I recently watched his interview on Letterman nearly 40 years ago, and there's such a difference in his confidence between then and now.

Yep. Just saw it again then came here. Amazing how forty years as a performer can make you at ease in public.

I was just thinking that. As a young man, he seemed almost "on the spectrum" as they say, with his awkwardness. I don't know if it was lack of confidence as such, but definitely a lack of comfort with the interface between his mind and his environment - or something like that. But now, he's totally outgoing and connected.
@ProdigalPorcupine

@@kdub1242 I agree. As someone with autism myself, I've long thought that David has autism to some degree. It's much more subtle in this interview, but very evident in the Letterman interview 40 years ago that the OP mentioned. We tend to learn how to interact with our surroundings and people more slowly than neurotypical people, and David Byrne's progress as he's aged is a good example of this.

I'm not sure why I had this dumb idea in my head that he would be sort of aloof and esoteric. I suppose I'm forgetting he was from the late-70s and not the early 90s, where everyone was afraid of being earnest or sincere, for fear of not seeming 'cool'.

While David Byrne has got more relaxed and relatable over the years - and you can see he's really trying here - he's still not a natural interviewee. He needs a host with insight, poise, sincerity, restraint and genuine inquistiveness to bring out the best in him. Jimmy Fallon is not that guy.

Very precious souls here. And I say this to help understanding, regarding the thought of "Dingbats". In God's eyes...even the highest intellect that has ever walked the planet...which I believe was King Solomon...or, in our day...Elon Musk...or in this case...Mr. Byrne...THEY... are all...WE...are all "Dingbat" next to, God's, wisdom and understanding. We're told that, He, will mock those who disregard, He and His Son, Christ Jesus...if we go Unrepentant for our sins...unto our last breathe. Thankfully, we are mere babes in, God's, eyes...precious souls...of whom, Jesus, loves...but requires our Repentance...which is why we need "The Saviour"...Christ Jesus. The devil is far smarter than any human that has ever lived... especially the Unrepentant. This is because the Unrepentant, don't know, God's Word...which gives us wisdom. And allows, Jesus, to defeat the enemy who comes against us, daily. Really serious situation here, Reader. I hope this is being received in the love of, Jesus...because, He, had to die on the cross for a reason. And that reason is Salvation to Repentant souls. Those who want to spend eternity with, God and Jesus...and not sadly without. Again...a really serious thing here, Reader. Beginning to prayerfully read in: The Gospel of John, will allow, Jesus, to enlighten our understanding of Salvation through Repentance for our sin. We'll be very thankful for what, Jesus, has done for us, if we do.❤️❤️❤️

This only repels people from god. The only way you're going to convince someone to start a new life is by creating relationships with them and living that life - and if you're living a life that is compelling to them, that's when these words might have some meaning to them. Just talking about God and quoting Bible verses is only going to people away. Think of it this way: people talking about diet plans - no one wants to hear about your diet; in fact, you're only going to annoy them BUT if they acut SEE you losing weight, they you've got someone who is genuinely interested.
