Like watching your interaction with your SON. If more parents would spend the time and teach and give kids something to do there would be a lot less kids in trouble. Well done with the pig's. I started raising my own pigs 3 years ago and I'm happy with them. At first I would buy 2 or 3 at a time every six months, until last year's February that I decided to buy 2 gilts and a boar with the purpose of breeding them. The sows are landrace-large white cross and the boar is a Pietrain. The sows were bred at 7 months old on July 7th and 14th respectively and had their first litter in October 27th and November 4th. One gave birth to 10 and the other to 12. The one who birthed 12 lost one of then because she accidentally crushed it. I kept 3 from each one and sold the others. And now they're pregnant again. One is due on March 30 or 31 and the other on April 6-7. So I wish you good luck and godspeed

That female you decide to breed is capable of breeding at around 6 months old so it shouldn't be long before she's ready if you can find an uncut male to breed her. If you're open to suggestions, I recommend finding someone with a boar and taking her to the boar to be bred After she's had a litter from that boar, then buy a male and he can breed not only her but the females from the litter without in-breeding. If you buy your own boar to breed her at first, he's not going to be able to breed the off-spring without in-breeding.

That was great, Wes! Really good! Nice touch on the well pump! I have an antique well pump on a very old and unused well. Good job on the drippers! That's the way to go! Good looking hogs! We raised Hampshire/Duroc's. We'd have 120 piglets on the ground at times. 10 sows, 1 boar. We raised ours for the "Market"...back in the late 70's. Careful with the Momma's, they can easily and often can roll over on their babies. A birthing pen. All the best to you ALL! I loved being a hog farmer even if it was only a brief time a long time ago. That's for your efforts!

I mix feed with a paddle on a drill. You can buy them or it’s an easy at home project. I used some all thread and squared off an end to chuck in the drill and then took a piece of angle iron with a hole drilled through the center and then double nutted the top and bottom.

Premier 1 fence, their pig fence is smaller mesh on the bottom (shock or not) solar. You can put a battery opertated drip timer at the faucet. you need pressurization for it so I put a double spigot on the faucet & leave the hose side in the off position. Auto timer is SO nice. It's going to be a fun summer with all of the new animals. I would suggest that you figure a way to mount your grinder closer to the ground so that you don't have to lift the corn as high to load it. That would also let you watch and refill the bin easier. Really enjoy watching you with your son.

Wes not sure without being there but seems your fence just isn't hot enough. If a pig touches it at all it should be hot enough to cause them to squeel. A good temporary solution would be take some of your slab wood and erect a short blocking fence just outside your netting. Then get your fence charger a bit hotter enough to make them sqeel a little when they hit it. They will soon learn to respect it.
@falllineridge
@falllineridge Жыл бұрын
I agree that the fence seems a little weak. I wonder if it's because the battery is a bit weak from sitting all winter in the shop. It's very sunny today, so I'm hoping the solar panel will top it off. They seem to be respecting it so far. I think the two strands did the trick.

Hey Mr. Green Jeans !! Well, you've jumped into the deep end of the pool, haven't you !! Piglets, and Chickens, and Turkeys OH MY !! And our Junior Supervisor is well in the game as well !! I thought the fencing you had in the previous incarnation kept the (piggies) in well, if memory serves. I don't think you ever showed an escape piggy back then either. If you watched (The Modern Yeoman) his slaughter day was an all day event within his huge compound community, and they got freezer(s) full of food that is probably going to last them a good long time, seeing the size of the pigs they took down. They were bigger than the pigs you saw on that farm at the outset of that portion of the video.

What is your chicken feed mix ratio? and what is your pig feed ratio? And why did you choose this?
@falllineridge
@falllineridge Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what the ratio is on the chicken feed. I've got that bucket marked so I forgot the weights. I got the recipe from Survival HT. Here's that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opCYl4Gdfd5gh9E On the pig feed, it's 50 pounds of corn (cracked is good, but if you can grind it, that's even better), 12 pounds of soybean meal, and 1lb, 10oz of minerals. I got that recipe from here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ7cq5Ssm6aehpI As far as my reasoning goes, I started using these recipes because they seemed to work well for the folks in those videos. I've been using the chicken feed recipe for several months now and can't imagine going back. Really great feed. The pigs are growing nicely on that recipe too, so I'm happy.

Supposedly males grow quicker. I don't think there's a difference in the taste. I picked three females because I want to be able to choose a nice one for breeding, this way I will have options. The fourth one was for meat from the start, so it made sense for it to be a male, both from availability and for meat.
