Fallout 4: How to Stop Repetitive Minutemen Quests

Take a break from those repetitive Minutemen settlement quests. This is a simple method that I use to avoid being given settlement quests that involve ghouls, raiders, and kidnapped settlers. Settlement defence quests will still occur.

- The speakers at the Castle will automatically turn back on during Defend the Castle.

Minutemen? More like MinuteMAN. Literally only the General helps out settlements, Preston just chilling at The Castle or wherever doing nothing. Seems the highest rank work the most, strange... IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE, BETHESDA! It should have been completed automaticlly after a couple days from other Minutemen people, but nope. Only the General is allowed to help people. Smh.

I'm probably late to the party but another beneficial way to stop raids is to properly arm your settlers and properly have defenses set up and then they win on their own

Also a good way to stop the random Preston Garvey settlement tasks is to allow him to follow you as a companion, finish any settlement task you have currently. Once you are done with the task talk to the settlememt in which you help as you normally would. This time instead of reporting your success to Preston, since you have him as a companion, talk to him through the command system, and the quest will complete itself, and he doesn't task you with any more. After you are done cleaning up all the pesky settlement tasks, finally talk to Preston and dismiss him to a settlement far far away...lol. 👌

Generally, they subside if you aggressively pursue quests, both through Preston and Radio Freedom. Eventually, Preston will say "I'll let you know when a settlement needs help. In the meantime.....drink your Ovaltine." Okay, not that last bit, but you get the idea.

You can also try running away from him after turning in a quest. If you time it right you'll get the XP and complete the quest, but Preston won't get the opportunity to give you another one. The downside to this is that he can ambush you later when you can't immediately escape and give a quest out of the blue, which you can't avoid (he did it to me when I was fixing my power armour, forcing me to reload an earlier save).

Cheers mate. I wish I had thought of this the first time playing the game. The game was stuck in an infinite loop spitting out quests to saveTenpines Bluff, Abernathy Farm & Outpost Zimonja over and over again. They always got raided by someone or other from way down South of the Commonwealth. Like WTF? there are a hundred other places in between they could have raided and it amazes me how they always knew where the raiders are from. Although I was on level 64, after several days of bouncing between these three settlements I decided enough was enough and started a new game. I'm now 25 levels in and not been summoned to either. I don't know why or how but it fixed itself with a new profile. I do avoid Preston Garvey as much as possible. That must be it. lol :)

I know I’m late with this tip but I have one more suggestion for the random settlement defense quests. Every time you get the notification that a settlement is under attack you don’t have to fast travel there right away. The settlement can defend itself if your defense is high enough. It’s a bit of a roll of the dice. The higher your defense the higher the chance that the defense will be successful. First of all make sure all of your settlement defenses are at 150 and up. Second once you get the notification just save your game and then wait or sleep in one spot for at least two days. The game will tell you if the settlement failed or completed the defense. If you fail obviously you reload previous save. Hope this helps! 😎👍🏼

Another solution is to let the quests sit in your menu. IIRC, you only get two, maybe three settlement quests at a time. If you don't complete them, you don't get more.

This used to end after about a few missions, but now it has no end when I purchased the new add-ons. I cannot do them if this clown is constantly sending me on cleanup work while he's banging on the side of the house in Sanctuary all day.... They should give you an option, because this is ridiculous.... I've done about 20 missions of this crap back to back. I hope this works, I'm level 100 saving the add-ons until all is made and then go back to the main story. That way I would be really strong to face anything in the add-ons....

Doing my 4th playthrough and kinda forgot how annoying this but I found a solution. When you finish a quest for Preston and it tells you to talk to him make a quicksave before talking to him and when you do talk to him as soon as he mentions something about another settlement spam RT on xbox or R2 on PlayStation it should bring up the conversation wheel and he won't be able to finish his sentence I do recommend however saving before you talk to him after this just in case he gives you another quest same goes for the castle, you should turn off the radio stransmitter because you get quest randomly otherwise. Anyway this worked for me not sure if it will work for others but try it.

Should be a plot twist after the last key faction is defeated: Preston gathers up all the settlements dresses them as the confederate army with real cannons lined up in columns like the civil war. He confesses that the minutemen don’t really have a general rank and that was just so you could be his puppet while he was plotting how to betray you for letting him get bored in the sanctuary. Your only backup is whatever faction was left over. Needless to say this will be a tough fight….

In general, Preston is the reason I get annoyed of playing, this tip is gold for me. I will send him to a solo settlement. A general that works like grunt.. Bethesda really missed out on a command structure here.

If you never complete Retaking the Fort, he'll never ask for help again or just do the Nuka World quests and take over every settlement and that will eliminate the quests as well

Is even easier in all my playthroughs : once you made the first quest Preston gives you at Santuary (First Steps, you can even go to, usually, Tenpeny Bluff, and shoot the quest giver in the head...), return to Preston, tell him either the quest is done, or you had problems and the settlement won´t join, he gives you the flare gun and, once he starts babling about how he is the last of the minutemen, get out of the dialogue and run away. The First steps quest will show finished, and he did not have time to give you the second one. Every time you go to Sanctuary he will start telling you how he became the last of the minutemen, so run away from him each time. Of course this method will invalidate the minutemen for all the game (you can´t make the Railroad quest if you are expelled from the Institute, they ask you to meet the minutemen...) but I think is a good price to pay for not having to look the motherfucker at the face anymore.

Here's a way to stop the Minutemen quests in 3 easy steps: Step 1: Get a quest from Preston Step 2: Walk away Step 3: Don't do the fucking quest.

However, you should still be able to set up radio beacons, recruit settlers, and maintain settlements as usual. +Hollywood Undead If you do still want the occasional settlement quest, such as the ones that provide the locations of new settlements, I recommend that you send Preston to a location other than The Castle, and simply turn on the speakers at The Castle to receive them. If you want to stop receiving them, you can simply turn off the speakers whenever you want.

I haven't been able to find an answer to this question anywhere: at what point does Preston Garvey become moveable (to the Castle or anywhere else). When he first gets to sanctuary, he counts as a settler but isn't commandable at all. At some point, he gets that attribute. My gut tells me that it's after you take the Castle, but it sure would be nice to move him before then. That's possible via console commands (for PC), but I'm reluctant to use ccommands on Preston since he's so embedded in the game's scripting. On a side note, settlement defence quests have a huge element of shear randomness. All my settlements have massive defences, enough food & water (even though I have supply lines), and I get those eventually incredibly annoying defence quests all the time. (Currently have 3 active.) And yes, I try to visit my settlements to take out the extra food/ water from the workbenches as apparently that also increases the attack chance. Finally, for any PC user, I highly recommend the mod "BS Settler Defence" on Nexus - you automatically succeed in defending a settlement when you're not there as long as defence > food+water+settlers. Because, yes, in the base game no matter what your defence and resources are, you still have a chance of failing a settlement defence that you're not personally there for. After a few thousand hours into this game, I can't even express how much I've come to hate all the MM quests that are forced on the player. Next playthrough, I'm going to avoid Concord altogether.

I just played this again and turning off the speaker didn't work. Holding the quest and not giving it to Preston still works as long as you never speak to him again.

I have a quest the requires me to kill Gouls in a location that has been already cleared out. The quest will not give me any objective markers and will not auto fail even after multiple days of me waiting. What do I do to fix this?

Hey, Derrick! It seems that whenever I try to run away from Preston when he hands out a new quest, but whenever I run away, his dialogue speeds/skips and I still end up getting the quest. I tried to wait it out and let "auto-complete" do it's job - when you complete the quest and don't report in to Preston Garvey. I've waited about 2 in-game weeks and it didn't auto-complete. All I want is for this one quest to get out of my quest log. I'm very sorry if this sounds ridiculous... I appreciate any answers!

Hello! It's been a very long time since I last played Fallout 4. From what I've experienced in the past, the "auto-complete" method generally works. However, I did notice that it can take longer with certain quests. I'll need to take some time to revisit the game and have a look. I would imagine that any number of patches could've also altered how certain quests are received and completed. In the meantime, what quest is currently stuck in your quest log? Alternatively, there should be mods available that help deal with Preston and his settlement quests. Again, it's been a while since I last played, so I don't currently have a recommendation for a mod that I know is reliable and works without issue.

So far, I've been stuck on the Ghouls/Kidnapping/Raiders (Especially Oberland Station)/Graygarden and recently, I've cleared out Super Mutants for Warwick Homestead and I tried to sleep for all of them and auto-complete never happens! I'm on Xbox One and I can't seem to find an Xbox One mod that halts Preston Garvey's radiant quests. Anyways, I appreciate your answer, Derrick!

What I do is stand around the castle with the speaker on I get like 4 or 5 settlement quest get them all done then go back to preston tell him all about it and after I a few short minutes he’s all like “there doesn’t seem to be anything at moment I’ll let you know if I get word of something” and then I never go back

I'm at the point where I am relying on those quests to give me an XP boost (level 78, trying to level up and get perks for upcoming DLC) I put them off till the end for this character and I am hoping the just keep generating on a loop over and over. I know there are plenty of ways to grind XP, but find the settlement quests a good way to keep getting everything all around like junk, chems, weapons, XP...So, do these quests just keep rolling along until the end of time? lol

After 3-4 Preston quests i gain a level. it only takes 15 minutes. im at 42 and only 15 hours into the game (after restarting without mods to gain achievements). At least 25 are from Preston quests. I would suggest doing them at the start of the game for this simple fact because when you start the main quest, it can get quite hard. and you also run into doors, safes and boxes with locks you cant open, not to mention computers with security passwords, if you havent had enough leveling in that category. i leveled the top row in the perk chart to 8 each before anything. I'm so good now I can go without power armor.

I found a easy way, i play with all dlc and creation club content. Vault 88 got attacked and i looked through the CC camera system to make it activate ( im on survival its easier than running across the map ). Then i never talked to the settlers there and never got any quests again. I still have preston around and radio freedoms still on just no requests.

Here's a easy 3 step way to never get settlement quests from Preston guaranteed Step 1 start new game Step 2 enter concord and see the raiders fighting Preston after Cogsworth gives you the quest Step 3 leave concord then talk to Cogsworth again
