The best part about the water merchants option? While it extends the timer before the vault runs out of water, it drastically reduces the time before the supermutants conquer it, since, you know, you went around giving the vault's location!

I agree the Necropolis should’ve been more fleshed out, but Set is one of my favorite characters from the first game. Even though he’s a relatively minor character, he’s got such a unique way of speaking with that weird dialect that’s like a mix of greaser slang and biblical sermonizing. With their limitation of only having 20- ish talking heads they were able to make each one of them distinct in their own way.

Yes that quest with the ghoul kid in 4 pissed me off too because it was Bethesda shitting on the established lore just for a small joke. Also V.A.T.S is what Bethesda called the targeting system, in classic Fallout it has no name it's just the targeting mode and there is a manual it's in the game directory but who checks the directory for a game manual. I know its cliché but they don't make games like this anymore. The choice, the writing, the dark humor, the factions, I love the Followers too for the same reasons, and the world just grips me every time I play. You can even complete the game in 20 mins if you go straight to Mariposa.

I see this game as importance, yet difficulty of human nuance in a jaded world I also love how in the end, the oversee is so jaded and afraid to the world that he would rather live in a dark underground hole than see anything change. But we do get that sense that he’s wrong and we can change things, but he can’t see that

I am pretty sure you know this but the overseer actually hides a dark secret. The vaults are used for experiments and vault 13 is used to test people who were not exposed to the outside. The overseer hides this fact and hence want to kick out our hero(who failed experiment by going outside).

There are copies of Fallout 1 where the timer is a dud and it’s impossible to fail no matter how much in-game time has passed. Personally i loved the idea of that timer as it adds to the immersion/tension and need to explore and get stronger. Anyone who complained about the timer is a fool since there’s ample time to complete the mission

imo, there isn't a moral choice to be made at Necropolis. Unless you're doing it for roleplay reasons, there's no reason -not- to fix the pump if you're able to. I don't think it's supposed to be a choice, more a way to demonstrate to new players that actions can have unforeseen consequences. If you're not thinking about the effect taking the chip will have, you're dooming this community. I really like it, because it makes Fallout really immersive. It's like learning about mutant sterility, or hiring the water caravans. In later games, your quest tracker would update on screen, letting you know you just discovered some key information, but in OG you get no help from the DM. When you finally realise that the decision you made ~6 hours ago is having a real effect on your game, it's amazing. I think it does an amazing job of making the game feel much more complex and reactive than it is. It's kind of a flaw of the later games, especially with how dialogue options are clearly labelled. Anything with [Speech] as a pre-fix you can safely guess is a preferable outcome, which is a shame because you chase the skill checks rather than role play, but idk if there's even a perfect solution.

25:16 I do wish Bethesda kept the original game’s look of what a Ghoul was. I get that these are people who’s flesh has rotted away so not every one would look like a skull but so many still have lips and both eyes. I get that this makes it easier to rig and animate but it’s telling Harold is the most distinct Ghoul you meet in fallout 3 (I know in lore he’s more of a mutant given he was in the same facility that changed The Master)

I'm glad you brought up the old custom of game manuals. The thick and beautifully written "Vault Dweller's Survival Guide" -manual of the original box remains one of my prize possessions. It is such a fun read that perfectly sets the tone of the game before you even start it. Thankfully it's part of the Steam package, and the Internet Archive has also preserved it in digital form for those unfortunate enough to never see the real thing.

The problem with F1's time limit is that if you don't know how lenient it is, it can be a huge turn-off. I know this because it was for me, when I initially got the game and realized there's a time limit, I got stressed with the game and felt like if I spent too much time exploring side content and not enough rushing through the main quest, I'd fail and have to start over. That illusion was reinforced further because it's an "old game" and all I knew about "old games" is that they're unforgiving and unconventional. I know that's not the case for everyone, but without knowing that the time limit may as well not be there, it made me too anxious to take in the world and really enjoy the game.

Fallout was originally played in 640x480. That's why pathfinding doesn't work in high resolutions. You're not meant to see that much of the world all at once. I recommend playing it in 960x540 with the x2 scaler. These things have been fixed. You can have infinite pathfinding complexity now. It's called the "High Res Patch". Among many mods that improve the experience. You're playing it wrong! Kappa LOL
@ramblelime

Recycled i don't usually like to take mods into account when i judge a game. If I did that, i could make the argument that skyrim is a masterpiece (it's not) because mods fix all of its issues. Thanks for letting me know though. My next playthrough will definitely have those installed

Fallout 1 had one of the best manuals ever, completely in-theme teaching you about everything. So a lot of info was given there instead of tutorials. Something that was lost in translation as the game become a digital download. Also, the resolution for the games was like 3x, or 4x smaller than what you're playing at.

Regarding your point about the game not properly tutorializing the UI, I agree with you, but the developers probably thought about this as well and implemented a "Quick Help" Window when you press the F1 key, which is supposed to explain the UI to you. However, this is also very unintuitive, since players can't be expected to mash every button out of curiosity. I just thought it's something worth mentioning. Anyway, great video!

@@LasherTimora Right? It's like complaining about having to use a memory card instead of system memory on a PS1. My dudes, that was the standard at the time that was established. I was 14 when FO1 came out, and I didn't have any issues with it. I wasn't even really a majorly computer literate person. But I knew that F1 was the help menu in basically all programs. UI has evolved, but one shouldn't judge UI anachronistically.

MARVELOUS analysis. You go system by system evaluating each mechanic and examining whether they work or not, and why. Hardly any stone was left unturned or any avenue unexplored. With far too many analyses and retrospectives, you get the feeling that going through the story beat by beat is an end in itself. In this analysis, it's how it should be: a vehicle for the purpose of *discussing* the game's writing, sound design, themes, mechanics. Great job! The first Fallout is unique. It’s like the first Star Wars in 1977. A magic spark of creativity, hard work and luck. Mixed and match so many ideas from so many varied pieces of media, bits of real world history and original ideas that there’s nothing else like it before or since, it stands out even against its own sequels. Often mimicked, never recreated.

This game was a big part of my later childhood. When 3 came out as a teen and the new generation was exposed to the watered down version of this once-amazing series, I knew it would only go downhill from there (with New Vegas being the anomaly). It's a shame how far the series came from the Master rationalizing his madness to the leader of the Enclave being persuaded to blow himself in a single sentence. Anyway, you tasted the nectar of what really made it great. If you don't want your dreams crushed of what the series could have turned into, don't read the fantastic design documents for Van Buren. Great video. It always reminds me how dumbed down overall games have become.

Unloading a full clip of a fully automated weapon into someone as they are screaming in pure agony & shitting their bridges cause they cant take it anymore & doing a little corpse dance still cracks me up to this day. I still remember when I took the slavers on in fallout 2 at a low level Only 2 guys remaing & me being almost dead. And I burst out laughing when the slaver behind Metzger hit him & he too literally exploded. I hid behind the wall, let him charge at me & then I finished the last slaver all by myself. Back then fallout used to be a real challenge. You could even die in power armor in the late game. In faĺlout 3 you are virtually immortal above level 15 wearing power armor & erasing an entire flock of mutants

That's only in Fallout 2. But a high charisma does effect reaction in the first Fallout, which can unlock some additional dialogue. For example, in Shady Sands, with 10 charisma you can get additional dialogue from Tandi, she'll even mention rumors about the Deathclaw long before you get to the Hub. She will also mention Necropolis (as the "City of death").

With regards to the movement, I'm going to guess that's because the screen is bigger with how you are playing it versus how it was originally. You can see more of the map at once. It's weird seeing it played on modern computers. Also, before it got patched, the time limit was much tighter. Whilst the intro was awkward, I liked it. I expect to be exiled from the vault for this.

If you use the number keys to activate the corresponding skills, it's a lot quicker and not tedious at all. Living in post soviet eastern europe, we had no actual legit copies of games, so game manuals were not a thing, yet we managed to figure all this out :P

The best (and worst) thing we got with time is a more or less standard ui. OG Fallouts could really benefit from better UI. But at the same time it would lose some charm if it was just standard modern ui, imho. Themed buttons and text boxes just look too cool to trade them for flat labeled rectangles.

Asking as someone who recently finished Fallout 1 off an original disc: are the Steam/GOG versions this far zoomed out or did you use a mod?

You can adjust it based on your liking. I have it in 1920x1080 because that's my monitor size and that's how i like it, but it can be scaled down to original if you like

@@ramblelime Thanks! I can see the appeal of seeing more of the screen at once, but a more zoomed-in camera makes the locations feel more real to me, maybe because it makes the repeating tiles less obvious

Umm, there actually is an option to increase the distance you will path, so you don't need to make a trail of a bunch if short distance clicks to get to the other side of an area. It should be in the pre-launch menu's options screen.

33:40 very clever and my favorite part of the video. You don't even have to agree with the daily wire members beliefs to understand that they are factual. Great video and continue making videos on fallout full conversation mods. Also look for any on fallout tactics. I know fallout 3 have very little and so might fallout tactics but if it doesn't have any then continue what you are doing. You are one of my new favorite channels.

The pre-made characters are just fine. I have beaten the game with all three of them pretty easily, albeit at that point I already knew what I was doing and what had to be done. P.S. at 14:07, that's not Set. Set is up top at the Town Hall which are the ruins of an old church.

Protip: For your thumbnail, the way you've parsed the words out, it could be read as "the thematic power of consistency" or "the power of thematic consistency". In the future, it'd be best to set it up so that it could only be read one way.

No joke, I had the exact same experience with the old Fallout games. Played all of them, got 1 and 2 during a steam sale, gave up. Except I never make Charisma builds. I returned a year later and really enjoyed the second game

You don't need to click and drag down to skills to use skills on items.. If you don't know the keyboard shortcuts then you can just use the skilldex button in the bottom right corner

All 3 locations you listed as filler locations are all pretty prevelent in my memory but maybe I've played these games to much... Quincy is taken over by the Gunner woth a cowboy hat. Evergreen Mills is a giant raider camp with the behemoth in a cage. Searchlight is pretty much ghoul central in NV and has the green tint when you are in that area.

I hate that it's so hard for me to get into games beyond a certain era due to how archaic they are. I grew up in the early 2000s, so anything from the PS1 & Nintendo 64 era is about where my limit is. Anything beyond that is too alien to me. After tracing my first video game back to possibly the SEGA Genesis, I've been making more of an effort to rectify that.

I sucked so bad at the combat in these classic fallouts that it prevented me from fully experiencing their fantastic stories. I hope they get a remake with a detailed explanation of mechanics, stats & combat. I think Pillars of Eternity & Divinity Original Sin have set a good standard for how this can be achieved.
