Tina is just mind blowing to me. I practiced drums for my entire youth and started playing gigs in 11th grade. It was all about chops, technique, and playing other peoples music exactly the same as the records (or cassettes when they appeared). Along comes a rookie bass player and she puts all that training to shame with an artful and unique feel. Really an amazing person.

To be honest I always thought he was much like myself, not all that socially confident or prefering to stay out of the limelight? Either way without getting into the personal stuff between the three of them I'm glad that we can see and hear stories of what occured and understand them better. I've watched many tv interviews of David recently. Its changed my perspective of him. He's a very humorous, creative and interesting person. When Stop Making Sense hit the theaters in 1984 our gang raced to the first midnight showing. It was an event. I'm 63. Last night my wife and I streamed the movie and rode that time machine back to our much younger college years. It was a moving experience. One thing I was truly knocked out by was Tina's bass playing. Just nailed down the groove. I was reminded just how much her playing brought the Talking Heads music to life.

I'm pleased to have found this video, which is a fine tribute to a remarkable performer. One of the best gigs I ever saw in over 45 years of gig-going was the Talking Heads & Tom Tom Club double-header at London's Wembley Arena in July 1982. I and three friends drove 120 miles on spec and managed to get seats high at the side overlooking the stage. Simply fantastic. This is saying something because my main interest was - and still is - progressive rock, but I just cannot argue with music and performance of this quality whatever the genre.

I'm a big prog rock lover and play bass, but I always enjoy that simple stuff now and then. That, and I'm not that skilled to play Rush and Yes with the precision I want 😂 But being simple on bass is sometimes all you need. Sting and Tina and some others prove that point.

What strikes me is how much of her playing is about the notes she *doesn’t* play, as well as the ones she does. It’s the same with her sound; it doesn’t take up a lot of space on the frequency spectrum, but does a tremendous amount in the space it occupies. It’s all part of the minimalistic roots of the band so evident on the first two albums. And it’s a totally unique approach to bass playing that really makes her stand out. She simply does the opposite of what most bass players do.
