I use to work for alot of different oilfield companies and ran all sorts of dozers over the years. Clearing brush and trees and building locations for wells. Biggest one i ran was a TD15 international. Then i had a JD 350C that i owned myself when i was doing logging. All my life my most favorite job was running heavy equipment.

Felling trees is a good description, its obvious he’s not harvesting any logs because he’s making a heck of a mess. Pity there were some good logs in there that would have been useful. A decent winch and a couple of handfuls of chokers would be handy. Still can’t beat the enjoyment of running HD equipment.

Why wasn't the timber harvested off this land ahead of the clearing operation?
@bronzearmy2645
@bronzearmy2645 Жыл бұрын
It’s often times not economical. Unless you have the proper infrastructure ahead of time, the logging company can’t bring in their big equipment. Additionally, if the amount of lumber isn’t sufficient for the day to be profitable, they will charge you additional for their labor; land clearing is a lot like concrete work - no one wants to do small jobs, so small jobs get charged like big jobs to make it worth their while.

I rented a D7 to clear my 7 acres. If it wasn’t rooted to the core of the earth it was going down. I didnt save a single log. Piled and burned. Just wasn’t worth the time of bucking it up and hauling the logs 65 miles to the nearest mill for $18 a ton.

About how much did it cost for the rental
@erichemard7066
@erichemard7066 4 жыл бұрын
Dodd Garger it really all depends where you are located. Ill break down the rental and give you the total cost. For a month rental the D7 was $6500, that included delivery and pick up. The rental agreement was for 40 hours a week runtime. For a total of 160 hrs of machine running hours for the month. Anything over that, I would’ve been charged $150 per additional hour. I totaled 80 hours of actual run time, which i was credited back $3000, because i paid for a month and only used it for two weeks. Fuel cost for 80 hrs runtime was $650. A D7 drinks a lot of fuel but makes really short work considering what you can push with it so the trade off was fair. In all..$3650 was my out of pocket expense. I was quoted $18k-$35k by some local contractors, which i dont know how they came up those figures?

In my opinion, being an owner of two dozers… this is real hard on them, especially the blade and the pivot points . I always use an excavator with a big single shank ripper . Then a dozer behind me cleaning up the mess .

If you dont know witch one you need you'd probably save money paying somebody who knows what there doing to just do it right the first time instead of paying rental fee, wasting $400/ $600 worth of fuel and then paying somebody later to come clean up the mess you created. Lol not being disrespectful by any means but I see it happen all the time!

John Deer dozers are fun. But you might be better off renting an excavator with a thumb. Then a dozer to push topsoil.

The operator needs to go back to bulldozer school, LOL. He is digging too close to the base of the pine where the roots are too big to break/cut with the blade, dig a lil farther out, the roots will cut easier and then break off near the trunk. He is digging the hole on the wrong side of the tree, you dig the hole and then push from the opposite side towards the hole so the tree has someplace to go without the resistance of the ground, he is down in the hole trying to push the tree up out of it, bad idea. Aaannnd he is trying to push with his blade too close to the ground, raise the blade as high as it will go up on the tree that way you have so much more leverage to push tree over. 28 yrs pushing with a Komatsu D31P.

ronnie32567 Thanks for your comments. Even if the operator doesn't, I wanted you to know I do. Myself I have never run a dozer. But my older brother did and I grew up in a teach a man to fish home. He told me what he was doing. How, when and why. While I have never had my hands on the controls, I was watching and cringing at how hard he was working and working against himself. Hearing my brother's voice even though he's no longer here with us. So operator, I'm not ragging on you. I am hoping you will take Ronnie's input to heart. Ronnie, thanks again. Ken

There is more than one way. I agree with digging a little farther out from the tree to break the roots. Cutting the roots on the upper side definitely makes the tree easier to push over, however. The root ball doesn't need any place to go with that tree attached to it. It will come right up out of the ground. I'm sure 27 years ago, you didn't go to school, but you figured it out with time what works for you. The way for him to get more experience is to do it.
@ronnie32567
@ronnie32567 Жыл бұрын
@@darthnatas953 problem is that pine trees have very little root ball, they have tap roots that go straight down. I’ve seen tap roots 10’ long and bigger around than the tree so the tree won’t just fall uphill from the hole. You have to dig one hell of a hole and pile the dirt on the opposite side of the hole to run the dozer up on to push higher on the tree to get more leverage. And if the pine is growing in clay that’s hard as steel if it hasn’t rained a bunch lately then good luck, you gonna need it!!!!! Yes 27 years ago I didn’t know much either BUT I searched out experienced operators and asked questions and took advice, now I know that’s a novel idea for a lot of people, but it actually works
