have been happening in tv since tv most early sitcoms started as crossovers to even earlier sitcoms

Crossovers were very popular, but Buffy and Angel had episodes that were linked, you had to watch both shows to get the full story. I don't recall any shows doing that prior to the Angel/Buffy crossovers but I could be wrong.

This was more than a crossover though so its understandable, the episode stories where linked in some cases and the only other show that i can think that did something similar was xena and hercules.

Different Strokes/Facts of Life. etc. Just to name a few. Crossovers are not new and Crossovers from main show to spinoff are not new. It's a way to introduce and support the new show, to get ppl to watch it. Buffy/Angel crossover nothing really groundbreaking.

@@NewToCool74 Correction: Boston Legal/The Practice where they shared a case. Alley McBeal & The Practice did do a crossover, but they are not spinoffs of each other. Again, ppl who think Buffy/Angel crossover was a new thing, are most likely Millennials and Gen Xrs. It's not a new trope.

The Gem of Amara Ring is from BTVS S4 episode. This is why it really make sense to watch both shows in the correct watch order as they are both linked with crossover plots, characters and storylines. Many felt it was wrong of Angel to destroy the ring, but of course it could have fallen into evil hands again. Some great little comedy moments again, especially with Doyle and Cordelia. Great to see Spike back again as he is a pivotal character in The Buffyverse. Angel is a much darker show, but its very best episodes match anything from BTVS. Here it is interesting seeing Spike chasing The Gem of Amara, as Buffy wants Angel to have it to make him invincible. Angel even though he has tasted 'daylight' knows that the ring could fall into the wrong hands again and so must destroy it, again making him possibly the most tragic character in The Buffyverse. Great to see Oz crossover as well as Spike, and the wonderfully awkward meeting again of Oz and Cordelia.

Again Angel as a show this time looks at stalking and obsession in I Fall To Pieces. An interesting take on it here to the extreme with the evil Doctor trying to use coercive control to feed his obsession by detaching his body parts. Cordelia trying to get Angel to start charging clients adds some comic relief, with the first cheque at the end being gleefully accepted by Cordelia and Doyle. Another great bit of writing with social comment on a very serious issue that affects a lot of people. Interestingly enough the evil Doctor here is the same actor that played D'Hoffryn in BTVS who we first saw in Dopplegangland S3 of BTVS, he often appeared in the show. This is very much in the style of an X-Files episode like Squeeze, where Tooms was able to manipulate his body in all sorts of contortions. A lot of reactors who begin to watch Angel just says it's not as good as BTVS, but I think Angel is a brilliant show in its own right.
