I think Cooper’s gunslinger persona is just that, a persona. As an actor before the bombs, he played a classic gunslinger all the time, and the one specific instance we see him act, he mentions he’s portraying darker and more grizzled characters over time. After 220 years of unrelenting horror, I think he’s retreated into the persona of someone who can survive in the wasteland, namely, a gunslinger.
@indianaharris9286
@indianaharris9286 Ай бұрын
Very true. I think Coopers been playing a role for SO long that he’s lost himself in just surviving. If/when he finds his family in S2 + spending time with Lucy I think will steadily let the real man show from beneath. I suspect when he finally drops that gunslinger persona he’s going to just fall apart as a person.

One of the more subtle, darkest moments in the show was Lucy stumbling upon the dinner table with the dead family. There's a toddler skeleton in the high-chair, and a bottle of poison on the table... That hit pretty hard, honestly. There were a couple of instances in the show where I exclaimed "WTF" out loud and some where I "nervous" chuckled while thinking, "holy shit, holy shit, holy shit." I feel the show should get a bit of a bump for all the subtleties included in every episode.

That moment felt like so many contextual storytelling moments in the games. When the player figures out what happens to the previous residents just by looking at the clues.

As someone who has played the games( even started playing the first one) I think this show best exemplifies the Bethesda fallout approach-an immerisive post apocalyptic world with memorable characters but simple stories. While older games and new Vegas though were MUCH more post post apocalypse, I feel this show is still a great introduction to the themes and vibe of fallout for those who haven’t played it, which in my opinion is what a game adaptation SHOULD be. lore is not important, the themes are, and I think the show does a decent job with that.

@judoshrew
@judoshrew Ай бұрын
I feel like its such an inversion of the old themes though. Bethesda fallout is very conservative, it wants to go back to a civilized past and wants you to look upon old heroes, times gone by, rebuilding america. Classic black isle fallout is highly critical of the past, America's unholy marriage of military elite, politicians and economic aristocracy sacrificing humanity and the common people on a platter to the death by fev mutated viruses and nuclear holocaust, the satire is biting and presents vessels of the old world as ghosts that haunt the apocalyptic world from moving forward, especially with fallout 2 and new vegas DLCs like dead money, old world blues, and lonesome road. All methods of dealing with the Master can be seen as approaches toward how to deal with fascism, who tells you that in the face of hardship and a cruel world that we must submit to a master, embrace a master race of bigger stronger radiation resistant ubermensch, who all are connected by unity of race and share the same brain, who are beyond nationality or religion, all signifiers of fascism, and your responses are to fight them and destroy them, prove to them with extensive evidence and reason (easily the hardest way) that the future they promise you and every other human isn't real, they are sterile, or to knock them down through sabotage in the shadows. To me, bethesda has never understood the themes of old fallout, and supplanted them with their own.
@sirazazeloflowkey6424
@sirazazeloflowkey6424 Ай бұрын
@@judoshrewTo be fair, by now 135 years have passed in the universe since part 1. That is like 1889 by comparison to 2024 for us. And an IP should be able to explore multiple themes. The lore however is intact. Especially considering the unreliable narrator approach where most info we get is from someone in the setting. And those people can be mislead, wrong, or lying. Only what is shown is unmistakably intended as true, so to say.

Many criticisms of the series "unrealism" don't seem to recognize that it is not intended to be a credible postapocalypse but a critique of the tensions between the Kennedy/Johnson era's tech optimism and it's omnipresent nuclear worries.

Having only watched the first episode, the general premise seems inspired by Fallout 3 at least for Lucy's story. I was supremely relieved at how enjoyable this show was! I was terrified that it would fall flat like Halo, which even as a die hard fan I couldn’t stomach with all the liberties they took. Interesting, I loved it, thought it was quite exceptional Also, for me personally the humor wasn’t executed better than the games, just more frequently and less subtle.. the humor in the games is much more subtle, the esthetic in the games is more dreary and bleak, you are obviously meant to spend more time engaging in the world when playing the games so the vibes are able to encompass you slowly, deliberately, the story itself is fleshed out mainly in that way, it’s more telling the experiencer “we have a lot here for you to explore, feel free to take your time doing so and you will be rewarded” and the humor reflects that, in the show its more like “we only have so much time to properly present the spirit of the humor in this world so we are going to crank it up a few notches to get the main point of the vibe across”

Amazon proving once again that they can nail sci fi, but screw up fantasy shows. I had faith in this tv show purely because it was sci fi based. The show has absolutely nailed the fallout feel. Every scene has an Easter egg, or nod to the game. Like the pipboys, or computer monitors, a stimpack bringing you back from the brink of death, or even just a random pot of glue left on an overseer's table for no reason other than for someone to loot it in 50 years. It jumps deep into the Fallout vibe pool and has a good ol' swim in it. Love the show. Well done to everyone involved!

I'm in a similar 7-8 range for this show, just had such a great time and it's one of the quicker binges I've had in a while. Also I'm surprised that Jonathan Nolan doesn't have an official writing credit as it has a lot of the hallmarks I associate with his writing (as far as the twists and the delivery of those twists). I hope the creative team manage to expand on the show's quality as much as it deserves with future seasons though. Because plenty of my favourite shows started with a highly entertaining but not exceptional first season before developing into something more (Jonathan Nolan's first show, Person of Interest being one of these), and I think this really has the potential to become one of my favourites with the now established cast of characters and arcs that are already in place from this season.

I hear people on some of the convenient encounters, but it didn’t bother me personally. They’re all traveling by foot from similar-ish starting points and pursuing the same thing. And the wasteland’s hubs of life are few and far between - from Filly to the Observatory, etc. Lucy had a tracker in the head that she was following since the start of episode 3. Coopers a bounty hunter and the dog helped track a lot. Some conveniences happened, mainly in the first half of the show - but I felt there was just enough justification that it didn’t bother me. Plus Id rather see interactions than characters just aimlessly wandering through a desert for sake of realism.

I was so happy they gave us great characters. As a huge fan of the games, I wasn't one of those up in arms when we saw the main character was a woman. I tend to make my Fallout character a woman as well, so was perfectly fine with that. I just didn't want them to give us a "Mary Sue" superwoman, like so many other trash productions these days. I was so happy that, not only did they avoid that pitfall, but they gave us a character that was played so charmingly and had actual character growth throughout the show. Ella Purnell did a fantastic job in this roll and I hope Hollywood finally realizes how to go back to making good and intriguing female leads. As for the Ghoul: Walton Goggins should be in all the shows and movies. ALL the shows and movies.

The thing about Lucy is that she’s a completely original character meant to fill the role a custom player character in a Fallout game. The writers clearly just did whatever they wanted with her. If Lucy were instead the Lara Croft/Samus Aran figure of the Fallout universe, I think there is a non-zero chance they would have messed her up, even if 2000s era Fallout games were characterizing her exactly like the modern day show is now. We’d be recovering from a decade long debate about was it okay for Lucy’s vault to get attacked because she wanted to get married, the whoever wrote the show might not be able to touch that plot

I might be wrong but I think (think) the show mostly takes place in and around what used to be LA, rather than the entire state of California, so I was a bit more forgiving of the travel time conveniences through the show

I liked the production value, the acting, the thematic elements, but I felt that the balance between exposition and plot was way too heavy on the exposition, balanced on a very thin plot. There is probably a really good 2.5 hour movie in there somewhere.

I really liked the Fallout show. While I thought some of the dialogue was awkward, probably purposefully, I loved that they brought the mysteries of the games into it. I love Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4. I have not played the games before that, but I watched this with someone who played them all and knew the lore. My favorite piece at the start... they showed off that wonderful weapon. JUNK JET! Is that a spoiler?

What some people forget is that in-universe 135 years passed since Fallout 1 to the begining of this show. For comparison that would be like Fallout 1 is 1889 and the show would be 2004.

I think the show is good 8/10 They kind of half explain the lore of everything. The 31,32,33 experiment was amazing for me, it made alot of sense. I think you are right, the story was too simple and everything fit too conviently. I didnt like how sets were reused, and too small, but i understand why they did it. The main character was really likeable, i did like how alot of people tried to kill her, but realisticly everyone woud have tried to kill her and make her a sex slave. You can really tell alot about a show if it is rewatchable, and I think I would probably rewatch it, which is a good thing. Can I just mention I kind of wish molediver went into how she got in the vault using the moms pipboy, it would have filled in alot more of the story, a visual flashback would have been cool, or a videotape idk.

Was expecting nothing, was absolutely impressed by it ! Felt it longer when it was getting into the Coop "back then" story, but was still enjoyable. I agree with you : they set the table for season 2 that will go off the rail, IMO. Can't wait. Solid 8/10.

I loved the first seven episodes, but was underwhelmed by the big reveals in episode 8. It was great while they were chasing a generic McGuffin, but the second they explained the McGuffin, I couldn't stop thinking about how little sense it made. It didn't ruin what came before, but it did jolt me out of the world for the entire episode, and I spent most my brainpower trying (and failing) to make sense of the plot rather than how great the performances were. Which is a shame, because the performances really were outstanding from top to bottom.
