I live in LA and I can truly say that the LA traffic joke is spot on! :) It really does take SO long just to travel a very short distance. Like a 25 minute car ride just for about 5 miles or less. Man LA traffic sucks! I've even lived in China and LA's traffic is still the worse. :)

It's just temporary, though I assume this is going to become maybe an annual thing, which is great. There are guests who cannot make it to NY all the time for interviews, so NBC might well want Tonight to tap into the LA pool of guests from time to time. Plus there is a need to compete with Kimmel and so having Tonight "return home" once in a while isn't a bad thing. I don't mind Tonight being in NY but after 42 years in LA it just doesn't feel right not having it there. (The same thing if Late Night or Late Show were to move to LA after being in NY since their starts wouldn't feel right. I assume Colbert is staying in NY.) This is a good compromise.

The biggest mistake Conan made was moving to LA. Chat shows recorded there seem so stupid because LA audiences go bananas over anything. The best thing Jimmy Fallon did was to bring the Tonight Show back to New York.

It is pretty true. I live in LA and when I went to a taping of Conan the producers tell you to over exaggerate your laughter and basically go crazy even if it isn't that funny. It's pretty much forced.

Amen, I'm a rabid Conan supporter and saw that coming the moment they announced he'd move his show to LA for the Tonight Show takeover. Los Angeles was built with the sole purpose of manufacturing entertainment. Comedy just doesn't work within a structured paradigm like that, not to mention the giant studio structure. As Conan once said to Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert when talking about his Rockefeller Center Studio 6A in NYC: "Dana Carvey said it best: it's 'Comedy Compression', which is, it's not a big space, but so many people when they get their 'big show', they get a space that's too big. And they don't understand that you can't do comedy in a big space... there's no compression." I wish he would have listened to his own insight.

I don't know if Hollywood is a neighborhood or an actual city. (it was originally the name of a housing development named for the Street in Chicago where the movie folks would make movies without Edison's thugs looking for them.) But when I was in LA, I was saddened to realize Hollywood's actually a seedy little place.

Voicu Violeta I have to correct myself. Hollywood is a district of LA and not a city and hasn't been for 100 years. At it's creation as a city around 1901, it was named after a local plant that looked like holly. The housing development was named Hollwoodland and that's where we get the big sign.

he was making fun of himself. Quiz shows and talk shows would have fake applauses by pressing a button. So he's asked himself the question "does L.A. love me back", and he's pretending that the applauses are fake and that L.A. in fact does not love him and he is doing it to make himself feel good. Which is totally not true because EVERYBODY LOVES JIMMY!!!!

Johnny Carson moved the show to LA, partly for personal reasons and partly to be closer to his Hollywood pals like Bob Hope. I'm old enough to remember Johnny Carson. His Burbank-based Tonight Show was anything but "stupid."
