In the Fallout Universe ghouls are effectively immortal. Once they get past their initial radiation rot they can live for hundreds of years if not longer. Their biggest concern is going feral, that is losing their faculties and becoming wild irradiated beasts that attack anything in their vicinity.

0:40 - It may look like the '50s or '60s, but this scene takes place on Saturday, October 23, 2077. In the _Fallout_ universe, the aesthetic that we IRL would refer to as a blend of "1950s Retro-Futurism" and "Atompunk" remained popular for over a century.

@@_3clipse_ I have an argument with that, though. If they didn't have semi-conductors, there would be no diodes or transistors. Vacuum tube tech cannot make miniaturized equipment like we see in all the gear. There would have to be some transistors to take the place of tubes in the smaller equipment. There was a point in our history where the semi-conductors existed alongside tubes but microchips did not. I would have to take apart some of the gear 😉 to verify that. Yes, I realize that arguing this is like arguing how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. LOL

There are a lot of very direct references to the game. The inhaler the raider uses before attacking was a drug called jet. And the injection lucy uses on herself is a stimpak. Both scenes used the exact sounds from the game for both consumables. They really used a lot from the game series to inhance this show for the game lovers. I love that they made the raiders formidable but also reckless. In game they seem like a joke so its cool to see them actually be scary.

The reason this is being hailed as a great adaption is the faithful fan service of the production design. They went to great lengths to get every detail of the lore and the setting right. Fans eat that up. The second reason is they’ve written a great story independent of any game narrative. The characters are wholly new ones. They’re not trying to be someone that Fallout players might already be invested in. For the non-fan, the adherence to detail creates a coherence that keeps us immersed. We might not understand all the lore, but a trust gets built that everything had a reasonable explanation (even when we know something is physically implausible like stimpacks).

I grew up in Pittsburgh and was an 80's kid when I was young, I asked my old man was the reason we kept the pantry so full because of Nuclear War. He said no the mills were closing and if he lost his job, he wanted us to have enough shelf stable food to last a few months if needed. He then told me I need never worry about Nuclear War because Pittsburgh was a 1st strike target due to the mills and if Nuclear War happened, I'd have enough time to put my head between my legs and kiss my butt goodbye. He also told me that was a blessing because no one would want to live in the world after a Nuclear War. Yeah, kids who grew up in the Cold War got taught heavy lessons earlier. In *Fallout* the radiation is so bad because they used HUGE amounts of small nukes and "ground burst" most of them, specifically to cause the most damage and fallout, as lots of small explosions is more efficient (like a cluster bomb) and ground bursts make the most fallout so the enemy couldn't recover afterwards. Also many of the vehicles and factories etc were powered by their own mini-nuclear reactors as it's an alternate history where tech and history went a bit different after WW2, so, the bombs blew all those reactors up adding to the fallout

The Enclave is a faction that began as a secret cabal of pre-war US politicians, generals, spooks, and CEOs. In the centuries between the war and the time of the games (and this series) they hid in vault-like structures of their own, mostly built in and under off shore oil rigs. Their overall goal was to return to power and rebuild the pre-war USA in their own image. As they had ties to Vault-Tec they started using the population of some west coast vaults in experiments and other tom-fuckery. The faction was the primary antagonist of Fallout 2 and remnants show up in later games in both official content and mods. They are the only faction that is technologically superior to the Brotherhood of Steel on the west coast (it's a different story on the east coast with multiple factions that are higher tech than even The Enclave).

What seems to be getting set up as the unique aspect of these vaults is something never seen in the games: Three vaults (31, 32, and 33) that are interlinked but seem to only open their linking doors rarely. One thing I hope the series gives us is some information about what Vault-Tec (the company that built all the vaults and designed the experiments in them) was trying to do with this Vault Triad.

Fun fact: the "thumbs up covering the mushroom cloud" thing was a huge speculation/misconception within the fallout community. Idk who started it, but someone posted something online about the "truth" behind the vault boy thumbs-up wink pose, claiming that if you reach your arm and your thumb covers the mushroom cloud, you are at a safe distance of a nuclear blast, and if not, you aren't. This fake claim began to spread around the fallout community for years, and I guess Bethesda took notice and made it canon within the show

By the end of this episode I realized that I was going to enjoy the series. The three main characters Lucy, Maximus and The Ghoul were totally likeable and made me want to know more about them and follow their journey through the world of Fallout. Lucy got me with big beautiful eyes, Maximus the underdog that just wants a big break and The Ghoul is just weirdly interesting as well as funny. I can't wait to see where they go with the story. I've never played the Fallout game so I know nothing about what is going to happen and I think I like that. It was really cool to see Kyle MacLachlan in the show. It reminded me of the first time I ever saw him in the movie "The Hidden (1987)" with Chris Sarandon. I've remembered both of those actors ever since. He's aged really well and still looks cool just more dad cool now. It'd be cool to see them on screen together again especially in this show. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌out.

Vault dweller searching for her father is from Fallout 3, or was it 4? Whichever takes place in DC. Enclave is the enemy of the Brotherhood, Ghouls can live forever as long as there is radiation to keep them alive. Love the little details from the games like the various structures like in ep 2 is where in Fallout 4 you sort of begin your game. Very detailed in intertwining the 5 games into the show. Odd that the west coast vaults connect where as on the east coast they are not connected to each other and are more separated like the vaults from the show Silo.

The writing is top notch. The give you clues and information without burdening you with an info drop. Everything, including the scenery, props, and dialogue, are moving the story forward economically. There’s just enough exposition to tell us what we need to know. But not everything we want to know. And that’s the major hook. We’re left with questions and we seek answers. We pay attention to details and savor the flavor. Good writing. Edit: we do get the Ghoul’s motivation: for the love of the game.

The Enclave were the villains of Fallout 2 and Fallout 3. The Enclave were part of a shadow organization within the US Government, who were also working with Vault Tec and WestTek (Pharma Company). They survived in underground bases and offshore oil rigs until the events of Fallout 2 and 3, where they were destroyed on each coast. There MAY be some forces on the mainland somewhere still. Main villains of Fallout 1 was the wasteland itself, and later the Super Mutants and their leader, The Master.

I haven't played the Fallout games much, but I could instantly tell there's something wrong with the guys from the other vault, but you couldn't tell if they were raiders from the top or really just had a very hard time inside their vault and needed some help to get back on their feet. Very good cinematography imo, of course I missed everything they did "wrong" since I don't know the game lore that well.

My favorite weapon so far in this series is the "Rock-it-launcher". I don't think they ever call it that though. I know it is in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, not sure about the other IP's. You have to build it during the game using parts you find, and it fires out any junk that you cram into it. Baby doll arms, forks, cue balls, etc- all of them are turned into deadly projectiles.

In Fallout Shelter it's called a Junk Jet (13-15 hp damage). There is also the Recoil Compensated Junk Jet (14-17), the Tactical Junk Jet (15-19), Electrified Junk Jet (16-21), the Flaming Junk Jet (17-23), and the Technician's Revenge (18-25). It's crazy to send dwellers on quests with that and watch it shoot out teddy bears, alarm clocks, electric fans, whatever...you never know what piece of junk it will show it firing.

This show really knocked it out of the park. Great entertainment. While they screwed with the older lore quite a bit, I felt the changes were still very much in the 'spirit' of the IP. It shows what happens when you bring on the creatives who are responsible for the success of the franchise. Purell and a few others even played the games as part of their research and it really shows in the final product. One of her best quotes on playing the games was that when she finally put on the vault suit and the pip boy, she felt how monumental the moment was because she had that background from the games. Have to appreciate the professionals who come into a project and really get into the backstory of why an IP is popular. Looking forward to what the next season is gonna set up and develop for us. Additionally, the first scene with the bombs dropping is wild. Got me emotional as all hell.

Almost all fallout games start out with you in a vault and due to different circumstances you find yourself out in the real world. The games are open world where your choices can affect future outcomes. You are constantly put into circumstances of do you do the “right” thing or do you devolve into a monster like the raiders in the wasteland or do you become a mixture of both. I’ve played good characters, evil, a realistic mix of in between all with different interactions with characters as well as different endings to the games.

I like that they show Lucy being competently skilled with firearms and martial arts, but she still has to struggle tooth and nail to survive. Maximus who was desensitized by the Brotherhood towards killing and death, still struggles because he lacks the proper skills to fight (Their naivety also is a factor) The Ghoul has both, plus a jaded moral compass, thus he's riding through apocalypse with a smile
