Fallkniven H1 3G after modification. Lighting a star fire.

In this video I start a fire with a "fire cone" I use the newly modified Fallkniven H1 3G.
as the weather has improved I decide to use a star fire.
I have a moan and think of a little project for next time.
I also use my new GSI kettle for the first time.

I think I have the exact opposite view of firebox’s. To me it’s a great opportunity to use different methods and lighting techniques. If you can make a small fire, you can make a big fire. There’re great when you want to make a brew and that’s it. They use a fraction of the wood and are more “leave no trace”. Basically it gets me practicing skills and making fires far more often as I wouldn’t be making a ground fire on a day hike. Never use birch bark as there’s no birch trees in the American Rockies, also lots of burn bans. Feather sticks and scrapings for me. Love your channel, keep up the good work.

Rob for me, I do use a firebox, with wood or with my Tangia alcohol burner. The reason for that is because here in Northern Ontario Canada we get such a dry spell at time that we can't have an open flame in the woodlands. Sometimes this can last anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks during the Spring and Summer months and can go longer depending on Mother Nature. So because of our Provincial laws for me and with a little imagination, a Firebox is what I have to use for cooking while out in the Woodlands. At times it gets so bad here that our fire restrictions will also forbid us from having any open flame even in the privacy of our own property.

I have far more knives than any 6 men combined would ever need, yet I still grab the same one or two that I like to use the most. @@johnnybeanz1296 Ya, I like folders too. I have about 100 locking folders and around 50 slip joints, lol. I'm aware of the Harnds Assasin, but don't own one. I do like that it's in 14C28N steel. Probably my favorite budget steel.

love seeing the fire cone again, I use firebox and woodgas stoves a lot since I wild camp on the west Pennine moors, which are mostly peat over a sub strata of low grade coal, and not somewhere you can safely have an open fire, but I agree that in the woods an open fire is the thing

Agree with the fire boxes mate. I love my TBS Salsmander stove but use it in the garden as I've not got a decent wood to go to yet, what with moving house and lockdown etc. Plus the wife would have kicked my arse if I'd spent over 100 quid on a bush box to burn twigs in the garden 😆 will be getting out more now lockdown is easing off. Love the star fire (and your putting the fire out technique 😆)and new kettle mate. Might have to copy you and get me one if them

I've been using the GSI Ketalist on day hikes since last summer. The opening is so big I can use it for cooking noodles and soup.. and my gas burner and a gas canister fit inside too! later: I use a solo stove or a bushbox often. It will not replace a roaring fire for warmth or comfort, but is much more accepted where I cannot light a big fire, for whatever reasons... I get your point about skills and usefulness, especially in an established camp... but I feel you need take other factors into account too!

I use a firebox (or other wood stoves) when there's a fire ban on or I'm somewhere more 'public' where a fire would be frowned upon, but I get what you're saying about 'real' fires. 👍🏻 I've been lighting fires in the bush (Northern Ontario) since I was knee high to a grasshopper, but even then, I sometimes still practice getting a monster fire going (waist high flames) as quick as I can. Where I live, especially in the winter, being able to get an eyeball-melting fire going could make the difference between staying alive and becoming a popsicle....

@@RobEvansWoodsman For sure. However, in my experience, (at least where I am) there are, I suppose, different 'understandings' of fire risks and bans. For example, many folks interpret "no open flames" to mean no campfires or brush burning, but contained flames (like in a wood stove or BBQ/grill) are fine. Sometimes people get around this by using charcoal in their stick stoves. However, you are right - when the bush is dry enough and the ban is severe, most respectable citizens avoid any kind of spark or flame out in the bush. In fact, I have seen it so dry that use of certain types forestry and recreational machines - like quads - are prohibited (ex: exhausts and sparks from certain blades hitting stones, etc.). On the other hand, during COVID last year, the entire province of Ontario was under a fire ban, and up here we still had a couple of feet of snow... 🤷🏼‍♂️

From the standard series the H1 has the most comfortable handle for prolonged use for me. Of course being a hunting knife prolonged use is more likely then the thinner F1 handle that's more thought for emergencies as a survival knife. A wood stove is indeed for just making a brew or a quick simple meal and does not replace making a campfire you might need for staying warm, drying out stuff or cooking several things simultaneously. Also no group of people sit around a wood box playing the ukulele and harmonica and sing along. But it's a very efficient, safe and quick way to make that brew. If I know I'm gonna use the knife a lot and have to choose between the H1 and F1 it's the H1. If it's a 'just in case' knife I throw in the F1.

Rob there's nothing wrong with being a knifeoholic in fact I think I'm in that category , I have knives made by jackloreknives ashardingknives , LBcustom , Ben Orford , Fieldandsteel , I just ain't got one of yours 🤷‍♂️ As for fire box stoves your very right in what you say ( ie a cup of coffee or yorkshire tea ) just not enough heat to dry clothes or anything else , I know you like to try different methods , would you please consider trying this method 👍 start a featherstick , to a certain degree then introduce a bit of char cloth trapped by further curls , then throw a spark from either a flint / firesteel onto the char cloth n blow 🌬🔥 the perfect BIG Match thankyou rob if you take the time out to read my shit 🙌👌🔥👍

Great video. Decathlon do a stainless kettle that is as good as the GSI and costs less and packs inside a Trangia 25 (not that you use one). I share your pain as a fellow knifeaholic.......👍👍

I got this same blade on sale, had to regrind somewhat as bevels uneven....It seems to skin best with that shape so I take it on fishing trips and it can do ok at bushcraft...it’s a certain tool I pull out for the right trip 👍 not sure if you have one but the bark river bravo 1 in 3v is the cats pj’s 😂👍cheers 🥂 from the Pacific Northwest 🇨🇦

Well, basically a fire steel; but made out of titanium, instead of carbon steel. Ham shanks and our friends in the east (Russia) seem to be promoting them. Expensive, $40+, and they claim to give a far hotter spark, but it is harder to get the flint to scrape the spark off. Not saying I'm mean, but my fire steel is a broken, small, 6" file that gives off plenty of sparks, and can still be used as a file. Thought an international man about the woods such as yourself would have come across them already. Just wondering to myself what the $40+ advantage of them is, apart from a hotter spark, and obviously a GIGANTIC weight saving ? I've seen some folk on Utube using (selling) them, but know what some of these phoney characters you see are like, apart from yourself of course. Thought an unbiased opinion from a respected expert would be good to have.

The whole point with a fire steel is that you can use various items to create a spark, if you're going to the bother and expense of buying a titanium one then you might as well spend on a really great piece of firelighting kit, ESEE firetool and LMF ferrorod for example.

The tip of the spine will give me a 7 out of 10 spark ignition out of box from the Ferro rod. .090 thick blade. This cuts above its weight in the octagon. And my brk golok I wiil put up against your Fallkniven Modern Bowie in chopping at 1/3 rd the price. :)) Original A2. Same lifetime warrantee. (As FMB premium package) Convex grind, longer blade. No it doesnt come with waterproof box or a dc4 sharpener. :) 😕 Dang thing just chops! Not that I'm not a fan of bowies. The golok weighs almost exactly the same. Sorry Rob got to disagree with you, if you can light a firebox you can light a bonfire and my firebox throws out more than enough heat to dry out clothing or heat a shelter, and it needs less wood than a campfire and doesnt risk a 'ground' fire.

knives. Have a Terrasaur as well, orange one. It seems Condor has some QC issues. Some of them have grinds that are visibly lobsided. Some of them have uneven heat treat. My Terra has that problem. Blade rolled at the belly. Better design than Garberg, in my opinion. But it's a hit and a miss thing with Condor.

It didn't carve better, because the Fallkniven H1, is a 100% hunting knife. The "bigger" Fallknivens, are general use survival knife designs, that's why you liked them better on wood. The reason that most people, insist, that Moras are the best bushcraft knives, is the fact, that 1st, scandi edges, are the best wood carvers.2nd, scandi edges, lose their performance if the blade is thicker than 3mm (Morakniv stops at 3.2mm, for their robust knives, for that reason,so the do that right too) 3d, Morakniv puts a zero scandi edge, on most of their knives and also their handles provide good ergos, designed to work properly with the "meatier" nature of scandi blades. That's the features that anybody should look for, for a good bushcraft knife. Fallkniven H1 would work better, on field dressing game tasks etc.

@@martindunwell6099 Really really sorry for the late response. KZbin doesn't notify me sometimes! I know Puronvarsi knife blades, they usually are the classic pukko design, where the blade geometry focused on cutting and slicing, better than a common full flat grinf knife! You probably have enjoed that knife a lot by now! Fins make great knives, for little money, that's a lot of value there! I bet it cuts literally like a razor!! I also love the bely of that blade, its edge shape is perfection for dressing small and medium size game! Enjoy!
