Just popping in to say that the Shadow ini Tweaks guide helped out my frames immensely. Out of the 5 options they tell you to change I already had 3 of them, but changing the last 2 bumped up my frames in Boston from 30-37 to 60-55. Would HIGHLY recommend anyone to take a look at it. (Also, make sure to set your ini file to Read-Only after tweaking it)

To anyone reading, I cannot stress enough how changing my shadow distance from ultra to 8000 in the ini has changed the performance of the game. I had a near build limit sanctuary that was chugging at 40 fps and now its a solid 60. Wow.

This literally helped me to not drop fallout 4, I was enjoing it but the fps went down on diamond city and boston, even with a pc that overpasses the recommended specs by a mile, but with these mods, my fps went to rock solid 60 fps, totally recommended.

The worst areas I've found are the immediate area around/ in Faneuil Hall, the Vault 114 entrance where you meet Nick Valentine after you finish the quest and anywhere in general where super mutants are. Annoying as heck. I even downloaded a few mods to disable God rays and even textures, it's helped a bit, but still have lag in the Faneuil Hall area

My problem its not the FPS itself... but the CTD I get when I go anywhere near Goodneighbor. Like, that part of Boston crashes my game straight into the desktop. There is no slowing down of FPS or anything like that before the crash. Just the sudden crash. As of 2023, I've been told that Boston FPS fix tends to screw with the textures and does not play well with the unofficial patch mod.

This guide really helps a lot^^ I'm able to play this game at 70+ frames thanks to this. Though I must ask, can mods cause the performance to dip? Because before these mods, I had whispering hills, guns for hire, and the Mark V(b) armory mods installed but then afterwards installed a couple more weapon mods. And things are relatively well still but I do notice a small difference. Then again I must be remembering things wrong.

Generally more mods means more stress on your system, so unless the mod explicitly mentions that it serves to improve performance, most mods will either cause almost nil to noticeable performance dip.

I took it a step further and just disabled shadows altogether, this seems to help a lot if you're cucked by CPU like I am. I get around 25-40 fps in the most demanding parts of Boston now, which is an improvement compared to what I was dealing with before.

Even with Boston FPS Fix, your frames will still suffer in downtown Boston. There are other more updated attempts at this fix that have various issues (but at least are being actively developed) leaving Boston FPS Fix as the best refined (and smallest size) so far. The solution to bad frames in downtown is simple -- learn to ignore it. Combat will never be particularly intense unless you have wildly increased spawn rates anyway, so dropping into the low 30s shouldn't be a dealbreaker if you can maintain a smooth sixty most anywhere else. But this fix is still better than vanilla in other areas, so pick it up regardless of your performance in downtown.

I'm downloading the archived 'Fo4FI_FPS_fix' now which does the same thing but for the entire Commonwealth. I'll have to test and report back, but I knew within the first 2 minutes of a new game that I need to do something about it because it feels like sub 30fps.

just to tell you guys that shadow boost received a up to date fix. Check it out in Nexus, because it really improve the fps feast the engine promotes with poorly optimized shadows. Kinda clunky to set up. But when you do, expect 20+ fps in dense areas like cities.

No. You need to get mods. There's two, one that you manually download and put it into your folders and whatnot, the second (the most popular) requires F4SE (which you should get if you want to mod in the first place, there's MULTIPLE tutorials online to get it active, it's relatively simple).

removing all this essential mods actually give me back like 3 FPS... idk why cant explain I have a decent rig also FPS was never a issue for me but I installed boston fps fix and FAR without testing at first glance, than later decided to test if they actually do something, idk which one of this mods was the issue but removing all made no changes and gived me back like 3 fps... the ini tweaks are only ones who actually boosts fps

Boston FPS FIX should be replaced by Fo4FI_FPS_fix by ZPascalionZ. Boston fps fix, fixes only boston area, Fo4FI_FPS_fix, fixes the whole commonwealth.

BloodHound Not really. But instead of Vivid, I play with Optimized Textures - Commonwealth and Fallout 4 Optimized (the mod) where I then download a mod that reenables the god rays. Search for a mod named “Mod Menu screen uncapped” or something of that nature, it makes it so whenever you search for mods you get more options

This is from two years and I have yet to try this myself but some people at the Steam discussion says installing this mod helped with their FPS as well strangely enough. You want to fix FPS? Don't use mods that break pre-combines. When you break them the cell call count goes sky-high and that's what causes your FPS to tank. What mods break pre-combines? Mods that alter existing structures, textures, or clean up clutter. Many mods that add flora or trees do. These are just a few, I got rid of them and I have a great FPS in downtown Boston. If you want to use mods like these, then find out if the author has rebuilt the pre-combines. If not you're going to take a hit, the bigger the mod or the more you have in that cell, the bigger your FPS drop will be. It's that simple.

@@Aden_III If you use mods that break pre-combines in a cell it usually only affects that cell, many of these are foliage type mods, and clean up mods. But there are some exceptions. Anywhere that is render intensive can be affected in a particular cell. With that said there are mods out there that will affect a cell even if it has nothing to render in that cell, some of these are replacement texture mods, though rare it can happen. An example of one such mod is the mod that removes most power armor from the game. An example of a great mob that can tank a local cells FPS is Ellie's store mod. I love this mod but it can tank your FPS in that cell, and it made me make a decision do I live with the FPS hit or do I delete the mod in my case I deleted the mod because I didn't like the FPS hit it gave my system. it also gets far worse if you have multiple mods affecting the same area at the same time. For me a decision was easy, I would rather have a higher frame rate than a certain looking Fallout, for you that decision maybe different. But that's the beauty of this game you have the ability to make it look like you want it to look, all you need to decide is can you take the stutters and the FPS hit.
