The sheath is designed to be a bit loose for the simple reason that the blade wont freeze stuck inside the sheath should you get caught out in severe weather and if you live in Scandinavia that is bound to happen. Also all Fallkniven knives come with a factory micro bevel so you can sharpen in the field with a stone. I have the A1, F1 and S1 and have never stropped them and they go razor sharp with just a DC4 stone.

I was just about to post the same thing. The sheath is designed like that for that exact reason. It is an extreme cold weather knife. Kydex can’t handle the levels of cold that this knife is designed for. That’s the same reason the tang is totally enclosed, so your skin doesn’t stick to it. If you don’t intend to go that cold then get the leather or buy a Kydex.

The F1 is the pilot survival knife and it's a last resort knife that has to be small and lightweight. The sole purpose of any pilot survival knife is that you never have to use it, but it's there when shtf. The S1 is the woodsman knife and is intended for using. The leather dangler sheath is nice but it all depends on where you are going. In wet conditions I prefer the plastic (Zytel) sheath. You can actually buy a diamond sharpener that has an adhesive side and glues to the Zytel sheath so you always have a sharpener with you.

Fällkniven is pronounced "Fellkniven". In the Czech Lands, one may carry a tactical knife as backup for a pistol. The country has a shall issue carry permit law. Knives are unregulated. These Fällkniven knives are excellent for dressing game in the field.

Great review and keep up the good work. The molded plastic sheat from Fällkniven are actually really good for the climate they come from. That is to be able to be used in the winter - 30 c (-22f) kydex will break in those temps. Leather is also good, but kydex in scandinavia is basically trash once it start to freeze.

I think they're decent as well. Slim profile, strong, nice and light, does the job. It's a very underrated sheath IMO and doesn't really deserve all the hate it gets.

And yea we are regullary outside for a couple hours at -30 using our knives. C'mon that sheat is very bad solution and such a knives deserves much better solution. There is no strenght to hold the knife properly, it is loud and give the knife too much room to move and make the noice. And at the end it is not designed to amaze at all. It is ugly to be honest.

I love Fallknivens I own a bunch of their A1/S1/F1 series, A1 is my favorite (I got my A1's as a blank without scales, then I did a really nice paracord wrap with lanyard and they ride in a Custom Skystorm (now Patriot) Leather scout sheath. They're easily one of the best survival blades you can buy (Bark River, Fiddleback Forge, and Busse are my other favorites). My F1 and S1's I've bought with micarta scales, costs more but I'm not a fan of the rubbery handle. (Most of your complaints on the F1 are solved by getting the micarta versions and a custom sheath. I also have the Northern Lights series of Fallkniven, the Idun is almost identical to the F1 but with a gorgeous stacked leather handle, it's one of my favorite all-time fixed blades. F1 is perfect for my wife who despite being 5'9", has small hands, feet, and other features. Guys with small hands and most women will like the F1. The S1 is easily in the top 10 of survival blades and easily, then if you factor in the price which is ~$150 ($100 - $250 less than similar size/quality knives) it's that much better... looks cool too.

Fällkniven used to offer kydex sheaths but the soldiers that used them during winter found that the knife got stuck as condensation or water froze in the sheath. Tl:dr, the sheath rattle is intentional.

About the sheath: Who gives a shit if it rattles, it only rattles like that if you shake it hard. I like that zytel sheath except for the nylon portions, they could do much better there and add more lashing options to the sheath (they did for the pro versions). But it's not total trash no.

Actually the sheath looks cool and a bit tactical when it is on a belt.It is not classy but sits low at beltline level,it is compact,adjusts when sitting down and very easy to clean.

A piece (or two) of bike inner tube snug around the sheath area were it clicks in makes it very secure. In fact some inner tube ranger bands fit nicely to hold a lighter or other items. You can put an adhesive sharpening on the other side. When properly modified the sheath works well for everyday carry. In fact you can flip the belt loop over and wear it IWB if you had a need to be indiscreet.

I've used both the F1 and the S1 for the past few years and never had an issue with the sheaths, I think you're exaggerating, you have nothing to worry about. I never thought the sheath was loud {whatever that means in real life!} and I never felt the knife was not secure enough in its sheath. That being said, I do not like convex blades and don't use them much these days.

Yeah my A1 never has made much any noise at all. When is this guy planning on sneaking up on armed sentries with just a knife in hand? 🙄😁 Even then, your knife would be out of it's sheath...🙃 My gets the same rattle if you shake it in hand like he does but it doesn't rattle like that when it's on your belt or cross strapped to you. Plus, he never researched why these "crap" sheaths exist in the first place. They were designed first and foremost as combat/survival knives for Swedish military who train and operate in extreme Northern climates and winters. It's Zytel so it doesn't crack in subzero temps like Kydex will. Plus, you need that looseness in the sheath so if the knife gets wet it won't freeze solid inside the sheath.
@pennsyltuckyreb9800

My biggest gripe about the Fallkniven convex grinds is there's just too much metal behind that edge. Fatty convex. Good for batoning wood but IMO thinning out that metal behind the edge wouldn't affect batoning performance at all.
@silvanigra
@silvanigra 3 жыл бұрын
@@pennsyltuckyreb9800 Exactly! In my knife buying spree period, I bought 3x S1 and 2 x F1 - I like them, they are solid knives, but not for "normal" use. A thinner blade and and a simple flat grind geometry has always proven more useful to me - whether for food preparation, for wood carving, general cutting tasks, etc. Nowadays, I'm back to simple folders, like the Buck 110 or some European Nieto folders - coupled with a Victorinox SAK, they are more than enough for the average outdoorsman, camper, hiker, etc. They slice incredibly well and with proper maintenance, they last for decades. No need for "Rambo" knives in real life.

The S1 is my go to knife when hiking and camping here in Sweden. It's a little too long to be a dedicated hunting knife, although I've used it to process both deer & moose. These days I have an H1 for hunting. I agree with you about the sheath and I prefer the leather dangler that keeps out of the way and has good retention. Anyhow, great review and enjoy!

I actually agree that the sheath on the S1 is not the best, because unlike the F1 zytel sheath, which provides you with the advantage of having a low profile and the ability to be kept in a pocket, the S1 is a large knife already, which is why I prompt you to always go for the leather dangler sheath option, which is made from high quality leather; unless you are in an arctic climate, of course

Either way Fallkniven is a great choice. The pro series is even better as the finger guard is now stainless steel, so holds up better in kydex sheaths and also is more prominent and will provide better protection.

Isn't the convex edge difficult to sharpen in the field if you chip it or dull it really bad? Does that kind of out outweigh the benefits of it for field use? Seems like people tend to gravitate back to the tried and true 1095 of the Beckers and Esee line of knives. Kinda the standard by which all others are judged right?
@ClockCutter
@ClockCutter 9 жыл бұрын
+Silver Stacker No. Nothing is easier to sharpen in the field than a convex edge. You can do it well with small, 2" x 2" pieces of sand paper and your finger tips. And, if you're just in a hurry, and have something like a ceramic rod, or smooth river rock, you can put a microbevel on it and and reshape the the edge later. I'm sold on the convex edges for field knives, as you might be able to tell. :-)
@csh6220
@csh6220 9 жыл бұрын
+Silver Stacker If you will simply strop your convex grind BEFORE it gets really dull, in 5 minutes you will have a sharp cutting edge again. If there is a bad chip in the blade, it doesn't matter what steel it is, you will need to put it on a stone or sandpaper. NOTE: with convex and sandpaper, use the stropping technique, and use a mouse pad with some give to it for proper geometry. Check out virtuovice channel and you will learn everything you need to know about convex blades.

I have the F1 and the A1. A couple of observations. In an urban environment where a person does not wear a knife on a belt in a sheath or on a clip on a pair of blue jeans, how would you carry a fixed blade knife? To make it more difficult, assume that you wear a business suit. Most people would be stumped! Now, if you still have your Fallkniven f1 with the factory sheath, put in your front pocket of your suit pants. Now try to do that with the S1 series knife. Such is how I carry the Fallkniven f1. I tried that with other blades of a similar length and it doesn't work. You already had criticism that the handle on the F1 was designed for cold conditions wherein people wear gloves. Have you tried holding the F1 wearing a pair of gloves. I don't make the comment to be sarcastic and I explain. I fix/modify/restore knives/hatchets/axes/swords. You will see beautiful wood work. Then, when someone uses an axe, he gets blisters. So, I put two layers of tape on hoes/rakes/hatchets/axes/shovels/pick aces. Layer one is cheap electrician tape or the equivalent. Layer two is tennis racket tape. Then a person does not have to wear gloves in the summer or to avoid blisters. Today, literally, it was in the 80s. I had not wrapped the handle of clippers. I got a blister and then had to tape the web of the hand. Now I am going outside and taping the clippers. This is good advice.

I just purchased from a dear friend at a very good price an S1 still with factory edge. I don't know if it's just mine but is quite disappointing, dull and has quite deeper convex on the portion near the edge. Yours in the video looks far better slight saber convex until the edge, was it your factory edge? It seems also have a nice sharp and piercing point. I will have to do an heavy regrind on mine to make it finally looks and perform like yours! Thanks for the video, at least i know it can have the geometry to perform very well! And for the kydex sheath, for me doesn't look so bad even it would have been better one like the Sissipuukko, which is totally ambidextrous and with very good retention with no need for further straps.

I have seen all of your videos, and should know this, but... have you any experience with Bark River knives. BR knives have convex grinds as well, and several steel types to choose from (A-2, 3V, etc). I believe a convex grind is superior to all other grinds for strength and sharpness. Stropping on leather before they become really dull will keep them sharp in the field. BR and Fallkniven are both fairly expensive, but worth it, with BR having the better sheath (high quality leather) by far. I want to buy one or the other, either the S1 or BR Bravo 1.25. Any suggestions? Anyone?

Have 4 BRKs and the quality control of the production doesn't match the price. None of the knives was sharp out of the box (came with a microbevel). They also all had uneven blade grinding (shows up when you sharpen the knife), the fit of the scales and pins are not impressive and (worst) the edge of my Aurora rolled terribly when removing bark from a stick on the first outing... I love the design and all the options on the BRKs. But the lack of quality control is for me simply unacceptable. Will not buy more...

I bought an S1 a couple of years ago and was disappointed that the convex grind was not symmetrical. It was changed free of charge but there was still an inconsistency in the grind on the new one which I've now lapped out. The VG10 is still prone to chipping though not as bad as when the knife was new. This tendency to chip has dented my confidence in its ability not to break under heavy shock loading. You're right about the locking detent on the thermorun sheath and I now have a leather one. It is a beautiful knife but I think my money would have been better spent on a homogenous blade steel like the Bravo 1 in A2, I can't afford the CPM3-V. I may well try the affordable Mora Garberg when it's available (even though the blade is a scandi grind). Thanks for a good post.

If you don't like a rattle in a sheath, put in cotton balls or a piece of cloth. Moreover, if you have a fixed blade knife with a little space in a cordura or material sheath, put in a small piece of wood or cloth at the bottom. Then start thinking about why some sheath makers have plastic inserts in their sheaths. And also think about why true sword makers and sword sheath makers use wood material for a sheath instead of leather/cordura.

I am not a fan of laminated steel. VG10 is not the best steel for a survival knife. CPM-3V or a any descent carbon steel is a better choice.

It hilarious that you didn’t like the Fallkniven F1 because of the handle, yet the S1 has literally the same exact handle! Hahaha

The S1 handle is longer and thicker, so that's not true.

agreed, moreover what really confuses me is that the small scale and fine woodswork activities he starts off with testing the knife are all categories in which the F1 is so much better...
@BrothersCinco
@BrothersCinco Жыл бұрын
I think he reviewed the F1 based on hype and not objective utility. That's my impression anyways. The problem is that the F1 is marketed as a "survival" knife when it's really a just small utility knife that's meant to be the only option for Swedish pilots in a total FUBAR situation.

I don't like the s1 bcz of the testing of it by survivor Lilly video review. Check that review of this knife. It chips under regular survival use Lilly put it through. The Falkniven knives are imho just a hype behind the knives. I've seen the A1 Pro hilt come loose and the blades chip and roll. Don't personally recommend Falkoven. But a cold steel SRK 3v that's a much better knife

I have had them all and FOR ME the S1 is my least favorite of the bunch. To large for finer stuff and to small for heavier stuff. A1 and F1 is the combo for me.

I had the A1XB with leather sheath and dangler. Right now using a mora garberg in cross Sheath for quick access and easy carry and fine work. I can do batoning with the mora but that it's the work of the a1x, so my edge its linger in the mora. I been thinking in NL5 or something little cheaper like the s1x as Garber substt

Hi Aaron, thanks for this great vid ! I always enjoy your opinion and I'm really looking forward to ear what do you think about the A1, as I reckon it will be the Fällkniven model that better suits your needs and taste (as mine). You're probably aware that the brand has just released their "pro-series". I was very excited about that as they announced that the sheath was being redesigned... but then very disappointed as the overall look is still cheap and ugly (although effective). I own an "old" A1, and was considering buying the S1 pro, as it comes with an improved cobalt laminated steel blade with a steel guard protecting the handle while batonning, for example. Maybe you'll be able to grab one of those in the future and give us your thoughts about it. Again, thank you for your awesome work and have a great 2016 !

You have to remember that sheath was designed for extreme cold weather in Scandinavia. Kydex would break in those temps. Leather should be fine.

I genuinely love the Fallkniven sheaths. They hang at the perfect height, they’re secure, and they’re weatherproof. It’s not form fitted so it won’t freeze inside in cold weather. I’ve actually had that happen to me with a kydex sheath during a winter backpacking trip. It rattles a bit if you shake it, but it doesn’t make any sound while wearing it.

Gary Horn I understand that, but in my mind the knife performs so well for it's price point already that it offsets it. I am a righty and I would invest in a custom sheath myself. I think it's worth it.

drainage holes are not needed to me as they don't really do what's intended. they are their to drain majority of the water out of the sheath if submerged or if very wet. the knife in the sheath with water in it basically holds water against the blade, therefore rendering drainage useless. you will still have to take the knife out to get the water out and wipe the blade off for it to dry properly. so, drainage may get excess out, but to me that's just overrated if you have to take the knife out and wipe off to keep from rusting or for maintenance. overrated
